V/A - ISRAFEL 12" (1997, Ape/USA)

We had a band while we lived in Athens called Architects Of The New Christ Rebellion. I don’t remember how we got asked to be on this. Somewhere along the way, we met Greg Ape. Maybe at the Michigan Fest we played? We only played a few shows and did a short 1 or 2 week Midwest tour with The Party Of Helicopters when they had only but a tape out. We toured in my Geo Metro and Mike’s Volvo. Architects did one recording with Jeff, about five songs and this is the only thing released from it. We did do one other recording (just one song) in Kent with Jamie Stillman (Donut Friends, POH, HTS, etc) for some other comp that never happened and it sounded great, but I don't know what happened to it. This band is what happens when you listen to too much Neurosis, Union Of Uranus and Honeywell. The band that came out of Architects was Sequoia, who sounded similar but were more on the metal side of things. I don’t think Sequoia ever toured, we just did a few shows in Athens and Columbus. That band also did a recording, but didn’t release any of it. Actually, I don’t know if it was ever finished. Sequoia had Chris instead of Mike on bass and Jeff instead of Richard on drums.

V/A - THE FORTY-NINTH PARALLEL 12" (1996/1997, Disillusion/USA, Lake Erie Hi-Fi/USA,Old Glory/USA, Do Not Consume/Malaysia)

This originally came out as a CD from Disillusion and Lake Erie Hi-Fi with similar looking packaging. And then one day I noticed this came out on vinyl from Old Glory. It was an interesting surprise. By that point, Kevin Sabarese (sp) had already conspicuously disappeared from DIY hardcore and was no longer running Old Glory. I would have been more excited if he was still doing the label. Nothing against whoever took over, I just didn’t know that person or anything about him. And upon looking at the Discogs page for this release just now, I learned that this comp was also released on CD in Malaysia. Our song was a nice, remixed version of Right Angle Handcuffs from the Coleman split session and re-named Right Angle Restraint. I think this version sounds much better. Jeff did a great job remixing it. Jeff also recorded the Inept tracks on this.

Pressing info: 1000 of the original CD version. No idea about the vinyl version or the Malaysian CD release. Booklet included.

V/A - AMNESIA 12" (1996, Ebullition/USA)

Indescribable Velocity from the demo, is the first song on this: the song about Matt falling off a parking garage to evade a security guard with a gun pointed at him and breaking his back. There is a big influence from the NEUROSIS - Word Is Law album in that song. We were asked to be on a comp for Ebullition after Kent saw us play the “Day After” show in Columbus, after the 2nd “More Than Music Fest” in Dayton (1994). We were big fans of the early Ebullition years and what the label stood for, so it was pretty cool to be asked. By the time this came out, Ebullition was on its way to becoming something else and Kent was going through some sort of existential crisis with the label and probably a lot of other things. Pictured is the Magic Card that came with my copy.

Not sure how many were pressed, but apparently there were 102 on red vinyl. Comes with a foldout cover and booklet.

CRUCIFIXION OF COLEMAN 12" (1995, Mountain/USA)

We played Long Island on our first disaster of a tour (‘94) and Chris Jensen (Mountain Recs), who set up the show for us, could not let us stay at his place, our next show was in Boston, so he called his friend up and his friend (and room mates) were nice enough to open their apartment for us to show up ass crack early in the morning after driving all night through a blizzard. That friend was Jackie from Coleman. We all hit it off with her and this started our love affair with all things Coleman. I am not sure how many shows we played with them, but even after all this time, they are one of the most intense and terrifying bands I have ever seen perform. I even had to walk out, mid-set, a couple times. They are all wonderful individuals and here is the piece of paper and plastic to memorialize that point in time in all our lives.

The Coleman side is captured perfection by the great Bill T. Miller, while our side is pretty fucked up sounding. Not really in the best way, but it is what it is. We recorded it in 1995 in the Ohio University T-Com studio with Jeff Lewis on ADAT (!), which is basically VHS tapes. Jeff did a good job considering that he was just learning how to record bands. It was recorded for free as a project for one of his classes, and I can’t remember why, but we had to sneak in at midnight a few times to finish it up. Maybe we only had an allotted amount of time? There's a really great demo session of some of these songs that Jamie Stillman recorded on his 8 track cassette recorder, I would like to know if anyone has a copy of it. I remember Good Neighbor sounded really heavy.

Our side of the cover was designed by Matt, the mass of bicycle parts is from a photo of the Heidelberg Project in Detroit and the photo of the trash can with the chain came from….the trash. I think Alex found that in an OSU dumpster. I assume a photography student’s discarded homework assignment.

Three Studies is mostly known for this record and the Harriet The Spy split 7" and unfortunately our 12" was not completed because I believe that would have represented us best, it was recorded in the same session as our songs for the Melt Banana split 8".

The Coleman side of the CRUCIFIXION OF COLEMAN split 12" label art. Jackie’s write up says it all. I fell asleep on an ant hill and woke up with them crawling all over me, meanwhile, Mondo is sweating and sleeping in some random tool shed he found (it was a hot summer day). Yannick says peace and hitch hikes back home. We couldn’t even get a hotel room because the reservations person didn’t know what kind of sick, twisted crap we were into, we were all dirty and Jackie had bruises and scratches all over her face with a big group a guys. If I remember correctly, Richard slept through the whole thing, in the loft in the van while it was at the garage up on a lift, being worked on. Good old Belleville, Ontario, I won’t miss you.

Creepy ass barn we used for the label art on our side of the CRUCIFIXION OF COLEMAN split 12". This barn was out on 676, on the way to Richard’s (bass) parents’ house at the time. I drove by this barn not too long ago and it’s just a white barn now. Not sure If I am sad about that or not.

V/A EDUCATION COMPILATION 12" (1995, Mountain/USA)

To Some Degree, from the Three Studies For A Crucifixion demo tape, was recorded for this. It’s funny that we ended being asked to do this because Chris Jensen (who then was the one who ran the record label) really didn’t like us when we first played with his band, Half Man, in Columbus. It was a fun show in a basement on W. 9th Ave (I think), also with Kisses And Hugs, Jara and Still Life. We ended up becoming friends and seeing each other much more, not sure what eventually changed his mind about Three Studies. Of course, he also released the Three Studies split 12" with Coleman later on. This was the first piece of vinyl that I had music released on, even though Indescribable Velocity was recorded for an Ebullition comp first. The Coleman song is from their first demo recording, which to my knowledge, they didn’t release and wouldn’t even copy for anyone (except one person). They also recorded a second demo, which sounds much better, they didn’t release that one either, but they did at least give some copies to friends, I still have mine. It is mostly, if not all, the same songs as what they recorded for the Three Studies split. It was a good choice to record again, because even though that second demo is amazing, their third recording got even better. It is more raw and has more energy without compromising the high quality sound of a Bill T. Miller recording.

THREE STUDIES FOR A CRUCIFIXION - demo CS 
(1994, self released)

Annoyingly dubbed one by one by us on our home stereo systems. The booklets and cardboard covers were all made from dumpstered materials. Recorded by the great Smitty. “Velocity” in my parents’ garage, Marietta, OH, 7/26/94, where we used to practice at the time, and the rest in Vienna, WV at Smitty’s house, 10/08/94. Most of these were sold/given away on tour and at shows in Columbus, Ohio. Two of these songs ended up on compilations later on.

There is so much I could say about this band, but basically we were tired of the prevailing fashion and dogma going on in the hardcore scene at the time. We wanted to create something ugly that would make people leave the room when we played. Our first show in Columbus (which was actually our second show) was with Sensefield and as I remember it, we were successful in making most people at a packed Freakin’ Pizza show walk out while we were playing.
