I know you get a lot of art asks, but how do you pick your colors for shading?
Also your stuff is gorgeous btw 🩷
Thank you! 🖤
This is outdated but if you want a more detailed shading technique or whatnot you can check this post out https://www.tumblr.com/velnna/730784859814084608/your-art-is-so-clean-and-nice-could-you-give-some
💬 1 🔁 254 ❤️ 1406 · Your art is so clean and nice, could you give some elaboration on your steps and your workflow? No pressure tho, I'm j
The style I use these days is a lot simpler (usually at most 3 layers) but the logic remains that I first pick a background, then use it to inform the lighting:
Sometimes it takes some adjusting because layer modes (multiply, glow dodge, etc) affect each other and the final tones you see
and somewhere, somewhere the atoms stopped fusing / i'm still your favorite regret / you're still my weapon of choosing
I think it would be funny in Alecto, if we spend more time on the Ninth, for the great aunts to, very affectedly, inform Harrow of her parents' passing during their silent practice to which Harrow barelly even manages to act either surprised or mournful (while Kiriona has a fit of laughter nearby).
"And that makes you, Reverend Daughter Harrowhark Nonagesimus, our 311th Reverend Mother."
Freshly out of Hell and still dazed by whatever happend post tomb opening, Reverend Mother Harrowhark Nonagesimus, can urge no other reaction out of her but a slightly out of breath, shamefully informal "Ok."
Cue a pleathoa of mom jokes that everybody seems to get into.
"Reverend- forgive me Harrowhark, I cannot in good faith look at your face and call you-"
"Then please don't. Thank you, Paul."
"Oh, mother!" ejaculates Ianthe at her every movement.
"Oh, sorry mommy", Kiriona is already begging for it.
Worst things worst she is still, functionally, the last person ever born on the Ninth.
btw harrow made gideon promise to outlive her and return to the locked tomb if anything were to happen to her
btw gideon couldn't keep that promise because she instead kept the promise of "one flesh, one end"
btw harrow was so certain she would die before gideon but gideon just had to put a damper on those plans, like she does with all of harrow's plans
btw gideon was the first (living) person harrow bared her entire soul to, so after gideon died, harrow felt she had Nothing left
I spent ten years building up a following on Tumblr. I had 30k+ followers, great engagement, it helped my career thrive like nothing else. I could quit my day job and live off the fan base I’d accrued.
Then, their policies changed. Half my work was no longer allowed. People left the site in droves. I left too, for awhile. I came back to a ghost town. I still have 25k followers, but I don’t think more than 10% are active anymore. I’m followed by ghosts. Same with DeviantArt, although I was never quite as big there, and I’ve been gone so much longer.
This disallowed half of my work was never allowed on Facebook in the first place, or Instagram, but their algorithms are such that my stuff rarely makes it to anyone’s feeds, and if I post a link to where people could actually pay me for my content, it’s hidden unless I pay for it. Patreon swept my work away to a dark corner where no one could see it unless I personally guided them there. Twitch is so strict you can’t even show bare feet. The death of Google Reader means nobody follows RSS feeds anymore, so I can’t direct people to my own site.
So there’s Twitter I guess, where I can post whatever I want, but again, algorithms. But more than that, I don’t have the energy to build up a following once again on a site I don’t own that can delete my career on a whim. The thought of spending time jumping around through hoops for attention just to have it taken away again has stripped any motivation I had to try.
The internet has been gentrified. All the small cute houses and mom & pop shops have been shut down and replaced by big corporations that control everything. I’ve been making webcomics for twenty years, and at the start, the internet was a beautiful wild place. Everyone had a home page. It was like having a house and people came to visit you and you would visit other people in their houses. Now, we don’t visit each other in personal spaces anymore. It’s like we have to visit each other in the aisles of a megamart. Everything is clean and sanitized and the weirdos who made the internet what it was are no longer welcome. No space for freaks anymore.
People still ask me for advice on how to break into comics, and I don’t have any wisdom because I don’t recognize the internet anymore. I don’t feel comfortable working within its boundaries which seems to be getting smaller and smaller and smaller. None of the tools I used when I started exist anymore. They’ve been replaced by things I don’t know how to use. I don’t think I could break into comics today. 2002 had so few barriers compared to now. You might have started on Keenspace, but you could reach a point where you could break away to your own site and people would go to it. Now, you start on Webtoon or Patreon and I guess you just stay there? It feels so much like owning a hardware store for years and then having to go work as a cashier at the Home Depot that put you out of business. I’m looking at my career trajectory and it all points to being a Wal-Mart greeter with uncontrolled arthritis.
I don’t want to make “content,” I want to make comics, I want to make art, and I want to do it in a space that is mine. I’m not sure there’s a place for that anymore.
I don’t have the energy to build up a following once again on a site I don’t own that can delete my career on a whim.

It's a dumb griddlehark romcom
Are you a Locked Tomb fan? Do you struggle to describe the series to friends and family who dislike science fiction and fantasy, and prefer the kind of novels The New Yorker describes as "a blistering exploration of the human condition" and the odd tasteful murder mystery? Don't worry, I've got you covered:
1. Stranded in a decaying pile, a group of aristocrats and their servants contend with political intrigues, transgressive relationships, and existential questions while stalked by an unknown killer.
2. A teenage girl, struggling with memory loss after a terrible accident, is groomed by a charismatic religious leader at his isolated compound. As she tries to avoid confronting her past, the lines between reality and fantasy seem to blur.
3. A young girl with learning difficulties finds joy with her found family amidst the horrors of a refugee camp. A climate scientist confesses how he came to commit murder. Their parallel narratives with come to overlap explosively.

The fact this isn't a painting is a testament to one of the greatest feats of set design and production I've ever seen.
My god just look at this! The lighting, set design, photography... I've just never seen anything like it.
I think this is the first time I've ever been wowed by "this ISN'T a painting"!
Hi um... so I've been drawing fanart for my girlfriends fanfiction, and she's bullied me into posting it here finally.
This is for chapter 6 if you're interested in reading a cheesy romcom ❤️

oh god i’d heard about the “i won’t commission artists who undercharge for their art” post and now it’s making its rounds on my dash.
please understand that this concept does not actually help anyone. the sensible thing to do if an artist is undercharging is to tip them for what you think their work it worth, and be sure to let them know that. even if this doesn’t cause them to actually change their base prices, at least YOU’RE paying for what it’s worth, and THEY’RE getting business instead of nothing.
by essentially boycotting artists who are already unsure of the value of their own work (and are thus underpricing) you’re not sending any positive message. no one is going to up their commission prices when nobody is buying them. the only thing the artist gets out of it is that people don’t want to buy their art for some reason, and people who’s products aren’t selling aren’t going to say “oh i guess it was because i wasn’t charging enough, i’ll pump up the prices!”
if you want to support a commission artist, please do it by actually SUPPORTING THEM WITH COMMISSIONS rather than by choosing to take your business elsewhere because their prices were too low.
can we stop promoting the idea that nature has to look beautiful to be good?
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (2024)
the funniest part is that i had to change only two words
guys it turns out if you wanna have fun and be a fun and interesting person you like have to fill your day with fun things and not just rotting in your room …… need a moment to process
I NEED y'all to understand that "rotting in your room" is not something to be ashamed of, and it does not mean you are a boring loser with nothing to offer the world.
If you've stopped engaging in fun/meaningful activities, feel depressed, anxious, "wired but tired", immobilized, dissociated, or are otherwise unable to motivate yourself to get anything done right now, this is not your fault. You're stuck in a freeze response/dorsal vagal shutdown, which simply means that your nervous system is deeply dysregulated.
Our nervous system's can become dysregulated for many reasons, but primarily this results from being in a hyper-active fight or flight response, aka dealing with chronic stress, without a full recovery.
If this sounds like you, please know you are not broken, you are overwhelmed. Your mind-body system has taken on too much, for too long. If you've experienced trauma, illness, oppression, or, honestly, have just been trying to survive the chaos of the past few years, your nervous system is going to be extra sensitive. Your body is preserving its energy to protect itself.
At the end of the day, your nervous system has to feel safe and properly resourced before you try to fill your days with activity again. Simply needing to rest and recharge is not shameful. Forcing yourself to "just do more" from an empty tank will only create more stress for your system, which further perpetuates the cycle of chronic stress ---> burnout. Please live life at a pace that is manageable for you. You have time to feel fully alive again, I promise.
