Ok, so Iâve been learning Irish lately, and since I figured other Pagans with Irish ancestry or Celtic practices (or even if youâre not Pagan) might want to learn Irish too, I thought I might just share what Iâve learned each day with my followers and then we could all just learn together.
I think Iâll format the posts something like this: English - Irish (phonetic pronunciation)Â
Iâm going to add a phonetic pronunciation as well because Irish follows different rules than English and I know that can make it harder for some people to learn. (Plus, if youâre wanting to learn chances are youâre going to wish to be able to speak it correctly.)
Also, if anyone following this blog sees Iâve made a mistake then Iâm open to being politely informed so I can correct it, as if Iâm going to be sharing what Iâve learned with others I want to be as correct as possible.
Letâs start with Greetings for today:
Hello â dia dhuit (dee-ah wit)Â Â Â ORÂ Â Â dia daoibh (dee-ah yee-uv)
Literal translation: âDay to youâÂ
dia = âdayâ | dhuit & daoibh =Â âto youâ
âDiaâ can also mean âGodâ
Hello, how are you? - Dia dhuit, conas atĂĄ tĂș? (dee-ah wit, con-as ah-tah too?)
Dia dhuit = âHelloâ | , conas = âhowâ | atĂĄ = âisâ or âareâ | tĂș = âyouâ
I am well â TĂĄ mĂ© go maith. (taw mei guh mah)
TĂĄ mĂ© = âI amâ | go maith = âgoodâ or âwellâ
I am good, and you? - TĂĄ me go maith, agus tĂș? (Tah mei goh mah, ah-gus too?)
TĂĄ mĂ© = âI amâ | go maith = âgoodâ |, agus = âandâ | tĂș = âyouâ
And I thought I might as well throw in this one too:
Hello. Hello to you too. -Â Dia duit. Dia is Muire duit. (dee-ah wit. Dee-ah is mu-ruh wit)Â
Literal translation: âGod be with you. God and Mary be with you.â
Dia = âGodâ | duit = âwith youâ | is =Â âandâ | Muire = âMaryâ
If many of you are interested in following along as I share what Iâve learned, Iâll consider adding a page on my blog just for these posts.
