There's nothing like playing those games for the first time, the experience is truly magical. Sadly, playing either of them again isn't nearly as rewarding, as the main appeal is exploration. And I've already seen everything now.

alright everyone gather round it’s fuckin story time

so background: i’m 18 and in my first year of college. i’m not a music major, but i have been studying music since i was literally eight years old. i know my shit. for my honors music class, we have to identify musical elements in songs from genres of our choice. i, like the trash i am, chose kpop. please note that i am an exo stan, a vixx fan, and a casual fan of mamamoo and bts.

so when we listened to exo’s lotto we found:

ornamentation

polytextuality

polyphony (multiple melodies at once)

major key

ostenatos

duple meter (it was in 4/4)

melisma

it didn’t change key

or tempo (constant 100 bpm)

almost always either one singer or unison singers

tl;dr it’s a basic ass pop dance song, typical of exo and typical of sm

when we listened to mamamoo’s piano man we found:

ritardando

rubato

duple meter (also 4/4)

sounds jazzy but only because of background ornamentation, doesn’t actually have a jazz groove

major key

melisma

tempo change in beginning

112 bpm

homophony (multiple people singing the same thing on different notes) and polytextuality

basically this is if a classically trained orchestral musician tried to play jazz it’s super metered and rigid, not actual jazz

when we listened to bts’s not today we found:

duple meter (still 4/4)

polytextuality and polyphony at end which just means a ton of shit is happening at the same time

ostenato aka one line on repeat the entire time (it’s in the bass)

repetitive as all hell

this is literally just another basic ass promotion dance song, nothing special

when we listened to vixx’s fantasy we found:

beethoven’s moonlight sonata movement 1 except the tempo is doubled to 76

because instead of this piece being metered ¾ like the original sonata

fantasy goes from 9/8 to 5/8 and back and forth

they literally put a triple meter inside a duple meter

it’s in minor

melisma and ornamentation all over the place

violin riffs through the roof

switches between unison and homophony constantly

ad libs for days

so sit the fuck down with your bts is better than vixx shit. we went through all of bts’s discography trying to find a song that had enough musical elements that we could use it. lemme tell you, there wasn’t one. it’s all either 4/4 pop dance beats with no contextualization (aka there’s bass but nothing happens) or slow and sappy but still no contextualization (aka it sounds like it has a lot of musicality but it doesn’t). when we did the same thing with vixx? boom. error. eternity. dynamite. spider. chained up. hyde. for all the praise bts gets for writing and producing their own stuff, vixx is still more musical than bts could ever hope to be, and i’m saying this from as objective a standpoint as possible.

i honestly enjoy bts’s music. it’s catchy and fun and it’s good for walking home or studying when i’m not motivated. but to say that any part of bts has more musicality than vixx is a downright lie.

now i know that this post was about vocals, so let me remind you of this too. leo or ken alone could outsing the entirety of bts. from a technical standpoint, leo and ken are just stronger singers, and part of that is because they’ve had leading roles in musicals. i love jin to pieces, but he doesn’t have the training to support his voice, same with jimin. taehyung’s voice is much more easily supported because it’s lower, but he doesn’t have the technical abilities that ken does even in his low range. jungkook is definitely the strongest singer out of the bunch, but the kid is still facing puberty-created changes to his voice. when he actually sings (ie. in his covers or Butterfly), he’s very breathy, which means that he isn’t breathing fully and is probably not trained in how to safely control his volume. it also means that he isn’t trained in his falsetto/head voice, which is where a lot of these songs seem to put him since his vocal break seems to be right in the middle of that range. jin and jimin also suffer from this issue, taehyung not so much because of the timbre of his voice (his issue is moreso with pronunciation). now, leo has a high voice, and ken is pretty up there too, but you would never see this issue from either of them, because they’re older and have spent more time on training these issues out. the bts vocalists can definitely reach that level someday, but they aren’t even close right now.

so in conclusion, jungkook is in no way a better vocalist than probably anyone in vixx, especially their main vocalists, bts is in no way more musical than vixx, and everyone please have a nice day. tea is served.

♠️What is Asexuality?♠️

An Asexual is a person who rarely or never experiences sexual attraction. They are not drawn to people sexually and do not feel compelled to act on attraction to others in a sexual way. Asexuality does not preclude you from experiencing other types of attraction (including romantic attraction) to people of the same or different gender to yourself, or define whether you want to be in a committed relationship.

💜Why is awareness important? 💜

An absence of attraction is much harder to define than a presence; and lack of awareness means many people have no idea that there are words to describe their experiences or others who feel the same. While the term has been in common use since the 1960s, many people are well over the age of 25 when they first hear the word - especially if they experience romantic attraction to the opposite gender and haven’t had much exposure to the broader LGBTIQAP+ community. When you’re told all of your life that romantic feelings about someone are inextricably linked to sexual attraction it can be confusing when your experiences don’t seem to match. It can also be hard to tell what is hyperbole and what are thoughts that allosexual (the opposite of asexual) people have the intention of doing?

There is are strong social and cultural messages which use the development of sexual thoughts, sexual relationships and having children as markers of age and maturity. It can be difficult to express a lack of sexual desire without being invalidated or challenged by the people around you or your own built in expectation that sex is fundamental to being human. Are you medically or psychologically unwell? Are you repressed? Broken? Prudish? A late bloomer? Will this “all make sense” when I meet “the right person”?

While most identities on the LGBTIQAP+ spectrum are becoming better protected from medicalisation and psychiatric diagnosis - Asexuality has a long way to go.

It is still very common for people who are questioning or on the Asexuality spectrum to be offered medical testing and treatment aimed at curing their Asexuality. Most GPs still routinely recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, assessment for depression or other mental illnesses, recommend counselling or prescribe medication to boost libido.

♠️Celibacy Vs Asexuality♠️

Celibacy is like being on a diet. You still want to have sex and have sexual thoughts about others but are choosing not to act on them at that time. Whether it’s based on your beliefs or availability of a suitable partner varies but that desire is still present even if intentionally suppressed.

Asexuality is like not experiencing hunger because you’re already eaten enough. You don’t have sexual thoughts about others or feel compelled to act on them.

💜Attraction Vs Libido💜

Libido is typically the amount that you think about sex and how much you want to engage in sexual activities either partnered or solo. Libido is on a spectrum for people of all sexual orientations. They normally range from high to low. Libido can fluctuate and change over the lifespan and it can be influenced by hormone levels as well as some medications.

Attraction is usually whether your libido is directed at a particular person or type of person. Attraction can also be seen as the extent to which you want to act on sexual thoughts about a particular person.

Asexual people can and do experience a range of libidos from high to low. However they do not experience attraction, therefore are less likely to feel compelled to act on it and rarely associate it with a specific person.

♠️Attitudes towards Sex♠️

Asexuality is a wide spectrum, individual wants and needs vary but all are valid and normal.

In broad terms: Some asexuals are sex positive, they may not experience hunger but still get pleasure out of sharing a meal with someone. Some asexuals are ambivalent towards sex, it’s something they can take or leave. Some asexuals are completely or partially repelled by the idea of personally participating in sexual activity with a partner.
