Dainami's Hand Knit Machine Socks!
Picture Tutorial for Hand Knit Machine Socks!
It’s not too hard! You’ll see! Follow along the pictures! Pull 69 stitches into work,34 to the left of 0 and 35 to the right, and then decide for a 1x1 rib cast on. Both carriages set on T 0 and hang your ribber comb. Now the case on it done. Let knit 20 rows of ribbing both carriages on Tension 5. Easy! Now use your eyelet tool to move all stitches left of 0 to the main bed and all the right to the ribber. Now change the sinker plate to the single bed main one. Use tension 9 and use a contrasting color waste yarn and knit 6-8 rows on the main bed. Now run the carriage across once more to remove all the main bed stitches and the waste yarn off the bed. Fold over as seen in the pictures to create a U shape. Rehang the live stitches that should be easily seen since using the contrasting color waste yarn onto the main bed folded. It’s a little tough but use a weight to help so nothing falls off hooks. Change both bed tensions to 5 and set for Circular knitting, use ribber arm. Change counter to 000. Remember to use enough weight! Decrease one. Lets circular knit 120 rows (60 each bed) That wasn’t so bad :) Now we have a nice ankle all set and now for the Heel. This part is tricky but we can do it. Drop ribber one click and set carriage to normal knitting and switch to normal sinker. Pull out 1x1 using a needle pusher or your hands and set your carriage to hold. Knit across and then take the hold off and knit back. You’re knitting every other needle every other row and knitting all needles as you go back. Do this for 40 rows. This is your heel flap and it’s reinforced. It wears nicely. Now for the heel turn. Counter is not needed for this part. Put your carriage back on hold. Pull out 8 stitches opposite the carriage and knit across, do the same for the other side and knit. Now 8 on each side is in hold. now get a transfer tool, 3 prong, I have a 7 prong so I use that but it isn’t needed. Push all the needles opposite the carriage back into work and then decrease 1 stitch towards the needles into work. Please reference the pictures. Pull the remaining 7 out to hold and do the other side. We want to decrease all 8 from each side onto the working needles. After you’ve decreased all 8 from both side you have completed the turn. So now we have all this hanging down sides and both beds don’t have even stitches. That’s exactly what we want. We have to pick up the sides to fill those 8 stitches in. It will be tight. Now there is still extra on the sides, that’s good. that’s the gusset/decrease. Should be enough for 6 to be rehung for each side of the main bed and 6 each side for the ribber. Sometimes it’s really tight so it’s acceptable to add only 4 or 5 each side as long as it’s even in all 4 spots. It’s still really tight. We want to manually knit the hanging yarn into the needles and then manually knit 1 complete circle to loosen things up and get everything in a knitable state. In hand knitting you would still manually knit one pain row just to get situated. Set everything for circular knitting. Tension 5 and ribber arm and counter to 000. Before you knit. Take your eyelet tool and decrease one stitch from each side ribber bed only. Then knit 2 rows! Then use the eyelet tool to decrease one stitch from each side on the main bed but we want to instead move it down to the ribber in the same end stitch we did before. We always decrease in the ribber. Even main be stitches for this heel. Knit 2 rows. Continue this until both main bed and ribber’s counter strips are 0 next to the decreases. Now you’re back to the original number you started with. Counter has been going the whole time. That number is how many rows you’ve done so far, continue plain circular knitting till 120 rows. You can easily drop the ribber 1 click when you get to 90 and measure from the heel to get your side. it’s easy! So you’ve done the ankle, heel, turn and gusset and foot. Now for the toe! You don’t need the counter any more. Take your 3 prong tool and move 3 stitches across decreasing one. Do this all 4 sides, Main bed left, right, ribber left right. Knit one row only between decreases. Do all 4 every time. Continue until you have 14 total stitches on both beds. Remove with waste yarn and be careful for your feet because of the weights!! Remove them don’t forget! Ouch! Kitchener from the inside of the sock and mattress stitch for the ribbing on ankle Now you’re done with your mostly seamless sock heel flap sock! It looks funny at first but just straighten it out. If there are any holes well we all make mistakes :) But can just weave in a little yarn and it’s not noticeable! The first sock always looks funny till you practice! For a man’s sock you would cast on 79 instead and for the foot I would do 140 but remember always measure! Ask any questions you like on Ravelry I am happy to alter the pattern to help in understanding or to make it easier! I hope this was understandable. I’ve never been good at writing patterns Have fun and relax when doing this Now make your second sock! http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dainamis-hand-knit-machine-sock
