Simon Riley enjoys the quiet, prefers it actually.
After a lifetime drifting from one battlefield to the next, the silence is a haven. Sometimes, however, it’s too quiet. Home alone in his sterile and bare flat a bit out of the ways of any major city, the silence is deafening. His mind is loud with memories of past friends or family and there’s nothing to drown out the sound.
It’s times like these he hates being home from missions. Just waiting for another call, he’d rather be out forcing himself to make more memories that he’ll have to deal with than try and make it through a night reliving the ones he already has. Though, recently, he’s had a saving grace.
During his most recent mission he’s gained a new neighbor. You moved in during his months away and made yourself at home in the practically ancient building in the flat next to his. You have a small habit, he’s noticed, of playing your media out loud. Music, shows, podcast, anything just playing through your phone or tv but loud enough to penetrate the stone walls between the two of you. He had though about complaining at first, sliding you a note under the door or taping it up for you to see. But on nights like this, he’s glad he hasn’t.
It’s hard to get caught up in memories or your thoughts when you have a person rambling in your ear about some new online controversy or an artist dropping an album finally. Most of it isn’t even to his taste but hey, a distraction is a distraction. Sometimes he wonders if that’s why you do it. If your blocking out your own thoughts with the constant noise.
You probably don’t even notice how loud it is. There isn’t really anyone else in the building but the two of you and the landlord so no one else had been around to mention anything either, he supposes. He lets his eyes close in the dark room, allowing the soft sound of some video you’ve left on guide him to sleep for the night.

Your worn sneakers hit the cracked Gotham sidewalk as you make your way down the street. A half full water bottle hangs from your hand as you continue your trek, bundled up in your not quite zipped up jacket with a bleached red hood logo, a gift from a friend, and your jeans rolled to avoid the dirty streets.
The New Jersey air is almost bone-chilling this time of year and the Gotham smog isn't doing it many favors. Though, the only part of your ensemble would raise eyebrows, if anyone even cared, would be the feline at the end of your leash.
The Siberian cat struts along in front of you without a care in the world, not even minding the harness or little booties you put her in anymore to protect her paws from the harsh, sometimes glass-covered concrete. Princess enjoys her walks through the city to let out her energy and she knows she can guilt you into giving her a little treat after the long and harsh adventure, a ten minute walk around the block and back.
You keep walking for a bit before seeing a Pitbull running up to you and Princess causing her to climb up your pants and hoodie onto your shoulders before you can really react. The dog stops in front of the two of you, clearly wanting to play more than anything as it arches with it’s front down but Princess reacts with a sharp hiss due to being startled.
“Dog!” A voice calls out. A large man comes rushing your way holding a leash with a collar still attached. He’s a looming figure with a large frame and dark hair minus a strip of white. His jacket is worn and leather with dark jeans and work boots. The canine perks back up and rushes over to the man and almost trips him as it circles around his feet.
“You should get a harness,” You call out to him, only a few feet away.
“What?” He asks, his voice gruff as he handles the energetic dog to put the collar back on.
“A harness? It’s safer than a collar. Can’t really slip out of it.” You say, petting Princess on your shoulders before she repositions, climbing into the large hood of the jacket to lay down. You zip it up the rest of the way to support her weight but keep your eyes on the man.
“You have a cat,” He comments, a little of the topic but clearly intrigued.
“And?” You ask, raising an eyebrow at him.
“Nothing,” He corrects himself, putting his hand up on faux surrender, “Just... interesting.
“Her name’s Princess,” You tell him finally, her grip still on the leash even as she lazes in your hood. “And yours?”
“This is Dog,” He states, the Pitbull trying to tug as he walks, wanting to get closer to you and Princess, “Got her recently.”
“A rescue?” You ask.
“Something like that. I’m Jason.” He claims, standing up straighter as he changed the subject, his eyes glancing to the bleached design of your jacket. You introduce yourself to him as well and the two of you stand in an awkward silence.
“Well, It’s about time for us to go home. Maybe we’ll run into you again if you start walking her around here,” You comment lightly, starting to continue your walk past him.
“Yeah, maybe.” He adds as you walk away, the two of you parting ways for now as he watches you turn the corner finally.

Papyrus feels guilty. He’s not sure that he’s ever felt this guilty before, and he’s pretty familiar with guilt.
The reason he feels guilty is currently sitting next to him on his bed, leaning into him as they watch some silly show on his laptop that he has long lost the plot to. You, his best friend.
You two had met about a year or two ago, and you’ve gotten really close during that time. So close, that Papyrus has ended up really liking you, in more than just a friendly sense. I mean, how could he not? You’re amazing. You’re patient with him, but you also love to indulge in his teasing and jokes instead of treating him like glass. You freely call him a nerd, but still listen to him whenever he’s fixated on a new story. You don’t judge him whenever he gets anxious over the small things, or frown disapprovingly when he gives in to his vices. You understand him. Not to mention that you get along well with his brother (which, granted, it’s probably harder not to get along with Sans, but still!)
And over the past few months, you two have gotten even closer. It all started with a night where you two spent the night at your apartment, just hanging around each other. He had been having a long week, so he had smoked a little before coming over, which you were fine with. However, at one point the both of you had been laying on your couch together, and he had mindlessly let it slip out that he really likes being close with you. Like, a lot. You had taken it in stride, chuckling and responding with something he can’t remember at this point. Then, the next day when he had tried to apologize for it, you waved him off and said that the both of you were fine.
Since then, you two have been a lot more physically close. Very physically close. It started off with your ususal leaning against and laying on each other slowly morphing into actual cuddling, or sometimes just absentmindedly holding hands. He was happy with this, grateful even. It meant that you hadn’t realized that his confession for what it actually was. But then, one night, you had been fidgeting with his hand, and you had brought it up to your lips and pressed a soft kiss to his knuckles. He had been so stunned that he didn’t know what to do, but you hadn’t made a big deal about it, quickly moving past it. Small gestures like that became more common, which had then shifted into actual kissing. First, just quick little pecks, that then became lingering kisses, that then turned into straight up make out sessions.
You’ve been so sweet throughout the whole process. You always ask if what you’re doing is okay, you’re slow with things to ensure that he’s comfortable, and he knows that if he said he wanted to stop, you would in an instant. The problem is...Papyrus doesn’t want to stop. He’s enjoyed the affection, no matter how overwhelmed with shame he becomes when he lets his mind linger on it for too long.
Lately, every hang out has turned into either a cuddle or make-out session, not that he’s complaining. So, it’s not very surprising when this one starts to head in the same direction. The laptop is further down on the bed, long forgotten as your mouths move against each other. When this first started, it had taken you a moment to figure out how to properly kiss a skeleton. Once you got the hang of it though, you were good. Papyrus has grown very fond of how your lips feel against his teeth, soft and warm.
Papyrus isn’t sure how long you two have been sitting there, holding each other and enjoying the unhurried affection. He’s leaning over you slightly, you pulling him forward by the base of his skull as you lean back, your other hand on his lower back. His breath hitches as your fingers slide up and under his shirt, lightly trailing up his spine. You two have gotten a little handsy before, so this isn’t anything particularly new. What is new however, is when your hand trails back down his spine and you brush your thumb over his iliac crest peaking out from his shorts. What’s even newer is the way you play with his waistband, following along the fabric and tugging lightly before going to undo the button—
Oh.
Oh no.
Papyrus would love to say that he doesn’t panic, but considering the way he sucks in a sharp breath and suddenly yanks away from you, he can’t exactly defend himself. You’re looking at him, expression a mixture of shock and a little bit of hurt, but mostly concern.
“I’m sorry,” You immediately apologize, moving further away from him, which he—admittedly irrationally—feels upset about for a split second. “I should’ve asked. We don’t have to do anything more, and we can stop all together if you’d like. Are you...Is everything okay?”
“i-no, you’re fine, it’s—i just, can’t do this. like this, i mean,” He answers quickly, trying to sort out his thoughts. You recognize that he just needs a moment and wait patiently as he desperately tries to get himself in order, despite being visibly worried and clearly wanting to ask more questions.
“look i really—i really like this. i like doing all of this stuff with you” i like you. “i just...”
He hesitates. This isn’t how he wanted to tell you. He wasn’t sure he wanted to tell you at all at this point, but he can’t bring himself to do anything more under the guise of just messing around with each other. Taking a deep breath, steeling his nerves, and swallowing down the anxious nausea that’s stirred in his non-existent stomach, he goes for it.
“i know we have this whole...friends-with-benefits thing going on, wh-which i’m fine with! i don’t mind it. but i also uh...i like you. a lot. romantically.”
You’re looking at him with your brows furrowed, but you’re not saying anything yet, so he takes that as an opening to keep explaining himself.
“i just don’t want to go any further with this bein’ all casual and stuff ‘cause it might feel too intimate? and i don’t wanna give make these feelings worse or anything,” He adds, fiddling with the string of his hoodie.
You’re still just staring at him like you’re trying to understand what he means. He’s starting to sweat slightly, and he can’t keep his eyes on you. He’s completely and utterly convinced that he’s ruined everything; you’re not even going to be friends-without-benefits anymore and you’re going to leave and never talk to him again because you’re disgusted and you hate him—
“Papyrus.”
Your voice shakes him out of his thoughts, his gaze snapping back to you.
“...We’ve been dating for the past two months,” You say finally. You’re speaking slowly, a confused look on your face.
.......
“we’ve been what?” He asks, all of his anxiety leaving him in favor of being completely dumbfounded.
You nod, clearly torn between being entertained, confused, and somewhat concerned.
“Yeah. I mean, we never really said so much out loud, but I kind of figured we were just taking things slow. You honestly kind of seemed the type? So I didn’t really question it,” You explain, a small disbelieving smile tugging at your lips. “What did you think was happening?”
That...that explains a lot.
Originally, Papyrus was convinced he’d never felt more guilty in his life. Now? He’s convinced that he’s never felt more embarrassed in his life. His skull flushes completely and he presses his palms to his face, letting out a long, distressed groan.
“i-i don’t know!” He exclaims, flopping backwards onto his bed. “i thought after what i said you assumed i wanted to just mess around, no-strings-attached! and i liked what we were doing so i just went with it!”
You pause, looking at him incredlously, before bursting out in laughter. He lets out another anguished noise, curling in on himself. He can’t believe this. He’s so dumb.
Once you’re able to quiet your snickering, you lean over and lightly poke his shoulder.
“Hey, just so you know...I like you a lot too. Romantically,” You say with small grin, teasing but genuine as can be.
“...yeah?” Papyrus asks, shifting so that he can glance at you.
“Yeah,” You confirm. “And if you thinking I didn’t know you like me was the only reason you didn’t want to continue...”
You trail off, giving him a sly look.
With that confirmation, Papyrus wastes no time going back to where you left off.

“Let’s get a baby,” Jason states suddenly making you look up from the grocery list in your grip as you lean your weight against the handle of the shopping cart. You look up at him before looking up and down the aisle, seeing a little boy, around toddler age, sitting in the cart his dad is pushing.
“Are we kidnapping one?” You ask playfully, “Because I’m pretty sure that’s illegal, Love”
“Not kidnapping.” He reasons quickly, “Ours, y’know? Adopting or fostering would be nice.”
“We can look into those option,” You comment, looking back down at the list, “We need to look into the requirements to see if we fit them, spaghetti noodles please.” He reaches for the box easily at the request, still thinking as he sets the container in the cart.
“I just figured it was time, yeah?” He adds on, his eyes trailing over the features of your face lovingly as you glance over the list.
“You don’t have to explain anything to me, Jay. We’re engaged and we want a family. You don’t need to try and reason me into it.” You laugh slightly at the idea, gently patting his cheek. “Now, Let’s get back to shopping.”
The two of you continue your time in the store before checking out and lugging the groceries into the car. You close the trunk and sit yourself in the passenger seat. He drives the two of your home, the conversation defaulting to something much more casual but not in a way as to try and change the subject as the car finally parks. You continue with your arms full of grocery bags up the elevator. You finally make it down the hall and into your apartment finally.
“Damn Cat,” Jason mutters with the feeling of white fluff against his ankles as you head inside, setting your bags on the counter.
“Don’t be mean to her. What did she do?” You scold lightly and pick up the feline as she prances over to you, the cat going comfortably limp in your arms as you hold her like a baby.
“She tried to trip me,” He tattles playfully, “Ran right under my feet.”
“She just loves you so much! She doesn’t know what she’s doing.” You rebut, playing with the fluffball in your arms.
“She hates me.” He claims.
“Well, maybe that's because you insist on calling her ‘Cat’ instead of her actual name?”
“I am not calling her Princess, she’ll get an ego.”
“She already has an ego,” You remind him, “and look at her, she deserves to.” Exclaiming, you show her off. Holding the cat in your arms as her head hangs upside down, her tongue slightly covering her face in her relaxation.
“...whatever you say, Love.” He say, just nodding along before starting to put away groceries. You gently Princess down again before washing your hands and helping Jason out. You leave out the ingredients for the dinner you had planned for dinner tonight.
It’s late in the night or early in the morning, depending on who you ask, and the door to the apartment creaks quietly. Jason closes the door behind him silently as he creeps through the living room, dodging furniture and pet toys on the ground since you had insisted on spoiling the animals. Traveling through the small apartment was never an issue, but Jason found himself almost tripping over something this time. Something fat, furry, and meowing innocently.
“Cat,” He scolds lightly, his deep voice barely a whisper. He’s met with a simple, concise hiss before the calico prances away. He rolls his eyes at the cat before moving towards the back room, opening the door to his favorite sight.
You were currently curled up on the bed, half covered in blankets, and your arm draped over the pitbull he’d rescued from a mission who knows how many years ago and so affectionately named ‘Dog’. He sighs at the sight, finally letting his body relax from the uneventful but always nerve-racking patrol. He allows himself to gaze over your face and form in the dim light, a reminder that you’re here, that you’re safe. He backs out into the hallway again, going to the bathroom to wash off the blood, sweat, and scum of Gotham. Minutes later, you stir at the feeling of large, muscular arms wrapping around you.
“You’re not dead,” You murmur, not even bothering to open your eyes.
“Not this time,” He responds gruffly, pressing his face into your neck as he holds you tighter.
“Missed you.”
“I missed you, too, Doll.”
“Don’t wake me up again,” You grumble, still letting yourself turn in his arms, holding his face to your chest.
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” He whispers against the fabric of your shirt, holding you tight as the two of you doze off again, finding comfort in each other’s touch.

Waking up from your nap on the couch, you’re met with a figure looming over you and a weight on your chest. The weight was a white fluffy mass curled up almost on your face, obviously Princess. The figure wasn't hard to figure out either as he begin to speak.
“It is midday, why are you resting?” Damian practically scolds but you don’t take him very seriously as you sit up, gently displacing the feline as she hisses and prances away.
“I have the day off and I’m tired,” You answer simply as your eyes glance to the clock in the corner of your living room, “Aren’t you supposed to be at school?”
“Classes have ceased,”
“It’s 2 in the afternoon,” You rebut, “And Gotham Academy is across the city.”
“Irrelevant,”
“Jason isn’t home,” You comment with a yawn, “At least, I don’t think he is.”
“You think I don’t know that?” He scoffs, “I am well aware of my brother’s location. I was expecting you when I arrived.”
“That’s sweet, Dami’” You smile, watching how he crosses his arms, barely meeting your eyes. “Is something going on?” You move a little to the left on the couch and pat the cushion next to you, gently encouraging him forward. He takes the seat but leaves a good eight inches between the two of you.
“My peers are not to the standards I have set. They are immature, uneducated, and do not respect their superiors,” He insults as you tilt your head at the comment, deciphering the ‘I’m better than everyone’ front Damian puts on.
“Damian...” You start, keeping your tone soft as you know he might get defensive. “Are your classmates being mean?”
“Nonsense, getting upset at comments from those children is beneath me,”
“So, are they talking about you?”
Damian pauses at the comment, not enjoying that he let his situation slip, “Obviously, the Wayne name is revered,”
“Of course...” You agree quietly, nodding along as he clearly doesn't want to really talk about it at this point in time.
“...Todd has said that you’re affectionate,” He mentions dryly and he glances at you, trying to be subtle as he’s totally not hinting at anything.
“Would you like a hug, Damian?” You ask, opening your arms for him. Damian scoffs at the offer but leans into you, his are tentatively wrapping around you. Your arms wrap around him gently and give him a soft squeeze while he relaxes into your touch and you rest your head atop of his.
The two of you sit together on the couch and he leans into you more. You start to loosen your arms around him only for a moment and he tightens his arms around your waist.
“Don’t leave...” He mutters into your chest and you sigh, gently petting down his dark hair.
“I would never leave,” You reassure him, keeping your voice soft as you squeeze him again. You wince a little as you notice the afternoon sun rays landing in your eyes. “Hey,” you start again with an offer, “You could join me for another nap before dinner?”
“That feels as though it would ruin my sleep schedule,”
“You’re already going to be up all night fighting crime. Shouldn’t you rest up for that?” You comment, offering a different view of the situation.
“Tt,” He scoffs, “What are you making for the meal?” Damian asks as he looks up at you.
“You’re the guest so you can pick. Jason and I didn’t have any plans.”
“We are having the pasta you made previously,” He states.
You laugh quiety at the stern command, “The Mediterranean pasta? Yeah, we can do that.” He just nods at the agreement happy with the future meal. You gently let him go as you lay back on the couch again, moving over to where your back is pressed to the back cushions of the couch.
Damian lays down in your arms, his head resting against your bicep as he wraps his arms around your middle again as he becomes more comfortable with your protective touch. You fall asleep first due to your already tired state but Damian follows quickly after, dozing off in your arms.
Jason arrives home around 2 hours later, being greeted by a suspiciously quiet home and a certain child’s shoes and school bag left at the door with his partner’s footwear. He slips off his own shoes and creeps down the hallway and into the living room as he looks over the back of the couch. A soft sigh escapes his lips as he takes in the sight.
You’re laying on the couch, very peacefully asleep with Damian nuzzled into your chest and a white ball of fluff laying between the two of you and the pitbull curled up at your feet. Jason rolls his eyes in a playful manner, taking the blanket from the back of the couch and covering the cuddle pile.
He leans down and presses a soft kiss to your forehead and pats Damian’s head before going back into the bedroom to clean himself up for the night.

Standing in front of the door to the manor, you keep the tray of cookies balanced in your hand as you adjust your clothes slightly with your free hand before grabbing Jason’s hand. “Let’s do this.”
“You already have Damian; the rest of them will love you.” He says, gently squeezing your hand, “They better.”
“We’ll be okay,” You reassure him, “You ready?”
Before you have the chance to knock on the door, it opens. An older man, Alfred, who you’ve heard plenty about, stands in the large doorway, his suit precise and steamed. He smiles at the sight of the two of you, stepping out of the way and inviting you in.
“Welcome to our home,” He greets in his British accent, “I’m Alfred, the family’s butler. It’s a pleasure to finally meet Jason’s partner. What’s your name?”
You pause for a moment before telling him your name, “I didn’t know Jason told you about me.”
“I didn’t,” Jason interrupts.
“I’m quite the detective myself, Master Jason,” Alfred Jokes, “And I happen to know for certain that no one in this house bakes.”
“How do you know I bake?”
“Master Damian enjoys coming home from ‘patrol’ with a new type of cookie every other night.”
You smile at the mention of Damian, “Is he around?”
“Yes, Master Damian is in the library as a matter of fact. He’s recently taken an interest in the works of Jane Austen.” There’s a playful glint in Alfred’s eyes as he looks over at Jason before meeting your eyes again, “I can take your dish to your kitchen before dinner if you’d like?”
“Oh, yes. Thank you, Alfred,” You say, gently handing him the plate of cookies you had made before Jason grabs your waist gently, tugging you down the hall towards the library. You know you weren’t as anxious as Jason was, his thumb rubbing against your side to soothe himself. You two arrive at the door to the library and gently push it open.
“I asked to not be disturbed,” Damian states sharply.
“Well, I guess we’ll just leave then,” You respond, playfully turning to leave with Jason before you feel small — though very strong — arms wrap around your waist, your hand drifting to his hair, “Hi, Damian,”
“Hello eayilati*.” He greets, his words muffled by your side.
“I still don’t know what that means,”
“and it’s irrelevant,” Damian claims firmly, letting go of you, “I trust you have brought what I requested.”
“Alfred took the cookies to the kitchen,” You tell him, gently fixing his hair, “Alfred seems nice. I think like he likes me.”
“He would be a fool not to,” The young boy scoffs. “I will defend your honor if the time comes.”
“I don’t need you to defend my honor, Dami’,” You laugh.
Jason stands off to the side, his arms crossed mindlessly as he watches you interact with his little brother, smiling at the sight. He loves how close you two have gotten, he loves that you bring Damian out of his harsh shell, he loves you. Jason steps away for a second to head to the bathroom and leaves you and Damian alone. After a few more minutes, you notice your fiance’s disappearance.
“Where did Jason go?” You ask.
“He will find us later,” Damian states, grabbing your hand and tugging you away from the library, “Come, We have to bribe Alfred.”
“Why are we bribing Alfred?” You ask.
“He’s withholding your baking.”
“Hes saving them for dinner,” You correct.
“Well, hello there,” You hear a voice, looking up at see a tall man with tan skin and black hair, ‘The Golden Boy’ Dick Grayson, “I didn’t know Bruce hired a babysitter,”
“Oh,” You start, “I’m not-”
“Move, Grayson, we’re on a mission.”
“He want’s to get cookies before dinner,” You correct, laughing softly.
“Well, aren’t you a saint,” Dick says, his voice getting lower slightly, “If you’re staying for dinner, you could sit by-”
“They’re taken,” Jason’s gruff voice interrupts the conversation, his arm wrapping around your waist as he glares at his brother. Dick tenses up at his brother’s harsh look and flicks his gaze between the two of you as he puts his hand up in surrender.
“My bad, sorry. I didn’t know,”
“Not that you cared to ask,” Jason scolds.
“Jay, it was a mistake,” You tell him softly.
“Yeah, ‘Jay’,” Dick cuts in.
“But... I am wearing my engagement ring.”
“Your what?” Dick asks. You’re unable to answer as Jason pulls you past Dick and towards the dining room. You walk into the large room, seeing plenty of people already sat at the table. With Bruce and his many adopted children constantly being in the news, and Jason giving you a basic rundown of everyone, you thankfully don’t feel exactly lost.
Alfred is setting out the food with Duke and Cassandra’s help. Stephanie and Barbara are sat in a together as Steph rambles about something on her phone. Finally, Tim sits next to Bruce near the end of the table chatting about something to do with Wayne Enterprises. Alfred continues with work as the two young adults notice you, seeing Jason’s arm between the two of you and giving you a small smile and Cass nods. Jason moves to sit down at the table quietly and pulling out the chair for you to sit next to him. Dick and Damian finally enter the room as well before everyone gets cut off my a fake cough.
“Jason,” Bruce starts, “Care to introduce your friend?” The comment grabs everyone’s attention and suddenly there are so many pairs of eyes on the two of you. Jason looks over at you and you nod as he sighs.
“Everyone, this is my Fiance,” Your name slips from his lips. Almost immediately, your ears are filled with rapid questions. How long have you been together? When did you meet? Why have we not met yet? Is this a prank?
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” You say quickly, “One at a time, please?”
“How long have you guys been together?” Stephanie asks first.
“A little over 2 years,” You tell the group with a smile, “He actually proposed on our anniversary,”
“And this is fully serious? Like, a legit thing?” Tim adds in.
“Yes.” Jason claims firmly.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you,” Duke claims.
“It’s nice to finally meet you guys too,”
“Are you going to come over more often?” Dick asks.
“Stop flirting” Jason scolds as Dick puts his hands up, “And we don’t know yet.”
“Are you going to be baking when you do come over?” Damian adds to the conversation.
“Sure, I might,” You laugh a little.
“What do you know?” Tim asks, raising an eyebrow, “About us, I mean.”
“The civilian stuff? Whatever Jason has told me. The hero stuff? like everything.”
“When is the wedding?” Cass asks softly.
“We haven’t decided yet,” You let slip, “We might just elope.”
“Why did it take so long?” Bruce’s deep voice cuts through the conversation as the air gets tense. You look between Jason and his dad quietly.
“I figured a life full of vigilantes isn’t the safest,” Jason states, his eyes not leaving his father’s as his hand tucked in yours, “Not for them,”
“I understand but you’ve hidden this part of your life from your family for, what’d you say, years now?”
“I wouldn’t have to hide it if it weren’t for all of your exes being criminals.”
“I’ve met Damian,” You cut in to try and ease the tension, “He comes by the apartment quite a bit actually.”
“He does?” Tim asks suspiciously.
“Yes,” Damian claims firmly in front of his family, “And I believe that they are a perfectly decent partner for Todd,”
“Aw, thank you Damian,” You smile at the compliment.
“Why has Damian met you and we haven’t?” Steph asks, the tense moment between Jason and Bruce slightly passed.
“Well, he did kinda break in the first time,” You shrug, “And from them he just periodically started showing up again.”
“Willingly?” Dick asks.
“Shut it, Grayson,” Damian interjects.
“We have nights where he helps out with cooking and all. Then, we just watch TV,” You tell them.
“And when he gets tired, he shoves himself between us like a damn cat,” Jason adds on.
“I do not!” Damian yells, “Do not compare me to a pet,”
“Whatever you say, Dami” Jason teases.
The topic shifts eventually, drifting between the various other family members as everyone starts to eat; Duke got his midterms back and he’s doing well in his classes, Tim is working more in the family business, Cass is making great progress in speech therapy, Barbara is working on updating her database again, Steph is walking the group through drama she had seen online. The conversations continue, so painfully but comfortably normal.
Jason takes another bite as he looks up at you, watching as you fall easily into the conversation with his family. He lets himself relax and smile, finding a simple joy in the domestic moment. His eyes move from you to his siblings before finally landing on his dad sat at the head of the table. He tenses in the moment and sits up straighter in his seat as they lock eyes again. After only a moment, Bruce’s eyes soften as they meet his son’s and giving him a soft smile, a look of approval.
As the night passes on, dinner shifts to desserts with various compliments to you and Alfred. The group cleans up the table before starting to split ways. Eventually, you and Jason stand in the dining room, making sure you have your things and turn to leave before getting stopped by Bruce.
“I apologize for earlier, I didn’t mean to—”
“It’s fine,” Jason cuts him off, not wanting to drag more attention to the moment from dinner.
“All this to say, if you two would like to stay the night we still have your room, Jason.” Bruce offers.
Jason nods in response, his arm wrapping around your waist again, “Thanks for the offer but we have to go home. Cat and Dog probably miss us.”
“Her name is Princess,” You correct Jason, nudging him at the mention of your cat.
“Same difference,” Jason rolls his eyes, smirking at the tease.
Bruce looks between you two with a slight smile, “Well, our door is always open.”
“Thank you,” You smile, leaning into Jason.
“We might be back, we might not,” Jason waves, pulling you off to the door, “Goodnight, Old man.”
“Goodnight, you two,” Bruce says finally as Jason shuts the large door behind you.
“See?” You start, turning to Jason and leaning up slightly to kiss him lips softly, “That wasn’t so bad, now was it?”

Three weeks.
This hangout between friends has been planned for three weeks. The missions have been exhausting, and trying to schedule as adults is already the worst, let alone as superheroes. Sure, you practically live with Wally at this point, and you work with Dick, Donna, or the others on occasion, but you can’t remember the last time the group hung out casually without anyone’s life being threatened.
You finish putting on your shoes before walking off to the kitchen for a water, watching a flash of red and yellow rush past you to the room about 20 minutes after he was supposed to come home. You laugh and roll your eyes before calling out to him.
“Welcome home!”
“Yeah! Hi! Love you!” He says in quick succession. He’s clearly trying to get dressed fast but not burn up the clothes with the speed.
You stand in the kitchen, scrolling through your phone as you wait for Wally. Already thinking about your plans, bowling or some other normal people thing. You know he overworks himself with the hero stuff and all. You feel arms wrapping around you from behind, playfully inching up your shirt as you turn around.
“Wally...” You laugh, trying to stay still as he buzzes around you with his speed.
If someone were to ask, Wally was the best boyfriend. If you were asked to elaborate, Wally’s love was almost suffocating... and you love it. Like now, he’s covering your face with kisses. It’s not like you could even feel it; he’s covering every inch of your face so fast with his stupid superpowers you can’t even see him, so you’re only able to feel a soft buzzing on your face.
“Wally, we have to go,” You remind him as he slows down, pouting as he kisses your cheek to your lips.
“Nuh uh,” He huffs, his hand drifting to the back of your head, holding you into the kiss as he tilts his head slightly, pressing into the kiss as he lets his other hand slide down to your waist.
“Nuh uh?” You ask, laughing a little against his lips.
“I’m the fastest man alive,” He murmurs, trailing his lips down your neck to suck and kiss gently.
“And yet you’re chronically late.” You laugh, humming softly as you lean your head back, tangling your fingers in his bright ginger hair.
“Oh, hush,” He scolds lightly, tucking his hands under your ass and lifting you before setting you down on the counter. He gently holds the back of your neck as he bites into your skin, his other hand trailing up your thigh, “We could just... cancel?”

You sit at the small booth at the Batburger, sipping on your soda as you type away on your computer. Working on an essay for one of your classes, you wait for your guest as most of the two meals sit in front of you untouched safe for your fries. You reach for another as someone bursts into the restaurant, panting. Duke collects himself quickly, catching his breath and standing up straighter, his eyes trailing the room until he finds you.
“I got the food already. I basically have your order memorized at this point,” You joke, taking your order off the tray as you slide it towards him. Duke sits himself down across from you and sets his bag down.
“You’re too nice to me.” He sighs, unwrapping his burger and almost devouring it immediately, “What are you working on?”
“Some stuff for my sociology class,” You comment, finally taking a bite of your burger too, “What are you gonna be working on? Chemistry again?”
“Of course, it is my major after all,” He claims, his tone playfully proud before continuing to eat quickly.
“Fucking chem major,” You tease, “So, why were you late this time?”
You watched him freeze up at the question and lean back in the booth seat slightly, “Just... missed the bus,”
“The bus?”
“Yeah...” He looks away awkwardly as you raise your eyebrow. You figured out he was hiding something months ago, but you knew if he trusted you, he’d eventually tell you.
“Anyway, you wanna start on the project?” You ask simply, setting your burger in its wrapper, “I can work on the PowerPoint while you write up the script?”
“Yeah, yeah, I can do that,” He says, pulling out his laptop. You stare at your laptop, clicking and typing away as you work. He opens his own computer but his eyes drift to you, the sun reflecting off your irises as you track the words on the screen, the act of your mindlessly licking your lips while you focus, your soft hand coming up to rub the stress from your cheeks before returning to typing away. He stares like he’s trying to commit every feature to memory, like he might lose it — you — one day.
Duke’s mind starts to wander, daydreams drifting and colliding in his mind. One moment he's here, working on a stupid debate project and the next he can practically feel you in his arms. You’ve been friend’s since the beginning of college so it wouldn’t be that far-fetched for you to fall for him, right? He imagines you in his room at his cousin’s house, ignoring his stupid open door policy as you cuddle up on the bed together.
He thinks to that one outfit you wore to your calculus class together when you groaned about the teacher and his mind drifts to how it’d looks outside, surrounded by the flora of the local park, covered in the sun’s rays. He’s always loved your style, loved how confident you were in your skin. He just knows he could be the best for you, taking you on the most perfect dates no matter how simple they were. He could be your boyfriend, your partner, your love. Hell, he can practically hear you calling his name.
“-uke? Duke? Duke!” You call out slightly, enough to drag his attention from his own thoughts and back to you, even getting the attention from a few of the other customers nearby, “What’s up? Are you okay?”
“Yeah! Yeah, yeah, I’m chili,” He answers, feeling his own face heat up and shifts back in his chair, hopeful you won’t see his cheeks darken from further away.
“Are you sure?” You ask him, raising your eyebrow, “You’ve been staring off into space for the past, like, five minutes.”
“Yeah, sorry, I’m good,” He reiterates, “It’s just been a long day,” He excuses awkwardly. It’s not like he’s lying. He had just run to the study session after finding a few dangerous metas a few blocks away, but you don’t need to know that. And you certainly can’t know that he was just fantasizing about having a relationship with you or anything, not that he was thinking about owning a space with you, or his lips moving against yours, or-
“Duke!” You call out again softly, “You’re doing it again.”
“Sorry,” He apologizes again quickly, his eyes quickly finding the shining notification on his screen from Bruce as he gets up and starts packing his stuff, “Sorry, I have to go.”
“Wha- Duke?” You call as you stand from your seat, watching him start to leave.
“I’ll get the stuff to you. We should reschedule!” He claims, leaving the restaurant in a rush and disappearing while you fall back into your seat with a sigh.
“You are way too hot to keep doing this,” You scold him in a mutter even though he can’t hear you. You let out a sigh, rolling your eyes before turning your attention back to the project in front of you.

“And he’s poor!” Damian scoffs, sitting on an empty part of the counter as you focus on mashing the potatoes in front of you.
“Oh no,” You respond, holding back a chuckle as the young boy vents to you, glancing back at him slightly, “Butter, please?”
He hands over the butter easily, not questioning or disregarding your ‘authority’, just helping out as he continues to talk, “I gave up a palace for this. A tiny home with only one butler. Alfred is... adequate,” the highest compliment, “We have so many servants back home. And I abandoned all that for the ‘good’ of my father,”
“It’s a mansion,” You rebut with a soft laugh.
“By name alone,” He mutters, watching your hands as you mix in the salt and pepper to the pot.
You hum softly in acknowledgment before asking, “Do you regret it?”
“What?”
“Do you regret coming to live with your dad?” You ask, setting the spoon down as you look over at him.
“No,” he answers firmly, “Here, I am not what I was raised to be. I do not have to fight for my place.” he claims, his voice getting softer as he thinks, “I... enjoy my father and my siblings. I do not regret it. I would not go back.”
You nod, watching Damian as he thinks through his own answers after the fact. Walking over to the counter he’s sitting on, you wrap your arms around him gently, feeling him tense up under the contact for a few moments before relaxing into your arms.
“You’re a good kid, Damian. They know that,” You remind him quietly, feeling his arms wrap around you in return. The jingle of keys at the front door pulls Damian out of his state after a few moments. He yanks away from you, quickly turning away from the entrance to the kitchen as he wipes his face. Heavy footsteps are heard down the hall as Jason peeks into the room. He looks between you and his younger brother, about to question, before you cut him off with a shake of your head. He walks over and wraps his arms around you from behind.
“What are you two making?” Jason asks, his gruff voice soft as he holds you.
“Mashed potatoes and vegetarian chicken nuggets,” I tell him, “Wanted to give him a normal New Jersey childhood for a little bit.”
“And he decided to let you?” He teases softly.
“Shut it, Todd,” Damian scoffs, having regained himself as he gets off the counter.
“He helped me out with making it,” I tell him before asking, “Speaking of which, can you take the chicken nuggets out of the oven, love? Damian, you can pick something to watch on the TV.”
“Like your media would be up to my standards,” Damian mutters, walking into the living room anyway. Jason rolls his eyes at you playfully, pulling back and grabbing the oven mitts. He reaches into the oven and takes out the baking tray of dino chicken nuggets, setting it on the stove.
“Can I know what happened?” He asks, his voice low but unthreatening.
“We were just talking, bonding.” You say, he doesn’t question it. He knows you and Damian were close, and he won’t intrude on that connection. He’s happy you two find comfort in each other, glad you give Damian the space to be a normal kid for once. And it’s not like Damian disagrees either; he plays into the role of the normal kid with you. He talks about school, he steals anything you cook, he complains about his family teasing him, and he acts his age. Jason is proud that Damian has an outlet like that. And he’s ecstatic that it’s you.
You stand at the counter, plating the dino nuggets and mashed potatoes for you and Damian. Jason smiles at the sight and comes up behind you, gently wrapping his strong arms around your waist and kissing your temple as you lean back into him. Jason moves to gently kiss your cheekbone before moving to your cheek, then down to the edge of your lips. Turning your head, you meet his lips in a gentle kiss, your focus moving from the food to him for just a moment.
“Todd, just because they are your partner does not mean you get to hold my food captive,” Damian scolds, “Release them.”
You laugh at Damian’s interruption, gently swatting Jason’s arm, and he backs away as he puts his hands up in surrender. You roll your eyes at his playful response and move to grab the plates of food, handing Damian his as you move to the living room.
The three of you sit on the couch, watching a cringy kid’s show that Damian picked out. Jason steals some food from your dish as Damian scolds the characters of the show, trying to almost convince the two of you — and himself — that he doesn’t actually enjoy the childish show. However, his silence as his eyes track the screen begs to differ. The rest of the night is quiet with the three of you cuddled up on the couch. None of you will talk about this afterwards, but it wasn’t the first time this has happened, and it definitely won’t be the last.

You basically skip into the large office building, prancing past the receptionist with a wave as you go to the elevators. You join a few workers, clearly dressed in the more appropriate work attire compared to your hoodie and comfortable jeans. No one gives you a second glance as they periodically push past gently to get on their floor. Now alone in the elevator, you click the button for one of the top floors, swaying on your feet as you hold onto the straps of your bag. The elevator dings again softly as you walk into the hallway, taking the same turns as always. You smile at the workers and pause in front of the secretary’s desk.
“Is he..?” The man barely looks up from his computer at your soft question.
“It’s open. No meetings.” The man, Keenan, answers you.
You thank him, pushing open the door to the office and shutting it behind you. The sun almost blinds you from the window but your eyes quickly adjust, landing on Tim as his eyes are locked on the computer and he types away with whatever business thing he was put in charge of. You two have talked about what he actually does for the company a handful times, but it’s not like you retained the information. It’s all the same, right? He peeks up from the monitor, giving you a tired smile and leaning back in his chair.
“Hey,” He greets quietly, “You got the day off?”
“No, I’m just skipping work to be here,” You respond sarcastically, pulling up the plush chair, something he had put in his office specifically for you, next to his. You sit yourself in the chair and curl up, grabbing the blanket from the bag you brought and covering yourself up.
“Whatcha working on?” You ask, leaning closer to Tim as he types away, leaning to rest your cheek on his arm.
“Going over a business proposal.” He responds simply.
“Is it a good one?” You question again.
He meets your question with a dry chuckle, “Absolutely not. Whoever wrote this needs to be fired. The expectations but in place and the wording its just- its like they didn’t even consult a lawyer before sending this over.”
“That idiot,” You add on, not fully understanding or questioning him, “Tim?”
“Hm?” He hums not glancing up at you.
“Timmy?” You ask again.
“Yes?” He asks, his eyes still stuck on the screen.
“Timothy.” You state his name sternly.
“What is it, love?” He asks you again, finally turning towards you. You grab his face and press your lips to his harshly, letting your hand drift to his hair as you feel him relax under your touch. The two of you move together in the kiss like you had practiced it tirelessly, though the countless months you’ve already been together definitely helped. He tilts his head as his hand drifts to the back of our neck, holding you together as he deepens the kiss. The two of you face each other in your separate chairs, a little awkwardly positioned but not minding much. You lean into the kiss before pulling away quickly, leaving him slightly confused and his mouth agape. “Huh?”
“Now that you’re paying attention to me,” you start, grabbing the bag again and pulling out a lunchbox, “We can eat something.”
“You’re a tease,” He scoffs, pouting but taking the lunchbox, “What did you bring anyway?”
“Alfred made some spaghetti. There should be some garlic bread in there too and some greens” You tell him.
“Mh,” He hums, taking out the two containers of food and handing one to you before raising an eyebrow. “Did you really think it was appropriate to interrupt my work for that?”
“Nothing I do is appropriate,” You joke, winking at him as you open the container, the food still warm and freshly made, “Besides, what was the last thing you ate?”
“Shepard's Pie,” He answers.
“That was dinner last night,” You comment.
“I had leftovers,”
“Liar, I was there when Duke got the last piece.” You remind him. He pauses for a moment as he looks between you and his container of food.
“I haven’t eaten today,” He relents.
“Well, good thing we’re fixing that,” You smile, starting to eat and he opens his food as well, humming softly at the taste of his first meal of the day. The two of you sit together at his desk, talking about whatever comes to mind between each bite; your families, work drama, random trash TV you’re way too invested in, anything. He tries to eat faster so he can get back to his work but you slow him down with a slight nudge. After finally finishing his food at a normal pace, he goes back to focusing on his computer. You slouch in your chair and open your phone, doom-scrolling and giggling every two seconds. There’s a small knock on the door as you look up, locking eyes with Lucius Fox — the CEO of Wayne Enterprises and Bruce Wayne’s close friend— and waving.
“Hey, Mr. Fox,” You greet.
“Good afternoon, you two. It’s good to see you again,” He greets in return, his eyes turning to Tim as he continues, “Mr. Wayne have you had the chance to...”
His words fade to the background as you lean into Tim’s arm, enjoying the feeling of his muscles under his suit and not caring much to pay attention to the business jargon between the two men. You turn your attention to your phone, sending your boyfriend every funny, cute, or stupidly horny video you come across even though he's sitting right next to you. Mr. Fox eventually leaves the office as you nuzzle into his arm.
“How much longer?” You ask Tim, looking up at him.
“It’s only 1:50, Love.” He laughs as you respond with a groan. He rolls his eyes before kissing your head gently. “You’ll survive.”
“Fine...” You respond with a huff. All in all, you don’t mind. You’d choose to interrupt your boyfriend’s work on any day if it means you can just sit with him like this.

Jason hates this. Not because of you, no. You both have moved past that point of your...relationship, for lack of a better word. No, Jason hates this because it’s another gala where he has to act like he has to act like he enjoys talking to these pretentious assholes while sticking around in case of an attack. He didn’t care much for it when he was Robin, and he cares even less for it now.
He’s already dressed, waiting (im)patiently as you finish getting ready as well. His foot taps rapidly against the ground, wanting to just get this night over with.
“Did you forget how to button a shirt or something? Hurry up,” He calls through the door, irritation lacing his tone.
“Fuck off, I’m making sure I look half decent,” You retaliate, matching his tone with ease. “I’m not used to going to fancy parties like you are.”
...Touché. Jason has to admit that you have a point, he remembers Alfred making him get ready a few hours before the galas when he first started attending them.
“Yeah alright, whatever. Just know I’m throwing you under the bus to be lectured if we’re late,” He concedes with a small huff, crossing his arms as he leans against the wall.
“If you’re just going to be a dick the entire time I’m getting ready, then you can go ahead and leave without me,” You state flatly.
There’s nothing actually happening yet, and Jason almost regrets leaving before you were finished. If you were here, he’d at least have someone to complain with. But, he’s here already and he can’t exactly just leave without being questioned, so he’s taken to internally judging everyone as he sips on whatever champagne is being served.
Eventually, a conversation does find him. Unfortunately, it’s one he would rather not be in. He’s stuck nodding along as some random socialite with a mustache almost as big as his ego brags about his company to him, clearly seeking approval from a Wayne. Jason is absentmindedly saying that he’ll mention something to his father when a woman is suddenly introduced into the conversation.
“Ah, Jason, this is my daughter, Jennifer,” The man says, being interrupted by the woman clearing her throat with a glare. “Right, of course, sorry sweetheart. This is my daughter Jenni.”
“With an ‘i’,” Jenni adds.
The man goes on for a bit, talking up his daughter (”She’s so talented, she is!” “Smartest in her class when she was in school!”), before deciding to part from the conversation to find his wife. He bids the pair goodbye, leaving them to ‘get acquainted’. Whatever that means when it’s said with a wink.
“Ugh, that man is so obvious. I cannot stand it,” Jenni scoffs, and Jason is starting to question if it’s really that socially unacceptable to jump out the nearest window.
Jenni with an ‘i’, Jason quickly realizes, is very touchy. She’s almost leaning into him at every opportunity, touching his arms and shoulders and chest. She even got close to touching a scar on his face, but he jerked back and grasped her wrist before she could.
“Don’t,” He says firmly, letting go of her and stepping back.
“Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself,” She responds, batting her eyelashes as her teeth tease at her bottom lip. “I love a man with scars. It makes them so...dangerous.”
Jason is pretty tempted to give her a scar of her own, trying to steer the conversation to it’s end as Jenni insists on hearing the stories of how he got his scars. Just then the doors open, and you’ve finally made it, and you look...
...Damn.
“-son? Jason, hello?!”
Jenni’s voice cuts into Jason’s thoughts (or lack thereof), causing him to snap back to reality. The woman looks almost huffy, pouting slightly as she looks up at him.
“What happened? For a minute, you acted like I wasn’t even here,” She practically whines.
“Uh, yeah, sorry. I guess,” Jason responds, almost absentmindedly.
“You guess?!” Jenni asks, offended.
The woman scoffs, flipping her hair before walking away, likely to go bother some other poor member of the Wayne family. Dick, if Jason had to choose, he’s far too friendly for his own good.
He looks back over to you, watching as you greet Damian with a smile.
...It’s going to be a long night.
