NUOVE//CONTEMPORARY ART PRODUCTION is delighted to announce that the artist Sonia Kacem (1985, Geneva, Switzerland) - who has joined our 2018 production program achieving the work “Les Grandes”, is the winner of the 2018 Artisti per Frescobaldi Prize, now in its 4th edition. This year’s winner is been chosen by a highly qualified jury: Hans-Ulrich Obrist (Director of the Serpentine Gallery in London), Elena Filipovic (Director of the Kunsthalle in Basel) and Andrea Viliani (Director of the Madre in Naples). Motivation of the Jury For the use of natural materials connected to the earth, for the personal reinvention of traditional artisanal techniques, for the entropic approach and sensitivity to abstraction that reshape the defined geometries and industrial surfaces of minimalist sculpture, with which the artist appears to explore a counter-matter and develop a counter-form with respect to his own possible sources. For the intelligent precariousness of the material used and the resulting form, as well as for the rigorous processes of conception and manual production, which have led to the creation of works that, even in their future lives, will continue to critically characterize a delicate context – as defined by multiple interconnected factors and extra-artistic knowledge – such as the production of wine, which is the context of the invitation and commission of the Prize. Giving this context – materially, formally, and from the standpoint of the process involved – a concise and hypothetical representation in fieri, able to redefine the experience of the anthropic landscape and the natural ecosystem of the historic estate of CastelGiocondo in Montalcino. With the aforementioned motivations, the Jury awards the Artisti per Frescobaldi Prize (2018 edition) to the artist Sonia Kacem.
The Artisti per Frescobaldi is a biennial prize for contemporary art. Each edition sees three artists compete. Created by Tiziana Frescobaldi in 2012 and curated by Ludovico Pratesi, it is connected to the long-standing patronage of the Frescobaldi family, who have been supporting the greatest artists since the Renaissance. With the prize begins a new chapter in the family’s relationship with art. Ludovico Pratesi and Tiziana Frescobaldi invite three artists to interpret the CastelGiocondo estate. A high-profile jury, made up of three contemporary art museum directors who change with every edition, present the prize to one of the three works. The three artists also design a label for a dedicated, limited and numbered edition of CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino. A portion of the sale proceeds goes towards supporting contemporary Italian art.
