Masahisa Fukase: Sasuke!! Dear Cat (1979)
before i was born, i was hers. an egg. her body carried me when it was still theory. my start was curled up inside her childhood, her tantrums, her first meals, memories i was present for but not invited into.
the first love is a mother’s milk. the answer to the first question. the first primal need. the first “yes” the body learns to expect. before we learn love, we learn to be fed. and when you’re held in the arms of the person who made you, with milk filling the ache you didn’t yet know was hunger, you learn that love is something that arrives when you are in need.
so the first pain is an appetite that disappears. this is the echo of that oldest contract. we talk about love as something you grow into but really, we are growing out of that first, total dependence. we are still carrying the child who once learned that the world made sense only when someone else’s body made it so. and because the body learned early that hunger makes no sense when she’s not okay, eating feels impossible when the source is not okay.
‘Love is the one thing that we’re capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space.’
