The costars had a passionate affair throughout the production of Funny Girl in 1967, the same summer the Israeli-Egyptian Six Day War broke out. Images of Jewish actress Streisand and Egyptian actor Sharif kissing caused a scandal, inflamed political tensions, and nearly got Sharif banned from Egypt. The Jewish backers of the film wanted Sharif fired, but Streisand and director William Wyler threatened to quit if Sharif left the production. Streisand, who was a vocal supporter of Israel, was so affected by the backlash, she stopped performing live for decades afterwards. Although the stars thought themselves madly in love at the time, the relationship ended when filming wrapped.
