The Hogwarts professors all had a betting pool going on which Black brother James Potter would end up dating. The day Gryffindor lost in their last game of the season to Ravenclaw and Regulus Black ran onto the pitch to comfort James by giving him a very public kiss, McGonagall won a lot of money.

Okay but what if, after enough time passed, Sirius no longer thought of Regulus when he saw things? A book Regulus used to love? Hmm, maybe Moony would like this. A poster of a band Regulus used to listen to every night? He wondered what kind of music they made. The initials R.A.B no longer made him immediately think of his brother, he no longer spent the rest of the day on the verge of tears after seeing something Regulus would have liked. And the guilt he experienced upon realising this hurt far more than the grief of losing his brother.
