“that’s dumb, man.” kaleb sighed. “those crazy people aside, how’s everything going, huh? we should make some time for each other and catch up at some point this week, i’ve been so busy lately i haven’t been seeing anyone and it’s making me insane.”
“Oh, my life is just peachy,” she answered sarcastically, but she was only teasing, she knew Kaleb meant well. “Yeah, if you can convince my boss to let me have a day off from hell, let’s hang.”

“Oh geez, that must have been a nightmare.” she giggled as she looked up at the girl’s hair. “Blue hair sounds cool though.”
“Made my life a living hell for three days. I wouldn’t have survived if they added it to the menu permanently,” Devin sighed, shaking her head to herself, “Yeah, blue hair might be cool, but not when you’ve spent as much money on your hair as I have.”

“secret menu? so that’s like a barista’s worst nightmare, right? ‘cause that sounds awful as it is. i mean, i don’t think i would like to have people telling me about this mystery service when i can’t even offer it to them. that’s like someone coming at me and demanding a weird ass doggy hairstyle i don’t even know about when i’d like to think i know my shit, ya know?”
“It’s a gimmick pinterest bloggers use to attract more views. All the secret menu really is, is different combinations of things we already make, given a fancy name,” she told him, talking over her shoulder as she went to pour the espresso he’d asked for.

“oh- i love the smell of coffee. i love coffee in general though, never really got how people load their coffee up with things such as creamer and sugar.” she wrinkled her nose in mild distaste. “you’re so annoying.” despite her words a grin was on her face, one that revealed that her words were false.
“You’d hate my clientele then. Most of them aren’t even getting coffee, just a vaguely-coffee tasting milkshake,” Devin grumbled, ever so positive about her job she, for reasons unknown, refused to quit. She finished the last of her cigarette, blowing a stream of smoke accompanied with a smirk, “Shut up, you know you love me.”

“Yeah, it certainly seems like something that was really blown out of proportion for the sake of the trend.” She agreed. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been getting coffee and didn’t hear someone else in the shop request the infamous unicorn drink. “I have faith that you’ll get through it though. Hopefully that is.”
“They were disgusting,” she groaned, “I’m glad we stopped selling them, but now it’s been months and people are still asking for them. It’s a whole new type of hell.”

“I’m actually so glad it’s not being sold anymore. Just looking at it made me feel sick.”
“Yeah, you don’t want to know what it was like to make them. Smelled so strongly, so sticky, got everywhere. I had blue powder in my white blonde hair for days.”

“wait, what?” kaleb tilted his head in confusion before taking his wallet out of his pocket and grabbing five dollars, handing them over to her. “they keep asking for it even though they know you don’t sell ‘em anymore? what kind of non-sense is that?”
“They were limited edition, we sold them for like, three days, and people still won’t get over them,” Devin explained casually, putting the cash in the register before pulling out his change and handing it back to him, “Yeah, it’s that whole ‘secret menu’ rumour. People think we’re just hiding things from them now.”

“thank you! it’s hard working smelling as good as i do, considering i work in greasy clubs most of the time.” she rolled her eyes without any malice. “well i hope i’m not boring you too much right now, then.”
“That is one of the few upsides to my job. I get to smell coffee all day long,” Devin mused, the slightest sing-song tone to her voice as she talked positively about her job, about anything, for the first time in a long while. “Wait, is this conversation not about sex?” she asked, faking a look of surprise.

“i can’t imagine having such a problem. have you considered dying it at all?” they inquired, stifling a yawn against the back of their hand. they used to dye their hair quite a bit but it’d been years since they’d done anything to it. devin had longer hair as well, which they could only assume to have been a pain to manage. “most people don’t take the time if they have it in their head what they want.”
“Oh honey, did you think this was natural?” she asked with a laugh, but she seemed genuinely flattered, “I guess I should thank you for implying it looks realistic. My hair is naturally a dark brown.” Devin had bleached her hair on a whim and ended up keeping it. “Well it would make my job a lot easier if they would just read.”

‘ oh … well, that was somewhat of an anti-climax. yet another person who doesn’t stick to their word, ‘ jun sighed at the long haired person in front of him, ‘ where’s the fun in asking you if you aren’t gonna quit your job? you can give me a cup of black coffee then. i hate frappuchinos. ‘
“Doesn’t count. Why do you want me to be homeless so bad, anyway?” She asked with a smirk, putting his order in the computer, “Did you want a grande? And before you say anything, yes, I’m required to call it that instead of ‘medium’.”

“i mean, that’s probably a bit extreme. sure, i don’t doubt that having to make them is annoying, but you’re getting paid so you don’t really have much room to complain. at the end of the day it’s just a drink. you shouldn’t let it bother you too much.”
“We don’t even make them anymore, haven’t for months. I don’t understand why people can’t read a damn menu and have to have someone spell it out for them.”

“well i’m not really trying to sleep with people, that’s not my goal here. i’m just trying to find interesting people to have a conversation with.” she laughed quietly. “i’ve never had anyone turn me down, because of smelling like smoke. that might just be, because i spray myself with cherry blossom perfume after every smoke break i take.” she paused for a moment, running a hand through her hair. “well i consider a successful conversation one that doesn’t make me want to run away, because i’m so bored. to be fair though, sex doesn’t seem like a bad way to measure either.”
“I’d criticize you for that type of high-maintenance if you didn’t smell so damn good all the time,” she chuckled, leaning her back against the wall. “I suppose that applies to me too, but most conversations bore me unless they’re about sex.”

“Exactly, it’s all about the amount of a fuss you make!” She pointed herself towards the pet shop, taking a few steps in that direction. “I mean, I totally could. But I’m really bad at making decisions, so I need someone else there for that part!”
“What sort of decision are you making I thought you were just petting fish or some shit,” she asked, confused, but intrigued enough not to leave the stranger.

their nose wrinkled. “how unfortunate,” they commented, only able to imagine such a thing. “was it a nice blue at least?” they yawned, words muffled as they covered their mouth with the back of their hand. “three days? no wonder. i can only imagine how annoying that must get- aside from how you’ve put it yourself. you should make stickers that say the unicorn frappe is extinct.”
“It was a light blue, yeah, it wasn’t too bad. I’ve got white blonde hair though, I would’ve been pissed if it had turned that blue,” Devin said, accentuating her high-maintenance statement with a rather low-maintenance tone of voice, “You’d think people would be able to read a damn menu, but of course not.”

“Don’t over exaggerate. It can’t be that bad,” Harper said with a light chuckle, heading shaking at their frustration. “I heard it taste like mango, is it true? Because I might be the next person to order one.”
“It was bad when we were still making them and I had to say ‘yes’. That was definitely worse,” she sighed, arms crossing, having heard the mango question hundreds of times, “It tasted like something who had never tasted a mango thought a mango would taste like. Or you know those little sour candies? Like all the sour crystals from those, mixed with soap.”

“I don’t know, I need the money. I could try to apply for another job, but this is as far into food service as I want to get, so my options are limited,” she shrugged, knowing that for as much as she complained, she didn’t make it much easier on herself. “Yeah, neon lights under your car just make you look like a douche.”
