They find Merlyn hard at work in a room near their lab, on some kind of machine which seemed to be taking up the entire space...

She looks up and smiles brightly when she sees Astatine.

"Enaid! Hi!"

"Oh." Mer hums a little and runs her fingers through Xon's hair. "That's a good point, Enaid. It could absolutely be the influence of another party... But who? And why?" - @union-of-mad-scientists

[Her hair is... damp. Mer's hand comes away with ink on it, until Xon coughs and the ink is gone.] I think, er, I might have a hunch? It's kind of metatextual knowledge, though, so if you want me to not say it that's fine.

Mer looks at their hand, frowning slightly.

"Hmm... go ahead and say, I certainly haven't got any idea."

Okay, uh... so, you know how you're a unified singular person and shit? For the most part at least? To your knowledge?

Well, for some ungodly reason I got... kind of split across two people. Or rather my metatether's insert is split across two people, which apparently was realized as some really weird in-canon stuff - it's probably why I'm unable to interact with people in the first place, honestly. I bet this is my... I guess other half? My other half sounds like I'm married to her, though. It's potentially the other side of my tether's insert doing this.

"Ah." They nod. "That would explain both how And why," she says. "What's her name?"

Noxie. Or Nox, I think, which is just... supremely uninspired.

"Why?" they think for a moment, "Ohhhhh, because it's Xon backwards...."

They nod once.

"Alright, how would we find her then?"

[Xon reaches over Mer's shoulder, into a portal that looks like torn paper through space, and drags Noxie out from her... room-area-thing.] That work? (HEY!!! Augh, why is my color orange all of a sudden?)

"Probably for contrast and readability," Mer says dryly. "So... Thanks for helping us out, I guess, are you interested in making this work even better?"

Er, uh, I don't know what you're talking about! [Xon bonks Noxie from her being-hugged position on Mer, which Astatine snorts at.] AGh, okay, yeah, I'd like to help.

(It's because of technical limitations, I think. And boy howdy is this gonna be annoying to deal with from a writing standpoint.)

From there the four people begin to converse animatedly about the technology being used, how Noxie had affected it, and what other things might be done to make the metachamber better, and what sort of capabilities might be expected from a more portable device. Mer does eventually have to let Xon go so they can work, but she makes sure to give Astatine a good hug too, so they don't feel left out.

A few hours in and they have working plans and a few additional prototypes going.

[Noxie had, apparently, just modified the narrative for it to work - but a little brainstorming with Xon led to the two working together to write a more feasible reason into being; utilizing a bit of Astatine's dimensional tech - from their sword - Xon's body could be superimposed into the third dimension, and controlled as normal.]

[Currently, she's got one of the prototypes harnessed onto her chest in the Metachamber.] Is that alright? I'm not sure how much you want me to do with regards to this, uh... thing. [She pokes at it.] Bit bulky.

"Hmm?" Mer looks up from where she'd been working on a slightly different model. "Right, yeah, so. It works, right? We're most worried about the tech right now, ergonomics and balance and design can all wait for later. So... Try walking around and doing normal sorts of activities, I guess? See if you can leave the Metachamber and still be at least kinda solid?"

Got it. [Xon tentatively walks out of the chamber. Her form goes a little bit fuzzy around the edges, but she's able to just about barely pick up and toss a nearby ball at Noxie's head.] (Hey! Ow! ...oh, I'm back to yellow!) Yeah, this works I think. It isn't full stabilization, but I probably can't walk through walls.

"Brilliant!" she chuckles a little. "Full stabilization is overrated anyways. What's important is you aren't trapped in intangibility. Alright, we should probably do similar tests with at least some of these others... Seeing if any are more effective, or if any feel better to wear, things like that."

Right. [Xon makes grabbyhands at the one Astatine had been working on, then trods back into the Metachamber to test it out.]

[Offhanded] You know, it might be worth looking into making this sort of tech fit into my eye sockets. Or making use of the spare space in my chest cavity? I'm not using it for anything, and I'm not your average human, so, y'know, might as well.

"Not bad ideas, but we'll want to be as satisfied with the build as possible first," she says, "Installations in those areas aren't going to be easy to service or upgrade, you see."

Hm. Do you think it would be possible to shape or toggle the field generator? Selective intangibility in conjunction with planar transferral would allow for easy removal and servicing of the implants.

That'd be a pretty far-off thing for right now... but I guess it might effect the specifications? I dunno.

"I can't see why it wouldn't be possible," Mer says, "It's just a matter of having a way to adjust how much power is going to which parts..."

"Oh dear..." They frown slightly. "Come back in and let me take a look at that while you try the next one?" they put aside the ting they'd been tinkering with again. "We can learn just as much from failure as from success, if not more."

Yeah, yeah, of course. [She hops back in the Metachamber, as Noxie shfufles closer to Mer.] Hey, uh... what's the deal with all the varying kinds of reactions? Shouldn't the tech be identical?

"No?" Mer blinks. "What would be the fun in that? They have different power levels and frequencies and things, and a few of them have different base mechanisms that just function on the same principles. One I just reversed the polarity of just to see what happened."

Oh, huh. I figured that you'd be mostly just... figuring out what worked, and then continuing to make that design better. [Xon snorts.] Ready for you to take a look, Mer.
