13 Reasons Why - Why I don’t think the producers did a good job raising mental health awareness...
Ok.. So I’ve just finished watching 13 Reason Why, and while I do think it was a good show and brings forward awareness to suicide, I have some mixed feelings about it.
It was very intense show to watch to say the least, and although they give warnings about it not being suitable for younger audiences the show most certainly appeals to teenagers. Not only that, the show is very triggering if you have dealt with rape/depression/suicidal thoughts, and the producers were not responsible with this i.e at the end of the episodes which contained these graphic images there were no helplines for people that may have gone through/been triggered by the series of events.
This show romanticizes revenge suicide and does not touch deeply enough on the mental health aspect of the reason for suicide, as the whole plot is solely based on what other people did to contribute to the reasons why Hannah Baker committed suicide, and it painted the idea that the suicide finally made her loved/like and solved all her problems verses when she was alive everyone ‘hated’ her or treated her badly and she just couldn’t get anything right which can be triggering for someone that is on the edge of being suicidal. Again there was no major link to mental illness being a reason she committed suicide in the first place which was clearly a factor. The most we got in terms of mental health signs were Jessica’s PTSD because of the rape by Bryce, but not much in terms of Hannah Baker, the girl who committed suicide.
I understand what they were trying to do with the show, however I think we can all agree they were not careful enough with how they conveyed the message of suicide and it’s effects and the reasons behind it.
