Neil couldn’t quite believe his ears. While he had been intent on running, or even turning himself in, Lyle was helping him hide a murder, building a cover for him. His brother was willing to risk everything to assure that the both of them could continue living as they had been, even if that felt so unlikely to Neil.

It was terrifying for him to know that his brother was willing to go so far to keep him safe, but at the same time his loyalty was heartwarming. They had butt heads in the past, yet Lyle was there to help him when his stupid mistakes could have ruined him, right when he needed him the most.

Neil took a slow, steadying breath, the grip loosening on his shirt. “Yeah…a big guy. Said his name was Martin, Marty, something like that…Gave me some money and told me to ask around. We…We’re hard up for cash, and our aunt only has so much, you know? I did it to try and help. I made a mistake.”

It was scary how easily he could corroborate a story alongside his brother, but wasn’t that a thing that twins could do? Seamlessly build a web of lies and half-truths to escape the reality they were facing…Horrible, yet a relief all the same.

“We…we stash the money away. Save it for when we really need it. And…We should get rid of the gun.”

“Y...yeah, big guy and we really need money. Denise doesn’t make much and teenagers are hungry...” Lyle muttered under his breath. This was insane...but he knew it could work. If they were smart, at least. It would be difficult, but they could do it.

And things had been difficult since their parents and Amy had died anyway.

“It won’t happen again...” Lyle swallowed dryly. Except...knowing them...

No. It wasn’t going to happen again. This was it. They were going to be good from now on. They were going to be safe.

“Yeah...um...scrap it and melt it down...?” Or they could simply try to toss it somewhere. But that seemed too...stupid. They needed to be thorough. They needed to cover this up.

Because Lyle wasn’t losing his twin brother. Even if Neil was intent on trying to ruin himself.

“Knowing our hacker? Probably in less than twenty four hours…less than twelve if he’s not doing anything.” He wished he was kidding since it never sounded believable of what Golden was able to do, but he gave results.

“If that’s the case, I will get you in contact with Golden Heart. He’ll probably use the same connections that we did to get in contact with you.” He didn’t bother asking for his contact info, Golden had his ways of getting that with only just a name.

“It’s been a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Dylandy, I’m sure Gaius will be pleased that you took the job.” 

Golden Heart. That was a name that Lyle had heard repeatedly. Because the twins were acquaintances with him - or friends? Whatever hackers did. Did they do friends? Lyle wasn’t really sure...

“Well, looks like I’ll have to then. Let him know that he can get in contact with me.” Lyle would have Regene making sure everything was legit just to be safe.

Not that safety was Lyle’s biggest priority anymore. Since Neil had...well. Lyle was less careful than he should be.

“Yes, it’s been a pleasure.” He offered a hand to the other man.

“Stream, like listening to a river on Earth?” Michael didn’t understand the term, but he was soon distracted by an idea. “Stream of water or stream of comet tails! I don’t draw tails like you so let’s see!”

Michael looked dreamy for a moment, like he was lost in a memory. “There was a comet on my birthday. October 24th, 2288. Nagata. I saw it just a little, there was one skylight and I remember that bright thing before they put me in stasis and filled that skylight in. I wanted to see it again…and I did.” He blushed. “Mrkos passed over me and Tieria while we were recovering on earth. That…that was the first night we kissed.”

Seemingly out of nowhere he whipped out his triple bladed knife and held the tip of it to Lyle’s nose, though his blush didn’t fade. “If you tell anyone you’re screwed, got it?” Just as quickly, he tossed it aside and dove back into the crayons, picking out cerulean blue, royal purple, maximum red, apricot, almond, black, canary, cotton candy, beaver, neon carrot, cosmic cobalt, twilight lavender, quick silver, and one glitter crayon - white with confetti glitter, which looked brand new.

“Like a shooting star, ‘cross the midnight sky, wherever you are you’re gonna see me fly…!”

Lyle was about to launch into an explanation of streaming music, but Michael was quickly distracted by streams of water or comet tails. he closed his mouth and couldn’t help but smile. It was nice to see this side of him. 

But what was more unexpected was the memories that Michael shared immediately following that quick change of topic. Lyle was...surprised...that he was having things shared with him. He wasn’t as integrated in the crew as others, he was almost used to being a bit of an outsider. Maybe that was just because he felt awkward with everyone still. But...it was sweet that Michael was saying them.

As soon as the thought of Michael being sweet passed through his mind, there was a knife being held to the tip of his nose. To his credit, he didn’t even flinch. Just gave Michael an almost amused look. Yup, he was definitely getting younger brother vibes from Michael. Lyle really had missed being an older sibling. “I’m not telling anyone, alright?”

He watched as Michael grabbed a whole slew of interestingly named crayons and felt that smile twitch at his lips again as Michael started singing.

“I saw a shooting star once with my younger sister.” Lyle’s voice was soft when he spoke. “I was thirteen, she was seven. We shouldn’t have been up, but...” They had been. They had been up and watching the skies because Amy couldn’t sleep and Lyle had woken up before Neil had. “It was really something...”

He went quiet a moment later - he probably shouldn’t be talking about his sister right now. He was pretty sure he hadn’t even told Neil about that night. It had been something special between him and Amy. Their shooting star. He wasn’t even sure why he’d brought it up...

Neil couldn’t help but laugh. Honestly, this was too much of a coincidence for him not to. He stepped closer, his hands falling to the button of his jeans. “No, no, I’m not laughing at you, Lyle.”

He began to unfasten his jeans, tugging them down a bit over his hips, boxers in tow. “Seriously, I’m not. Don’t look at me like that.”

The fact that Neil wasn’t laughing at Lyle didn’t really help the matter of his saltiness and irritation. Not at all, actually. The irritation had already settled in. And then his brother started unbuttoning his jeans and tugging them down, boxers and all. “Hey hey...what the feck...I don’t need to see your arse in return!”

Lyle held his hands up to cover his eyes before he saw his brother’s identically pale arse. “Feckin’ hell Neil! What the hell!”

Neil wished he could say he hadn’t expected the punch. But given all that had happened and the manner that both he and his brother handled emotion – which was, admittedly, not always healthy and or productive – he really felt he should have expected to get clocked. He just didn’t really expect it when he was in the middle of an emotional moment with Tieria.

At the very least Lyle had made sure that Tieria didn’t get caught in the fisticuffs. For that much he was grateful, the extra care taken for his lover’s safety.

Neil was sent reeling, nearly knocked off balance by the sudden fist to the jaw. Yet where anger would have normally boiled to the surface and resulted in an equivalent exchange of blows, Neil could only ruefully rub his cheek and give his brother a furtive look.

“Okay, you got your one, Lyle.” He mumbled, opening and closing his mouth, tasting the blood but feeling nothing broken. A plus. He glanced to the door, noting Regene standing there in shock at the sight. Eyes wide, skin pale, the lead of a white fluffy dog in hand. They’d both made it safe.

Tieria yelped when Neil was pulled away from him, already starting to protest the lack of contact. But he went utterly silent when he heard the sound of fist hitting face. He watched Neil reel back, but merely accept the blow like he deserved it. Somehow…seeing that defeated resignation there hurt Tieria, it made his heart ache.

Granted, it wasn’t like Tieria could really lecture on that. It wasn’t like he’d been a shining example of ‘good choices’ in the four years alone. But now wasn’t the time to think about what had happened during those four years - Tieria needed to focus on what was going on in the present. He was with Neil. Lyle and Regene and Fish had arrived safely. And now…now he wasn’t certain what happened.

He glanced over at his twin, eyes wide. He wasn’t sure how to diffuse this, or if he even should. Because Neil and Lyle needed to work things out…and they had always had the tendency to speak with their fists…

Tieria glanced down at the ground and fidgeted with the fabric of his trousers. The fluffy white dog (Fish), seemed to notice the anxiety that Tieria was in, and was pulling on the lead to go over and comfort him. 

He swallowed dryly. “N…Neil, you’re okay, yeah?” There, he’d managed to say something, though it wasn’t particularly good or useful. Of course he isn’t okay, he’s just come out of hiding and his twin brother decked him instantly upon seeing him. “Reggie…d…did the trip here go smoothly?”

Lyle exhaled and shook his hand out again. One hit, Neil was limiting him to one hit after disappearing for four years. He clenched his jaw so tightly that it felt like his teeth might crack. There was a certain irritation at the fact that Neil had managed to stay on his feet rather than getting knocked to the ground - had four years of too much alcohol and too much sulking made him weak?

That probably wasn’t what he was supposed to be focusing in on.

Calm down, Dylandy. Stop acting like Neil.

He was allowed to be upset, angry even. But he needed to keep his head otherwise he’d just wind up punching Neil again. 

Lyle stepped back from his brother and finally seemed to notice the eye patch over his shooting eye. He’d heard what happened from Regene after things had settled some - meaning once Tieria had calmed a little and once Lyle was willing to see people again. He knew that there had been a close range shot, one that was presumably fatal given how Tieria had reacted. Lyle had even seen the video - though that was only when Regene was removing it from Tieria’s rig.

Yet he still hadn’t expected the eye patch.

He glanced over his shoulder at Regene and Tieria and was pleased to see Fish doing his job perfectly. Good.

He wanted to say he was happy to see that his brother was alive - he was happy that Neil was alive. But at the same time he was pissed. Tieria had been alone in all that time. And Lyle had thought he’d lost his only family. “You’re an arse. Feckin’ hell, you...” Lyle clenched his hands into fists to keep from doing something stupid. “You have a lot to explain. You that to all of us.”

Alright, so I won NaNoWriMo (wooo!) a couple days ago. Today is catch up time on my ongoing fanfic (sins of a cybernetic empire). 

But by Monday I should be back here…? I’ll still be ‘slow’ by most peoples’ standards, but I should be back. Things will be ‘settling’. Given that writing is my job, tumblr might get pushed to the side at times? You know, if my hands need a break or other things. Like deadlines. Oh deadlines…

“I wonder if space faeries look like flutterbies. Hm.” Michael glowed at the compliment though.

“There’s lots of music on the internet and radio if you know where to look. It’s not that hard to remember.” Michael glanced between his drawing and Lyle’s, wondering if he should add a tail to his own creation. He didn’t usually draw tails unless he was strictly drawing cats. He decided against it, liking the puffball look. Spreading the two pictures he’d done for himself in front of him he grinned, liking how they’d come out and wondering what would go with them. He liked to do his pictures in batches of three.

“Hm...hard to say, right?” It had been so long since he’d been able to act like a big brother to someone, this felt nice. Plus, it was good to unwind and coloring was relaxing in a way. Maybe it was because he didn’t do much of it anymore. “I suppose that’s true. I stream music pretty often.” 

He just had trouble remembering lyrics sometimes.

“I like the puffball fairy, very cute. Have you named them yet?” Lyle kept working on his version of a fairy - which he thought looked pretty okay. Better than kindergartner, more like...he didn’t know...maybe 3rd grader. Maybe. If he was being generous.

“Flutterby? I thought they’d be fluffy. Interesting.” Michael drew two black oval eyes on his fairy and then pressed down hard to draw the outline of two spring green beetle-like wings on its back, shading them in lightly.

“Hm…now how do I…” He stuck out his tongue again, drawing two single line arms with little balls as hands in such a way that they looked to be holding something up. “Aha!” What it turned out to be was a five pointed leaf drawn with polished pine, with fern colored veins, held like an umbrella and shaded as such too. As the finishing touch, Michael took the sky blue glitter crayon and added some dewdrops to the grass and one fat droplet dripping off the tip of the leaf in front of his fairy’s head.

“There! Something like that, right?” Impulsively he hummed a few notes of another song without waiting for an answer. “The fairies would not answer her, the stones were dark and slept, a babe was all she’d asked for and their promises they’d kept…”

“Maybe they’re all a little different and that’s why there’s so many different stories about fairies.” Lyle colored lightly with the blue. He guessed that looked okay? He added on a tail because he thought that was cute, though he wasn’t entirely sure why. He set the blue aside and reached for red, mainly for accents.

It felt like this thought was just circling in his mind - that Michael was very good with crayons, but he couldn’t help it. Michael was very good with them and Lyle felt like he was basically doing the equivalent of a kindergartner’s work.

“That looks really cool!” And Lyle meant it. It really did look good. He paused when Michael started singing again. “you know a lot of songs too, don’t you.”

Michael patted the floor next to him and pushed over a clean piece of paper for Lyle, taking the gemtone emerald and silver swirl sugar plum crayons for himself. He grinned. Sugar plum, like the song. Now what was a fairy ring really? Fallen stars? That seemed right. He drew long strokes of grass, the gemtone crayon giving the effect of morning drew, and eight pointed sugar plum stars in a circle around it.

Now for the fairy itself. Something small, probably with wings. He selected peach and melon, layering them to make a fuzzy ball-like creature and then traced skinny purple legs and birdlike feet his orchid crayon with the turquoise glitter. Hm…what color eyes did he want to give it? He also wanted to give it a leaf, but he wasn’t sure where. He turned around to rummage through the crayon pile, eventually returning with two glitter crayons - black and sky blue both with gold glitter - polished pine, spring green, and fern.

“What’s yours look like?” He tilted his head over at Lyle. “You better be keeping the ends pointy.”

Alright. Now came the hard part. Drawing a fairy. When was the last time Lyle had drawn something? There was a mental pause and a faint blush on his cheeks - when was the last time he had drawn something that wasn’t lewd. He distinctly remembered drawing a certain part of the male anatomy on someone’s forehead when he was in college.

He peeked over at Michael’s drawing and was impressed at how quickly it was coming together. Perhaps that dedication was inspiring Lyle to try harder with the drawing, or perhaps he just wanted to try and be artistic. So he started by lightly sketching out a slim figure with very butterfly-esque wings. It wasn’t a good drawing by any stretch, but he was clearly making an attempt. Maybe he needed some blue too...blue and green went together nicely...

“Uh...kinda like a butterfly?” Lyle glanced over to Michael and smiled. “Yeah, I’m keeping the ends pointy.”

“Well Ti teaches me a lot.” He picked up a red crayon and started on the eyes - the iris was a strange shape like two ovals overlapping with a tiny blue pupil in the center. The scleras it appeared would be black. “Like Drakon here.” He finally held the finished drawing up. It looked like a young girl at first glance, but could easily be a young boy wearing a dress. They had short, scruffy black hair, black cat ears, pure white skin that wasn’t colored in, wore a primary black dress with red and lavender lace patterns, and bore the aforementioned strange eyes.

“They’re the spirit of the cat’s-eye nebula, the most complex polan…planetary nebula we know. Drakon’s name is like that because it’s in the constellation Draco. They didn’t have cat ears at first but when they heard about the name, they gave themself cat eats because they liked how it looked. The structure is complicated ‘cause Drakon’s scared of humans and doesn’t like being watched or studied. Only nebulas and things that are well known have spirits like them though, ‘cause we give them attention and that gives them energy.”

It was abundantly clear that while perhaps Michael had listened to what Tieria taught him, he understood very little of it and was filling in the blanks himself, some with bits of information he’d picked up from stories and much from his own imagination.

“I could draw others like Aoi, the spirit of Regulus who fell to Earth during the 1883 Leonids. He has blue hair like me. Or Anya and Nina, the sisters of the Tun…gus-ka and Sh-shel…yabink meteors.” He staggered noticeably over the pronunciation. There were still words Michael didn’t know in English, young as he was, it was expected that he would have trouble with something like Russian. “But I kinda wanna draw a fairy first. Will you draw one with me?” He offered Lyle a leaf-green crayon with an expectant look.

The things Michael was saying were a strange mishmash between scientific fact (Lyle recognized some of them from reading he’d done in his spare time) and a very, very creative imagination. Yeah, that kind of creativity reminded him of his sister. 

“Well, Drakon is very pretty, I like the kitty ears.” Really, the amount of detail Michael was getting with crayon was pretty incredible. Lyle knew he wouldn’t be able to draw a lace pattern with a crayon. Or anything. Lyle wasn’t artistically inclined. At all. “Hm...so there’s a lot of spirits out there then...”

At least he could make that assumption. 

Lyle tilted his head as Michael stumbled over the words - he had to admit he struggled with foreign languages as well. Most of the time he wound up speaking them with a raging Irish accent. He blinked when the crayon was offered to him. “I’ll draw a fairy with you, sure. But I’m not very good at drawing.”

Michael nodded proudly. “You’ll get some as long as you keep being nice. You’re from the back side of the moon, right? Like in my picture book? Hmm…” He stuck his tongue out a little as he tried to get the details of the pattern right.

Seemingly satisfied, he took a light purple crayon and started adding another pattern to the hem and a stripe to the puffed sleeves, as well as one to the short silver hair and an outline to the black patterned choker. This cat-creautre, whatever it was, was certainly detailed for a crayon drawing and it didn’t even have eyes yet.

“Hm, guess I’ll have to be good if it means getting candy.” Lyle shrugged, his face set in a playful grin. Now he really was craving candy. He wondered if he’d be able to find some on the ship... “Mhm, back side of the moon.” 

He didn’t see any harm in playing along with Michael on this. There was something about the situation that felt very familiar, maybe Michael believing so strongly in things reminded him of how Amy had been. He’d dealt with his sister being told Santa didn’t exist by some older kids in the neighborhood, he’d hated seeing her cry, seeing that loss of innocence. Maybe that’s why he felt the strong need to play along. 

Though, he did have to commend Michael for the detail with crayon. Lyle wondered what he’d be able to accomplish with colored pencils or those fancy-pants markers. “What other space things do I have to learn about? I haven’t been up here as long as the others.”
