Amandla Stenberg accepts the Young Gifted and Black Award at Black Girls Rock
Black women endure constant scrutiny within activist circles and âthe movementâ, while simultaneously providing most of the work fueling that activism. Yet only through martyrdom are Black women ârespectedâ and âlovedâ, even then resulting in the loss of their humanity. They morph into hollow, almost saintly figures, a collection of contextless quotes and ideas rabidly consumed, co-opted and weaponized. If they cannot be easily reduced to bite sized ideology, they are disappeared from their intellectual labor and productions.
We need to stop saying âwomanâ and âfemale leadâ when we mean âwhite womanâ and âwhite female leadâ because both whiteness and the absence of women of color in media need to stop being the default.
Poet Taylor Steele captures the problem with appropriating Black slang.
In her poem âAAVEâ (which stands for African-American Vernacular English) Taylor Steele explains why appropriation of Black slang is the worst. African-American culture is being popularized on a daily basis and while Black people are judged and mistreated for using something they came up with ages ago, White people come off as cool and original when they use it.

romantic love isnât everything. love comes in many forms. when he bought you coffee. when she complimented your outfit. platonic love is just as good. friend love is good love too.
When the minimum wage in Haiti was raised to 61 cents an hour, Hillary Clintonâs State Department intervened on behalf of American garment manufacturers and had it cut in half again, to 31 cents.
Hillary Clinton is a war criminal and has no regard for human rights.
Demand accountability for all politicians for inhumane actions against the âthird worldâ. As a haitian I have a strong dislike for the Clinton family, but donât single out our pain when you just want to use it as a quick jab at a politician. This entire operation was continued from the Bush administration then carried on by Obama.
what would you think of a woman who addressed a club meeting of men by telling them how charming, how well gowned, how pretty, they were?
This is why I really like books that are set in oldey times with people who have views like this, and why it annoys me when people say but thatâs not historically accurate
tbh, half the time ânot historically accurateâ is code for âi wish things were still like my imaginary version of 19th century England only minus the choleraâ
This just makes me absurdly happy, especially because itâs written by a man calling out other men for this shit.
âBut they didnât know betterâ you sure about that?
dude was so mad about this he was snarking in all caps
Four for you, John!
itâs back!
