just before my last set of the year. i was in the bathroom admiring myself like a libra does when i hear the event host go “where’s yànjú?” lmao

the other day i was really overtaken by anger and frustration because of how often (more often then not) that booking and promoting folks misspell my name on the bill. it got to a point where it felt more like disrespect than an innocent mistake so i told myself to set a boundary. if they can’t get my name right, acccent marks and all, then decline the gig and move on.

fast forward two days. i get an email for an exciting nu show where the person spelled my name correctly and immediately asked for my fees/rates.

this is also the year of nu mediums. i’ve been diligently practicing guitar and working it into my live sets. i want guitar to be my primary accompanying instrument on and off stage so i’ve been putting in my hours. it feels good to return to a stringed instrument after so long.

i am so glad that i finally deleted twitter and am slowly retreating back to this ghost town of an app. it’s crazy how twitter would exacerbate my anxiety and depression yet i’d still be on their scrolling. i’m off that. this year’s all about setting healthy boundaries and breaking counter intuitive habits. nu year saturnian inner g, ya dig?

I’m very excited and honored to announce that I’ll be performing at the last night of IN BETWEEN the first of three experiences that will compromise A MINDFUL DC Summer Sessions: a series of collaborative creative experiences centered around mindfulness, collaboration, and career, including installations, performances, workshops, panels, pop-ups, and gatherings on view from August 16-19th at A Creative DC: Brookland

I will be debuting my live improv set comprised of vocal loops (layered harmonies & syncopated lines), pocket synth (drones & arpeggios) and lead synth (keys, pads & woodwinds) all leading into my new arrangement of “heavenly swells” that I’ve only played once before at the American Art Museum.

Suggested donation is $15 and I will also have merch for sale!
