WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Â Â Â
Stay with us and keep calm. The last thing we need when weâre panicking, is to have someone else panicking with us.
Offer medicine if we usually take it during an attack. You might have to ask whether or not we take medicine- heck, some might not; but please, ask. It really helps.
Move us to a quiet place. We need time to think, to breathe. Being surrounded by people isnât going to help.
Donât make assumptions about what we need. Ask. Weâll tell you what we need. Sometimes; you may have to ask- but never assume.
Speak to us in short, simple sentences.
Be predictable. Avoid surprises.
Help slow our breathing by breathing us or by counting slowly to 10. As odd as it sounds, it works.
WHAT YOU SHOULDNâT DO: 1. Say, âYou have nothing to be panicked about.â We know. We know. We know. And because we know we have nothing to be panicked about, we panic even more. When I realize that my anxiety is unfounded, I panic even more because then I feel like Iâm not in touch with reality. Itâs unsettling. Scary. Most of the time, a panic attack is irrational. Sometimes they stem from circumstances â a certain couch triggers a bad memory or being on an airplane makes you claustrophobic or a break up causes you to flip your lid â but mostly, the reasons Iâm panicking are complex, hard to articulate or simply, unknown. I could tell myself all day that I have no reason to be having a panic attack and I would still be panicking. Sometimes, because Iâm a perfectionist, I become even more overwhelmed when I think my behaviour is âunacceptableâ (as I often believe it is when Iâm panicking). I know itâs all in my mind, but my mind can be a pretty dark and scary place when it gets going. Alternate suggestion: Say, âI understand youâre upset. It is okay. You have a right to be upset and I am here to help.â 2. Say, âCalm down.â This reminds me of a MadTV sketch where Bob Newhart plays a therapist who tells his patients to simply âStop it!â whenever they express anxiety or fear. As a sketch, itâs funny. In real life, itâs one of the worst things you can do to someone having a panic attack. When someone tells me to âstop panickingâ or to âcalm down,â I just think, âOh, okay. I havenât tried that one. Hold on, let me get out a pen and paper and jot that down, you jerk.â Instead of taking action so that they do relax, simply telling a panicking person to âcalm downâ or âstop itâ does nothing. No-thing. Alternate suggestion: The best thing to do is to listen and support. In order to calm them down without the generalities, counting helps. 3. Say, âIâm just going to leave you alone for a minute.â Being left alone while panicking makes my heart race even harder. The last thing I want is to be left by myself with my troubled brain. Many of my panic attacks spark from over-thinking and itâs helpful to have another person with me, not only for medical reasons (in case I pass out or need water) but also itâs helpful to have another person around to force me to think about something other than the noise in my head. Alternate suggestion: It sometimes helps me if the person Iâm with distracts me by telling me a story or sings to me. I need to get out of my own head and think about something other than my own panic. 4. Say, âYouâre overreacting.â Hereâs the thing: Iâm not. Panic attacks might be in my head, but Iâm in actual physical pain. If youâd cut open your leg, no one would be telling you youâre overreacting. Itâs a common trope in mental health to diminish the feelings or experience of someone suffering from anxiety or panic because thereâs no visible physical ailment and because thereâs no discernible reason for the person to be having such a strong fear reaction. The worst thing you can tell someone who is panicking is that they are overreacting. Alternate suggestion: Treat a panic attack like any other medical emergency. Listen to what the person is telling you. Get them water if they need it. It helps me if someone rubs my back a little. If youâre in over your head, donât hesitate to call 911 (or whatever the emergency services number is where you are). But please, take the person seriously. Mental health deserves the same respect as physical health.

What they donât tell you: Self care sometimes isnât fun. Itâs going to class even when you want to stay in bed and rest. Itâs paying bills on time and running errands even when every strand of your being cant stand it. Itâs going to therapy and taking your medicine even when you donât want to. Itâs using coping skills even when going back to self destructive ones seems more appealing.
Recovering sucks. Itâs hard. But you have to believe in the light at the end of the tunnel. And even on those days you donât, you fake it till you make it.
Recovery is still worth it.
Sometimes self-care is taking care of future-me. Because she deserves to have someone looking out for her.Â
rules to love a girl who is struggling to love herself. âĄ
one. - when she cries herself to sleep six out of seven nights a week you must say nothing. you must simply take her in your arms and kiss her gaunt, pale cheeks and wait for her to slumber at the sound of your heart.
two. - on the days where she wishes she were part of the stars, tell her no. tell her that there are too many lights in the sky and that just one would be forgotten the moment you looked away from it. tell her that she is perfect the way she is: completely human.
three. - donât let her think about the scars that no one but her can see. if she says âi think iâm brokenâ smile like you know a secret and say, âno, youâre mending.â but do not be the one to fix her - no, she must be the one to do it herself, and you merely are there to quietly encourage her.
four. - read her poetry (even if you are not a poet), the kind that uses flowery words and compares girls to the moon; the kind that you will rewrite for her. make her a warrior. make her a goddess with eyes like a wolfâs and a smile like a tigerâs.
five. - laugh with her the first thing in the morning and the last thing before you fall asleep. tell her cheap puns that youâve been thinking of for weeks. and when she smiles - the type of smile that could bring you to your knees if you arenât careful - know that for the moment, sheâs yours. she is whole.
six. - love her. love her like a fish loves the sea or a bird loves the sky. love her in the way that your heart feels like itâs going to burst at any moment every time it beats. love her skin and the way it feels against your own, soft and warm and utterly flawless. love her for the way her voice trembles when she canât keep it together anymore and love her when she holds onto you as if you were the only thing that was keeping her alive.
seven. - love her, because some days she just canât do it herself.
Me: *playing on my phone in bed*
Daddy: *comes in the room*
Me: *shoves phone into the blankets and smiles suspiciously at Daddy*
Daddy: Kitten, why did you hide your phone?
Me: What phone?
Daddy: Babygirl, what were you looking at?
Me: I wasn't looking at anything. Nope. In fact I've never looked at anything ever in my life.
Daddy: Give me your phone.
Me: come to think of it, I don't have a phone!
Daddy: No? Well if you don't have a phone I guess there's no point in Daddy paying that expensive phone bill of yours every month.. I'll just go cancel your phone plan then! *turns to walk out of the room*
Me: ... Uhm..! Daddy...!
Daddy: *turns back around, comes in, and looks at me* Do you have something to tell me kitten?
Me: ... I ... Uh...
Daddy: give me your phone. Now.
Me: ... *looks panicked*
