It's been just over a year since Deltarune chapters 3 & 4 released! I did the 3D work, which mostly means Tenna 📺 I figured it's been long enough to share some "behind the scenes" stuff, starting with a look at the Maya file for his static poses...
I'd individually render the poses to get that early 3D shine ✨ Here's some of them at their original resolutions! I would work from text descriptions from Toby, and sometimes there'd be a Paint sketch to help out. Gigi drew the concept that I modeled from and some poses too!
I had a lot of fun pushing myself to match the dynamic poses Toby had in mind for Tenna - making him so crazy and expressive was something I couldn't have done without his prompts. He'd draw the faces on afterward too, which really brought Tenna to life!
(lots more after the Read More cut...!)
Here are some of the Paint sketches Toby drew to help me with specific Tenna poses! I love seeing his drawings LOL, genuinely really good and evocative 👍
There was a time when I was struggling to capture what he wanted for these specific Tenna poses… Until Toby acted them out himself, and I thought, "Ah, it's like that. I understand." and then I was able to make them just how he pictured them.
When looking through the renders and choosing what to share, I laughed at these two… Remember when Tenna had a gun? Remember when he bent over in a very specific way that might remind you of another, different image? No? Maybe you don't…? Well. Don't worry about it.
These ones are cute… Tenna is pretty cute sometimes! Has anyone ever thought this? Actually, before people knew he was going to be a strange 3D sprite the Whole Time, I was worried people wouldn't like the style and it'd sour people's views on him. I'm glad that didn't happen.
Toby thought it would be funny to have Tenna do some really smooth, mocapped animations sometimes - specifically free to use ones that often pop up in other things. An extra funny part to me is how many frames these take up in the game, and how his tails are stuck to his legs…
Speaking of mocap, Toby wanted Tenna to use custom mocap animations as far back as 2016 - Ten(na) years ago! I got an Xbox Kinect at the time and learnt how to set this up, but then never used it. Here's a look at messing with mocaped stuff again in 2022. So Normal.
Don't bother trying to help him here, he's just being dramatic 🙄
I particularly like these poses - I think I improvised most of these just based off the context they get used in… I always liked posing his tie and coat tails as if they were also parts of his body he could move. Which I guess they are?
After I rendered out the individual poses in high quality, I'd force the color palette to be limited to just a few shades and then I'd shrink the result down to pixel sized sprites. Like these! I'd tidy them up a little, but they'd really get improved on at the pixel scale by Clairvoire.
As well as Tenna's sprites, I also worked on his intro "movie"…! Seeing people be completely overloaded by this on first playthroughs would always make me laugh. In game, there's a ton of extra editing done by Everdraed, but my unedited cut looks like this ⬇️
This was the entire storyboard I had to work from, and I'm realizing now that there's the note "put him in car etc" that I never did and actually don't know what it would mean exactly. Working on this had me listen to the accompanying audio many times, but it's good so it's okay.
Here are a bunch of random clips of the Maya project for Tenna's intro movie. This is how movies get made, I think!! Yeah… Just like this.
Say it with him, folks!!
For the 3D Ralsei clip from the intro, Toby really wanted it to look a certain way, and drew more sketches for guiding me with this part than any other. They genuinely helped.
Remember how Toby's original storyboard has the note "covered in slime and shrinks"? That meant I had to learn how to make 3D slime. You can see my tech advancing here.
I'm really happy with how the final Tenna animation at the end of the intro movie turned out! It wouldn't look as good if it wasn't for some 2D animation to reference from SmallBuStudio, so thank you to them for the help! Tenna is cute… Huh, I already said that…?
Phew!! That's a lot of Tenna. I hope it was fun to look through my posts! Oh, one more thing - the Fangamer Mr. Tenna Figurine just straight up uses the 3D model I made, which I think is really funny and cool and nice. Check it out if you want! Thanks for reading!
honestly for me this situation isnt drawing a single bead of sweat first i grab the tiger's jaw with both hands and pry it open, quickly bandaging the wounds i received (didn't hit anything important) and pushing the tiger away while simultaneously falling into my grizzly bear stance and watching as the tiger scurries away with its tail betweens its legs at the sight of my massive shoulder humps. i roar defiantly and catch three dozen salmon at the river
can grief stop hiding in the half smoked cigarettes my impoverished father would've farmed from the cracks in the sidewalk outside of a convenience store? the same half smoked cigarettes that eventually killed him of lung cancer? that he insisted on taking secret puffs of until he literally couldn't breathe anymore? it's an ironically cruel place for a fond memory to be
💬 1 🔁 0 ❤️ 60 · reference post about the "phantom report bug" · this post is not rebloggable because i need to be able to update it and ed
^^^ i spent all night and yesterday compiling information about a "phantom report bug", where people are getting emails from tumblr support about TOS reports they did not file. pjackk was banned off one of these phantom reports, i told tumblr support about it, and now he's unbanned. i think @garaks-padded-bra was also banned erroneously off a phantom report, so hopefully that will get reversed soon as well
PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR PHANTOM REPORT EMAILS. if you spot any, even if theyre old, tell me about them so i can add them to the list (linked above), and report them to tumblr support. POLITELY. tumblr support wants to fix this.
I usually try to review cheeses virginally - that is, ones that I’ve never had before. In this case, this is a cheddar I’ve had many times before. But I couldn’t leave it off the blog, what with its obvious appeal to leather and rubber fetishists.
As far as cheddars go, Grafton’s 2-year aged isn’t going to shock you. It’s mild, light on the salt, with a slightly sweet and grassy flavour. It’s got a nice texture. It’s dense, more moist than I expected, and smooth.
So what is the deal with the gummi suit on this cheese anyway? Well, cheese has obviously been around a lot longer than fridges. Fresh cheeses like mozzarella are too moist to last very long outside of a cold place (bacteria and fungi do so love damp places), though I don’t think anyone was too mad about eating that stuff quickly. But cheeses that have been aged (and dried) more have some more preservation options, which is where cheese wax comes in. The wax is a physical barrier, stopping fungal spores from landing, and also blocks moisture and air, making the cheese a pretty unfriendly place to grow. Even drier cheeses can be bandaged in cheesecloth and then slathered in lard to preserve them while allowing some ventilation.
I gotta admit: hot wax isn’t really my thing. But cheesecloth bondage and grease… it has potential.
i completely understand your comments about neurospicy etc being a slur worse than the r word and agree 100% on neurospicy specifically, but i wanted to give an alternative view to neurodivergent bc i know some people use it annoyingly, but it’s worth considering that neurodivergent isn’t supposed and was never meant to refer specially to autism. ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, TBI are all neurodivergent disorders since they cause your brain to wire differently. i, personally, tell people i’m neurodivergent because it’s kinda dangerous to just directly tell people i’m schizophrenic and i’d rather it be attributed to something that doesn’t automatically label me as “demonic evil killer guy” because it is obvious that i’m not “neurotypical” and i don’t want to lie about what i have. not saying your personal experiences with the word aren’t valid!! because i Fucking Get it.. but i thought maybe it’d be nice to hear another perspective on specially the term neurodivergent. if someone uses neurospicy, though, i think it’s legal to kill them on-site
I dislike 'neurodivergent' because I saw it really rise in popularity along with the Divergent YA series (although its etymology dates backwards). I don't want anybody to ever apply that label to me, in the same way I'd never want someone to call me a "Jedi" or "muggle". It comes off as exotifying in the way that a 14 year old in 2010 might consider cool and special.
On the R-slur specifically, I have a lot of thoughts on it as a word and I could ream out essays on the matter. But I was mostly being facetious, I don't have a cognitive or learning disability and can't really "reclaim" it. But I have something going on (especially about auditory processing, maybe autism) and I was in special ed for a little while. It impacted how people saw and treated me for awhile, and that reverberated because it impacted how I interacted with others, etc. So I was on the receiving end of that word a bit more than would a typical kid might.
But even fellow Wokes / SJWs / People Who Give A Shit use slurs like 'dipshit' or 'idiot' as if they're not synonymous with the R-slur. They're the same word! Moron, braindead, idiot, dipshit, etc., it makes no sense that we only elude the R-slur. I'll still follow the norm because I understand shibboleths but I think our norms are not consistent. I'll use the word in full to make a point ("Why are you calling me an idiot? Oooh you want to call me a retard so bad") but that's about it.
It's an inconsistent and hypocritical middleground to avoid just one of equivalent words. Might as well use the R-slur too, or none of them. (This is not getting into the issue of how language is policed on most social media though; eluded phrases like 'the r-slur' in place of the word 'retard' predates online discourse but is increasingly tied into algospeak.)
On schizophrenia specifically, I am with you there 🤝 There is both ASPD and schizophrenia in my family history, which was weaponized in other ways (within my family!!) and are the shining duo of completely misunderstood disorders. This might sound corny but you can consider this a safe space on that regard because I have at least the cursory understanding of schizophrenia (positive and negative symptoms, how it presents, and I don't hold the misconceptions and prejudices others have on it).
On "neurodiverse", I dislike it just because it extends a problem I have with the application of "diverse" for an individual, when "diverse" is a property that a group of people can have. It equivocates "diverse" and "minority". It's possible an individual can contribute to the diversity of a group, but it'd be wrong to call them "diverse". I am okay with referring to a group of people as "neurodiverse" but not an individual.
But regarding a good word to use, I don't really have one. I prefer "neuroatypical", but there is the problem of a word being alienating. I can understand why people might prefer "neurodivergent" for sounding very cool, rather than the more-neutral-but-possibly-negative "neuroatypical".
So, TLDR for my preferences personally, neuroatypical >> neurodiverse > neurodivergent >> neurospicy.
In practice, I don't care too much what words people use, but "neurospicy" is a small indicator that I probably won't vibe with that person.
