“You can be a bit pessimistic at times but I’ve also been told I can be too cheerful and optimistic.  We just have to find the right balance so we don’t bother others.  Honestly, I’m jealous of you and Ortensia.  The two of you seem to already have the happily ever after future everyone dreams about with your marriage and little girl.”

“I’d like to think that we do. We got lucky after a long string of bad luck for both of us. I don’t think I can imagine having any other life at this point.”

“Have a little faith in yourself and Ortensia.  Doing your best is all that you can do.  I’m pretty sure most people are nervous and not sure if they’re ready when they first become parents.  You’re doing a wonderful job.  I’m so glad you were too, I’m thrilled to have a wonderful little girl like her in my life.”

“I do try to. I’ve been told in the past I’m a bit too pessimistic in general. Still have to work on it a bit, I guess. I can’t blame you though. She is a sweet little thing. Everyone seems glad to have her.”

“The two of you are both too sweet and nice to have a child with a horrible personality.  You’re also both not the type to spoil her rotten so you won’t have to worry about her being a brat.  Trust me she’s going to be an amazing woman because she has amazing parents.  What child isn’t a handful?  You have so much stuff you have to do for them growing up and they have a mind of their own so they rarely want to do the same thing as you.  Pets can be a handful so it’s no surprise children are too.”

“I hope you’re right about that, Minnie. We’re definitely doing our best. I wasn’t sure I was ready to take her in when we were first approached to do so, but it’s definitely been worth it. She’s a sweet kid. I’m glad we were able to take her rather than having her sent off to who knows where.”

“You might have once or twice,” Minnie answered shrugging.  “I’m sure you’d return the favor if Mickey and I have kids.  I don’t mind.  I love babysitting.  I’m sure she won’t with the two of you raising her.  I don’t think it’s possible for the two of you too raise a brat or hellion.”

“I appreciate that vote of confidence. Hopefully it holds true as she gets older and she doesn’t turn out quite like some of the teenagers we know. I doubt she could ever really be a brat, but being a handful in general is never really out of the question.”

“It’s no problem at all.  I love watching Zinnia.  She’s so sweet.  I adore getting to spend time with my almost niece.  What time will you two be back?  It doesn’t make a difference when, I can watch her over night and into the morning a bit.”

“Have I told you that you’re a lifesaver?” Oswald asked with a grin. “I’m glad she has you convinced of that. Hopefully she stays that way and never makes finding babysitters for her too difficult.”

Gertrude nodded. “Children are wonderful when they’re young. I don’t mean to squash the idea of free-spirited children–” yes she did “–but when they become more independent and rebellious, that’s the time I fear.” She nods at the thought. “But every child is different.”

She grinned in turn as the man went for the bottle. “Excellent. Perfect. Need some variety in drinks.” Gertrude smiles nearly broadly at him. “If you had to pick any… for yourself… what would you have?”

“Of course. I like to think I’m as prepared for that as I can be. The fact that she is already her uncle’s biggest fan may have been a good start.” Oswald grinned. He had jokingly called Zinnia a traitor for that more than once.

“I’m honestly a whisky man when I do drink.” He said as he poured her a glass. “Not that I do very often though.”

“Teenagers are a tough crowd,” Gertrude agreed. But she unexpectedly smiled at the idea of a three-year old girl named Zinnia. Gertrude did not care for children the same, but sometimes… just a thought could bring her the slightest bit of a smile. “She sounds lovely. Maybe she’ll be different,” she offers. “You never know what could happen.”

Gertrude examined the shelf behind him. But then smiled at his suggestion. “A merlot is good. That might do. What about something… stronger?” She asks, eyeing a few amber colored bottles lining the wall.

“She’s lovely most days. Hopefully that will stick as she gets older. Still lots of time until then anyway. Even if it is likely to by pretty quickly.”

“Alright.” Oswald grinned, turning towards the shelf that the woman’s eyes had gone towards and grabbing one of the bottles. “I think I can do that.”

“I don’t know about a chip, but she’s got a tag. It’s just her name, though.” Koda shrugged. “I would have already called if there was a number or anything.” The chip was a good idea, though. He’d never known many dogs with them and had forgotten they were a thing.

“That might be worth it to look into then. Maybe there’s something in the tag they can scan that isn’t indicated. If the owner doesn’t turn up soon it would be something to do next, at least.”

“It’s not an easy job,” Gertrude said, dropping her Emily persona half-way. She could be honest about her disinterest in teaching at times. Sometimes she wondered why she didn’t become a florist or something. She was good at that. For lord’s sake, she was an agricultural genius despite the lack of a formal degree. (Of current validity.) “A toddler?” Now the Emily smile was back, as if she could actually care for children. “How charming. How old?”

Gertrude had a picture of Rapunzel somewhere. A few, actually. But hidden. In a scrapbook under other pictures in her apartment. But make no mistake. It was not out of love. It was out of planning her manipulations. She held onto pictures of her students and of those who Rapunzel loved in case… leverage needed to be used. 

He asked about what drink of choice she would prefer, and she thought for a moment. “Oh, I don’t know. Try to sell me on something else if you think it’ll be better than a syrah.”

“I can believe that. Few of my friends have teenagers and I can already tell I am not looking forward to that.” Oswald chuckled. It was sometimes hard to imagine Zinnia being even more difficult than she was already, but it was undeniable that they still had a lot of years of her life ahead of them that would cause new struggles. “Three. Name’s Zinnia.”

“Hm. Tough call.” Oswald chuckled, turning back towards the bar shelves. “But I might have something that could suffice here. I’m usually more partial to merlots.”

“Only if someone found out,” Koda countered. But he wasn’t going to do that. Not really. “Yeah, I know, I don’t want to think someone left her on purpose.”

“Does he have a tag? Or any indication of a chip or something? If he’s registered then maybe you can ask someone at a shelter if they can help you find the owner.”
