“une pour le jour, une pour le soir” — Phoebus, Déchiré
in honor of finally seeing NDDP live, here is EVERY TIME SOMEONE IN THE SHOW SAYS “ESMÉRALDA”*, inspired by @aswordandapen’s comment that if I hadn’t explained the plot of the show, that would be the only character’s name a non-French speaker would have picked up (she’s not wrong…)
on the live 2017 cast album**:
“Esméralda” is said 42 43*** times (counting group appearances 1x)
of which 22 23 times are from Quasimodo
of which 11 times are in Danse Mon Esméralda alone
this is almost 2 minutes of people saying “Esméralda”
Frollo says her name 8 times
Clopin says her name 7 times (“Esméralda tu sais” in parallel with his verse in “L’attaque de Notre-Dame”)
Phoebus says it 5 times
Gringoire & Esméralda herself say it 2x
Fleur-de-lys says it 1x
please do not check my math
* I know the classical form of the meme is “every time someone says X and it gets faster”, but if I did that I would not be able to stay serious when I see the show again today with @ruemondetour (so excited!!!)
** this would probably have been funnier with the OFC especially considering Luck Mervil’s Clopin death scene but this is [most of] the cast I saw! personally!! with my own two eyes!!
*** edited 9/24 to add in the 1 missing “Esméralda” from Belle
An interview done in January 2017. Lots of good stuff here. He says the NDP concerts with the original cast let him focus more on the vocals and that he demanded for a new costume for Frollo to match his grandeur, his being the Archdeacon of the church. He says his granddaughter loves the musical and knows all the songs. His grandson was a little disappointed to learn that his grandfather was the villain but he’s made peace with it because he believes that everyone comes back to life in the end. He mentions the upcoming album in collaboration with Laurent Guardo. They made ‘La Licorne Captive’ together, and this time they’re working on ‘La Riviere de Cassis,’ which will be songs from Arthur Rimbaud’s poems. He says ‘Mes longs voyages’ is like an album to end the cycle of this type of album, songs that he himself wrote and selected, and that he will be working on crazy things after this. I don’t believe that he’ll stop making those kinds of albums, he’s been saying for a while now that every album is his last so…
Blast from the past!
I finally tracked the NDP audio I’ve had since December, whoo! Casually, the day I went to see the show, it was Hiba’s birthday. Richard asked everyone to sing happy birthday to her, and then she sang Le temps des cathédrales with him and the audience. It was lovely!
