Last Peds clinical :(

Today was my last peds clinical. tear drop. I loved my peds clinical rotation, I've learned a lot from the nurses and had a fun time caring and playing with my patients. My clinical experience really reminded me why I want to purse a career as a peds nurse. I love working with children and want to help them. It is also a career that I will enjoy. When I think of the saying “If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life” that how I see myself working at a peds nurse!

Chronic Illness & Nursing School

It sucks. 11 months ago I had a cervical spinal decompression surgery for my Chiari Malformation Type 1. It involved shaving down my c1, removing a piece of my occipital bone, and opening and patching my dura. This surgery isn’t designed to cure my malformation, only to make extra room for my brain. There are still days I have to pry myself out of bed with a massive headache, or use all my will to focus during class. Even though it can be tough, it increases my motivation to become a nurse. I want to help others, the way nurses have helped me. I want those who struggle with an “invisible illness” to know that what they are experiencing is real but also that they don’t have to let it define them. They are still free and able to accomplish whatever goals they want too. From the beginning, I decided that i would not let my illness define me and I’m determined to keep it that way !

That was beautifully said P! I always say “theres a reason why i started nursing school, so I’m going to finish what I started”. And I love that you are not letting your illness define you for who you are, instead you’re letting it MOTIVATE you to work harder to become a bomb a$$ nurse! Keep working hard for what you want!

What is sleep..

It is 12:38 pm. 

I have to be up and back at school tomorrow by 8:30 

which means I have to leave at 8 am

which means I have to be up at 7 am to get ready 

which means I have about 6ish hours to sleep

But what am I doing instead of sleep?

Stressing out because I have not started studying my drug cards for a patho quiz that is in 2 weeks.  

I feel like I am loosing my mind

I dont know what sleep is anymore! But it is important we DO get our sleep or we will go NUTS! I’ve started to plan out my day that way I make sure I do everything I need to do and then have some free time to do what I want to do like sleep! I think that following a schedule really helps me out! I saw your post in response to my blog, I’ll send you my study schedule!

Can I just sleep for a living??

So second semester is fully underway and things are getting crazy. There is so much to study for and it honestly feels like there are not enough hours in a day. I cannot take a day off without feeling guilty about not studying, and my brain is exhausted. Waking up in the morning is a struggle when you end up going to bed at 3am everyday. Even when I go to work I take my notes with me and try to get things done, so I feel like once we get our first couple of exams out of the way I’m going to need a mental break. 

On the bright side, I’m really enjoying my med-surg clinical! I thought I would hate it, but I like it a lot more than peds, which could be due to a number of reasons. Lets see how the rest of the semester turns out!

Hi Bianca, I totally agree that there are not enough hours in a day. We just have so much to do and little time to do it. I alway feel the same, I can't take a day off without feeling guilty about not studying. But we all deserve a break from all the work and studying we do. If not we would go crazy! I also like to bring my notes to work as well, so when there is down time I can review my notes and I wouldn't feel as bad!

Graduation is on my mindd

I feel like I blinked my eyes and this semester is over. In just 4 short weeks we will have completed out second semester of nursing school. It almost doesn’t seem real how fast its going. Its frightening yet so exciting that we will be real life nurses so soon!! This semester has for sure pushed me to my limits but it has been so rewarding. I’m trying to be positive in every way possible but sometimes it just feels like the hardest thing to do. Trying to manage school, my own health, friends, family, personal time ect is not an easy thing! Some weeks are easier than others but I just keep reminding myself that in the end it will be all worth it!!

Hi Molly, I can't believe it either that we are almost done our second semester! And I totally agree with you that all of our hard work will pay off, we just have to keep pushing through! And imagine the finish line to getting out degrees, we are going to be awesome nurses, we are going to be able to spend time with out friends and family, and do the fun things we love to do, but in the meantime we will work our butt off to become nurses, there is a reason why we started this. And we are going to finish it.

A little break from exams??

For once we don't have exams coming our way in a couple days or weeks. Which is a nice feeling! But our 3rd exams for patho and med surg will be here before we know it and then after that we will be sitting down to take our HESI finals. It’s scary to think! To help me prepare for all of the exams, I planned out a  a study schedule, to help me stay focus and keep track of studying. I also brought a NCLEX/HESI review book to help me prepare for the upcoming exams. It’s an awesome book, you can use it through out nursing school and it has a couple practice questions. So if you guys would like to see the book or the name of it holla @ ya gurl!

Is sleep an option?

This is the fourth week of spring semester and i must say that i am more tired this semester than i was last semester, I don’t know about you but i feel as though time is slipping away from me. I am trying and cant wait to get the next two semesters over with

I totally agree with you jasmine!! This semester is definitely a lot more challenging with endless exams and all the work load we have, but we got this! We just have to be work hard and think positive! We can always catch up on sleep after graduation! LOL

De-stresss

After yet another sleepless nights and endless studying. I’m glad our patho, med surg and peds exams are over...for that week. After our peds exams. I took a break, as we all should do after taking exams after exams! I like to de-stress and relax by catching up on some sleep, watching a movie on Netflix, do a little pampering. And lets not forget about retail therapy, which I'm sure we are all guilty of! Another way I like to de-stress is by running or working out. I also like to eat Nutella (after a workout)! We all know that nursing school is very stressful, but we need to find our own different ways to lower our stress!

Sleeeepppp Depriveedddd

I got just about ¾ hours of sleep last night… BUT, here I am being a good student, in the library since 10:00 am. We have two exams coming Tuesday/wednesday for Med Surg AND Patho. So, its safe to say I haven’t got much sleep in the last few days. It ok though, once these exams are over I’m sleeping for a week straight (sick I wish)

Hi alyssa! i can totally agree with your post. i didnt get much sleep either...ever since I started the program haha. But I'm glad that the 2 exams are over...now on to the next peds exam! Good luck studying!!!

I can check off patho and med surg exam off my calendar for this week! Now I can finally catch up on some sleep. Just kidding... gotta start studying for  the next peds exam for next week. It’s a never ending cycle. But I always remind myself that, “yeah its hard now, but it will be worth it in the end when I get my nursing degree.” So I just have to keep reminding myself that there was a reason why I started this journey. And I am going to finish it.

I’m proud to say I survived my first semester of nursing school and now onto my second semester! Today is my first day of clinical for peds at CHOP, which I am super excited for! I always knew I wanted to be a nurse, but not just any nurse. I always wanted to be a peds nurse! I have a heart for kids and love working with them. So I'm looking forward to all the opportunities coming my way!

We all know nursing school comes with a lot of stress and anxiety. I know this semester isn’t going to be easy trying to juggle work and school. I’m probably going to have multiple mental break downs. But I know I'm not alone! I have my a great support system, I have my family, friends and my classmates.... and lets not forget, Nutella!!
