That is not to say you don't reciprocate his love. You do, even as a child, you really loved Phainon—albeit not yet on the same level as him.

Once the two of you grow up, Phainon's fondness for you never ceases. If anything, his advances became refined by time and… advice given by the adults around him.

He recalled the way his mother giggled to herself when he returned home after yet another failed attempt in swooning you, “maybe make a homemade meal? The way to one's heart is through the stomach after all.” Her suggestion sounded.. Perfect. Or maybe it was his empty stomach speaking for him at that moment, but he decided cooking you a meal should work.

So, the next day, Phainon brought a packed lunch with him when he went to meet you under the big tree—where you spent most of your childhood together, taking shelter under the leaves during summer and watching the once green leaf turn shades of orange during fall.

You were already there, laid down on the grass, watching clouds move above in the vast blue sky. His foot stepped on a small branch, creating a cracking sound, loud enough for you to hear. “.. Oh! Phainon!” you sat up as he finally reached you.

He smiles and places the packed lunch between the two of you. Not yet saying a word. He allows you to curiously inspect the wrapped box, waiting for the expected question, “What did you bring?” And his smile widens even more.

“It's very special.” He claims rather proudly that you responded with an amused huffing. And while you may attempt to look uninterested, he could see the lingering curiosity in your eyes. “.. Do you wanna know?” He leans closer to you.

“Duh, that's why I asked.” You didn't pull away, eyes fixated on the box.

He chuckles, fingers deliberately slowing his movements as his fingers untie the fabric surrounding the packed lunch. Filling an air of suspension as he reveals the wooden lunch box under.

You raised a brow, but continued to watch just with little less interest. “.. Well?” You nudge him to hurry on.

“Patience, my friend.” the nickname that he hopes will never be used when referring to you after this moment. He opens the lead and with a proud smile, he holds it up to you.

A salad, curated by him. All from his family's personal garden which he takes great pride in because he had cared for the vegetables since childhood. And now he presents it to you!

His eyes twinkle with excitement of what your reaction would be. “.. Soo? What do you think?” He's practically holding back a wide smile from spreading on his cheeks.

“It looks.. Good!” You seem hesitant and even confused. Which definitely did not fit his expectations.

He stares at you, waiting for more, but you simply stare back.

Huh..

“.. I made this for you.” He said, hoping the clarification would help you realize his intention. You acknowledge his words with a small nod, your mouth forming an ‘o’ as you take another look at the salad.

Then came that charming smile of yours, he shifts in his seat because finally, you realize the reason behind his action and you'll finally—

“Thank you, Phainon! You're too kind really..” you lift both hands to grab the box, hovering over it as you wait for him to hand it over. But he continues to remain fixated on your face.

You blink, confused by the sudden quietness from your usual chatty friend. “.. You okay?”

Your question managed to snap him back to reality as he handed the box over to you with a strained chuckle. “I'm sorry! I guess I was hypnotized by your pretty eyes. It's as if they've gotten brighter each day I see you.” Despite you rolling your eyes, assuming that he's simply being dramatic—he isn't. He truly meant those words.

As he watches you take a bite of the fresh tomatoes, his gaze lowers to your lips. Soft and glistening from the vegetables’ excess juice. For a moment, he imagined if his feelings for you will ever be reciprocated… You’ve been friends since you were children.. Even then he already liked you, even if he didn’t fully grasp the depths of his feelings until now. With each attempt ending up in failure, a voice in his head whispers that this feeling is simply one sided and he’s fighting a battle destined to lose.

But—

“Phainon,” You called out to him, holding up a tomato to his lips. “these are super fresh! Try it!”

He parts his lips, taking a bite and humming softly. It was, as you said, fresh. He didn’t get a chance to have a taste while preparing it, but it’s good to know he was right with his observation. His eyes flicker up to meet yours. “..Mhm, it’s good—Wait, why am I complimenting this?! I’m the one who made it!” He huffs.

You laugh, a melodic sound that silences the whispers in his mind. “But it is good, you have to admit it!” as finish the last piece of vegetable, happily humming to yourself.

Perhaps you won’t notice his endeavor in romancing you, but—as long as he’s able to see you smile with each failed attempt, then, they weren’t failures after all.

Phainon later returns home with an empty lunch box and a smile on his face, Audata greets him with an expected smile and excitement behind her eyes as she approaches her son. “Did she..?”

Her son halts, his cheeks flushing once he realizes what she’s implying. “..Not yet.” he shakes his head, but his gaze softens. “But I’m making progress.”

Audata huffs, but seems proud nonetheless as she lays a gentle hand over his head. “My boy grew up so quickly,” she sighs dramatically. “next thing I know you’ll be asking her parents for permission.”

Phainon let out a strained laugh, his face heating up as he rubbed the back of his head with his free hand. “Mom.. I’m—we’re not on that level yet..” hand going limp as Audata takes the empty box from his hand.

“... if you’d like, I can head to her house and ask her—”

“Please don’t!” He squeaks out. Audata only laughed in response.
