Beirut-IX participates in the 27th Euro-IX Forum

Beirut-IX was invited by Euro-IX to share experience at the 27th Euro-IX Forum in Berlin on October 27 2015. This participation allowed Beirut-IX to look at other Internet exchanges models and best practices around the world. Participating in the Euro-IX Forum was an eye-opener, allowing to meet subject-matter experts, explore business models used by exchanges around Europe and the world (all the way from San Francisco). It was also a great opportunity to network, and learn new tools to manage exchanges (like IXP Manager, BIRD, and others).

The sessions were both technical and strategic. Attending the General Assembly, the elections and budget discussions was also very enlightening as to managing a network of IXPs.

Nicolas Rouhana, Beirut-IX spokesperson, delivered a presentation regarding the challenges of peering in Lebanon, which showed the audience the disparate types of operations & sets of challenges of Internet exchanges between developing and developed countries.

Beirut-IX will surely be engaging more with Euro-IX network moving forward, like inviting experts to visit BeirutIX and conduct a workshop locally, or sending staff for internship in other IXs, and why not hosting a future Euro-IX Forum in Beirut.

iCal sync with Exchange

Clear Calendar Cache:

1. Go to system preferences and open Internet accounts. Select the Exchange account and turn off calendar. (go ahead & create it if not already)

2. Close iCal and any other calendar application you might have running

4. Restart iCal, which will rebuild the caches

5. Turn on your Exchange calendar

Stopping the "CalendarAgent" process in the ActivityMonitor might be necessary before being able to empty the Calendar cache files from the trash.

BeirutIX installs Google Global Cache (GGC) Servers to improve Internet experience for local users

BeirutIX partnered with Google for setting up Google Global Cache (GGC) Servers in its premises to improve the Internet experience for the local members’ subscribers. Google provided the servers and the expertise to BeirutIX along with the software technology for caching.

What exactly are GGC servers and what is their significance?

Google Global Cache (GGC) represents the final tier of Google’s content delivery platform and acts as an intermediary between an Internet user and Google’s data center. With GGC, network operators and Internet Service Providers access a small number of Google servers in BeirutIX to serve popular Google content, including YouTube. Google’s traffic management system directs users to the node that will provide the best performance for the user.

GGC deployment reduces the number of route miles travelled on an operator’s network to serve Google traffic through the cached content rather than having to be routed all the way to Google’s data center, further reducing the latency and improving the experience to the end user.

Since around 30 to 40% of the total Internet traffic of an ISP towards Google, hence installation of GGC servers in BeirutIX network will provide a better browsing experience to the users and also reduce the congestion on international links at various levels.

The GGC has pointed out a significant jump from 80Mb to 8,000 Mb of local traffic among the peers.
