accomplishments: watching captain america: the winter soldier three times. tricking my friends into seeing snowpiercer with me. buying a really cute floral dress and getting lots of compliments on it.

failures: uh, a complete loss of overall motivation and inability to face any of the work still ahead of me.

UEFA: no to racism and a giant maybe to homophobia. I wrote some pieces for Brazilian websites on that issue, telling the story of Queerpass Bayern and etc. 99% of the feedback I received was “but it’s just a joke, people are ruining football”. :/

man, that is just about the most upsetting thing. not that it's surprising -- it's really, really not, but it's easy for us to sort of live in this bubble of most bayern/bundesliga fans are like this and to break out of that bubble is...jfc, it's so discouraging.

Those fans are permanently banned from the arena. Bayern has a zero tolerance policy re: homophobia.

UEFA is just like....well yeah I guess....we should do something about it....but not....talk about it or address it directly????

you know what's just so fucking infuriating

so, today, there was a whole block of seats in the allianz arena empty as penalty because a few fans brought in a homophobic sign into the arsenal vs. bayern match.

the opinion of the fans who brought in that banner are not, it should be noted, of the club at all and we have the interviews and press releases to prove it but that's not really the point.

the point is, the area was blocked off as penalty due to a homophobic sign. and what it was blocked off with was three giant SAY NO TO RACISM signs, the trademark of UEFA's classic "no really we're the good guys" campaign.

now, UEFA's complete and utter inability to actually say no to racism is perhaps a different conversation for another day, but...

the sign in particular was directed at mesut özil. i have no doubt that racist slurs have been directed at mesut throughout his career, as gross and skin-crawl inducing as that thought is. but in this penalty, refusing to acknowledge that there are intersections between racism and homophobia was a major, major failing.

but what can we expect, really. it is UEFA, after all.
