thinking about pandora hearts and how its core theme is affirmation of one's existence, starting with acknowledgement of their personhood and allowing their presence to exist as is (re: the chain and contractor relationship from the very beginning, oz with alice & echo, alice and gilbert with oz, even lacie with the core of the abyss, etc)

and part of affirming one's existence is to acknowledge that one has desires—selfish desires, even. the flow of the narrative constantly goes against those who claim their actions is for justice (oz going against leo and then leo going against oswald later on)/for the sake of others (break going against vincent; and jack... you know what he did). the core of the abyss as well (knowing companionship and loneliness bc of lacie, and not wanting to let alyss/the intention of the abyss go). the protagonists' actions force the antagonists to acknowledge their own desires/some degree of self interest behind what they claim is for others' sake, before it circles back to affirmation of existence.

ughhh need to connect this but sth sth about every single identity reveal is followed by acknowledgement of their identity via their name (oz by gil... echo...) and finally leo affirming the core's existence by giving it a name (though unknown to us)....

having a process for people who have done morally horrific things to make amends, rejoin community, and do right going forward is actually fundamentally crucial for the left. having a clear and accessible pathway for people to be socially (if not interpersonally) forgiven is how you get people radicalized against capitalism and imperialism and white supremacy and patriarchy. its how you turn "these people think i am a bad person" into "these people think something and someone coerced or forced me into doing bad things, and these people want to help me do something about that."

if you want more revolutionaries, you must have a system to turn guilty, traumatized, angry bystanders and collaborators into revolutionaries. and I say a system and process because its not "oh the drone operator said they were sorry and felt bad so its all good now :)" there is no shortcut here. but it is absolutely necessary. no revolution is comprised of morally pure people. in many cases, the most devoted revolutionaries are the ones who know exactly what it is like on the other side.

I just realized that the Chinese character for Qian, the Heaven Trigram, is 乾, which in Japanese also means "dry."

Which makes the concept of "drying out" in Karakasa make a hell of a lot more sense.

The Ooku is a place where one aspires to Heaven, to the divine, metaphorically via its connection to Tenshi, the "son of Heaven," the highest-ranked position in the land, and more literally via the worship of Omizu-sama. Tenshi saying "I am dry" refers to his supposedly divine status, and being or becoming dry means seeking or maintaining a divine status.

Hence the risk of "drying out" when one enters the Ooku and begins this aspiration.

I think the idea is that it's necessary to maintain balance between being "dry" and being "wet," or between Heaven and earth, and to not lose touch with "earth" in one's quest for the divine.

Movie Medicines Seller, who carries the sword of Kon, Earth, is there to correct the "drying out" of those who have lost their connection to earth in their aspirations to Qian (乾, Heaven) or to kawaki (乾き, dryness).

big fan of liars. big fan of characters whose entire existence is a facade. love it when everything's stripped away from them and the lie is the only thing left of their identity. love it when the lines between an act and the truth are blurring. are they even them without the lie? the lie doesn't become the truth per se, but it's now such an intricate part of them it might as well be.
