the Broadway Chess revival was so much Like That that halfway through the last time I saw the show, I remembered that the NYPL has an archival recording of the 1988 original Broadway production, and after the show I went home and arranged to see that tape instead of seeing the revival any more. and I'm 1000000000% sure I had a better experience

#suddenly many things about the American productions make more sense #not least 'is he still in bed or in the shower'#the OBC has much better characterization than the revival. looking at you Danny Strong #chess the musical #chess musical #yes I'm going to put this in the tags #fascinatingly the NYPL's Sydney recording (still on a VHS tape!!) was clearly the same performance as the circulating bootleg #but has at least ONE MORE CAMERA ANGLE ???????#I ran out of time to watch Sydney all the way through tho bc I was rewinding the Bway tape so much #No Contest there is so inexplicably giving Walter as 'aerobics coach with headband'

saw Oedipus and now I'm sitting here like.... well... I don't know what else I was expecting, I know how the myth ends...

going to see the Chess matinée today on a last minute secondhand ticket. vaguely I wonder if Sean MacLaughlin will be on?

I can't believe I am low-key hoping that the Broadway musicians go on strike to put this Chess revival out of its misery

#I was so annoyed by the production that I have not had the energy to do a post about it #I do unironically like the changes/expansions to Svetlana (except taking SES away)#but otherwise. everyone else comes off poorly in this version. except for Walter who very reasonably is trying to do what it takes #to avoid nuclear war. which is a reasonable goal .....#“fuck me more chess??” he says in Act II and you know what. valid.#deleting this later

I was suddenly reminded that not only did the 2010 Spanish production of Les Misérables make the prostitutes in Look Down sing about syphilis and gonorrhea, the translation also RHYMED "syphilis" with "Paris"

#the 1990 Spanish / 2000 Argentine / undated Mexican translations I have all bring up syphilis in Look Down #but the 2010 translation is the only one that also brings up gonorrhea #and it's also the only one that RHYMES SYPHILIS WITH PARIS #are these really the terms that poor uneducated 19th century prostitutes would be using ?????????#deleting this later #this has lived rent free in my head since the first time I heard this in like 2010/2011 when I first posted about it #the 2010 Los Mis also has Combeferre and Courfeyrac talking abt themselves in 3rd person in The Final Battle lmao

wow, I wish I'd known the Chess revival will be a concert staging (?!?) before I booked plane tickets/airbnb, arranged to work remotely in NYC for a month, and bought two full-price show tickets....

#well I'm doing this for my high school self I suppose #and there's certainly plenty of other stuff to do in nyc #I do have tix to the first preview so that should be. interesting
