Imagine running D&D and needing another player to Co-DM because you struggle get your players to pick up the quest/plot lines and neither the players nor the DM actually know what they spells they chose actually do. For example, not knowing that sacred flame deals radiant damage.
Itâs kinda annoying to be said co-DM, taking notes and trying to chug along the other party members so the pacing isnât completely rubbish. Itâs even more annoying when a hyped up boss takes hours to reach without any combat to break up the monotony, only for said boss to not actually be there in the end, having a player jump in and out ultimately doing nothing but make references and crack one joke, and to top it all off some bizarre twist that had no foreshadowing except for the jump-in player talking about it because itâs a part of the game theyâre referencing.
For clarity, I will name the game and unforeseen end of session twist. The player who jumped in (for probably less than an hour) was making Genshin Impact references with their character being more or less the gameâs poster girl. The twist was that the bossâ minion and the item the party was sent to find turned into slime. The session was roughly six hours long. Six hours for the hyped up boss to not even show up, and then itâs minion and the item the party spent the the session trying to retrieve to turn into slime at the very end.
Next session the DM asked me to explain what happened to a player whose character wasnât even there before the start of the session.
