Across time, there have been countless adaptations of the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet. That being said, it takes something special to stand out, especially considering the infamous story is known by heart by millions everywhere. I thought that this turkish adaptation of Romeo and Juliet deserved to be reviewed here, for so many reasons, the first being its breathtaking illustrations. They are dynamic, so alive, yet so calming in their airy nature-they flow perfectly with the story and allow the intense emotion to be perfectly embodied and transferred to anyone that lays eyes on the pages. I spent a good amount of time looking over and over these illustrations and realized they add meaning to the story and allowed me to discover it in a new way all over again.

Steichen, Edward; Sandburg, Carl. The family of man. 1955
This photobook contains over 503 pictures from 68 countries. These photographs were first displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955.
This was meant to showcase the similarities between mankind no matter the nationality or the race. We all experience similar emotions: sadness, happiness, sorrow, bliss, fear, death... The depiction of the human condition through the pictures attracted me to the concept of this collection. It surprisingly showcased the human condition in full color through ironically black and white pictures.

Tahal Group. Photograph album documenting the development work of Israeli engineers in Iran. 1962-64.
Images from this photograph album document traditional approaches of agricultural activity, such as cultivating fields and digging wells, as well as shots of modern agricultural and construction equipment. There are also images of housing and construction projects along with before and after shots of parched desert land contrasted with irrigated land and water-bodies. The first image in the album shows the Shah and other officials studying a relief map of the region. This album captures Shah’s efforts to modernize Iran by introducing agricultural redevelopment and improving local infrastructure. It also documents the close working relationship between Iran and Israel during this period.

Land of the Free is a book of photographs illustrated by a poem; the book includes eighty-eight photographs by Dorothea Lange, Walker Ivans, Arthur Rothstein and Ben Shahn. The marriage of the words and pictures makes the book more powerful; it describes the whammies of the the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl on the inhabitants of the Dust Bowl. The words illuminate the pictures and the pictures clarify the words.

Melvill, James Cosmo. The Mollusca of the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and North Arabian Sea. London. 1897-1916.
The British malacologist J. C. Melvill (1845-1929), son of the like-named Under-Secretary of State for India and grandson of the last secretary of the East India Company, described more than 1,000 new mollusks between 1881 and 1928. In this book, he describes as many as 600 new varieties of mollusks in and around the Persian gulf, and nearby regions, while undertaking a great effort in illustrating these species throughout the book.

Illustrated manuscript journal of a voyage from Australia via the Middle East to Europe. 29 October 1878-27 November 1881.
This manuscript journal of an anonymous Englishwoman living in Australia describes her journey back to Europe via Yemen and Egypt. The journal starts on 29 October 1878 in Sydney, Rose Bay, and briefly describes some general events up to the author’s departure on 28th January 1879: “W’s birthday”, “Church in the afternoon”, “a hot day, we drove into Bathurst…”. On board of a steamship she first sails to Melbourne, and from there around Australia up north, in the direction of the Arabian Peninsula. Of particular interest are the detailed accounts of the Gulf of Aden, Port Said, El Qantara and the Suez Canal; she describes the area, some towns and villages, and the customs and appearance of the inhabitants she encounters along the way. Often times, the author makes use of drawings and illustrations to make her story more vivid.
Finally, she reaches England on 22 March 1879: “my first day at home”.

Kelman, John. From Damascus to Palmyra. Margaret Thomas. London. Adam and Charles Black, 1908.
Today’s pick is a book on Kelman’s journey to Palmyra, which is enriched by eight-six beautiful and incredibly artistic illustrations from paintings by Margaret Thomas. These paintings transport the readers into the vast Middle Eastern world of fruit bazaars, outdoor cafes, landscapes punctuated by shines and mosques, and revealing portraits of black, sheiks, and simple country folks that adds vividness to Kelman’s journey. The objective of the book is Palmyra, but it reaches its destination by way of Beyrout, Baalbek, and Damascus.

Album of photographs: Yemen and Egypt, circa 1880s. This album, commercially produced by well-known photographers of this region, depicts scenery from Aden, in Yemen, through the Red Sea and Suez Canal—just shortly after its construction—and into Egypt, with numerous images of Alexandria and Cairo, from this period. In full leather binding with gilded pages, and stamped “Aden – Egypte” on the cover, this album was likely produced for the growing tourist market of that time.
Al-Razi, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya. [Kitab al-Gadari wal Hasbah]. Rhazes De variolis et morbillis, arabice et latine : cum aliis nonnullis ejusdem argumenti. London. Bowyer, William. Channing, John. 1766.
This book by Al-Razi was the first printed edition on the treatise of smallpox and measles. In fact Al-Razi was the first physician in history who described in details the signs and symptoms of smallpox and measles based on clinical examination, and he was the first who distinguished between these two diseases by putting what is called now the differential diagnosis (Kadaan, Abdul Naseer). This book gained great popularity in Europe that it saw more than forty different editions between 1498 and 1866. The blend of Arabic and its Latin translation on the simultaneous pages makes this book an interesting piece satiating the taste of readers from both language groups.

With 75 colorful plates by Mortimer Menpes. 8vo, publisher’s original red cloth decorated in gilt and colours in an all-over design featuring an Indian tree and branch on the upper cover and spine panel, t.e.g. xii, 216, 2 ads pp.
Particularly interesting in the book are illustrations of everyday life in India in the early 20th century and of historic monuments like the Humayun’s Tomb, which was recently restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 2013. It is astonishing to see how well the monument has been conserved over time after Mughal Rule in India ended in 1857. Moreover, this beautiful book illustrates the unique diversity of India and shows people of different faiths in flowing robes enjoying their routine practices.

The decrees concern matters such as trade agreements, navigation routes, customs regulations, negotiations with the British, piracy, and the settlement of Goa. Copied by various persons, and assembled by Royal secretary Joaquim Miguel Lopes de Laire circa 1760.

This well known travel book details account available of the first English embassy to Persia. The author sails from England on 23 March 1627 for a diplomatic mission to Shah Abbas of Persia, along with Sir Robert Shirley and Sir Dodmore Cotton. However, the mission does not end well to the latter two leaders who get sick and die in July 1628. As Herbert makes a slow return to England, he visits the notable Persian cities of Gombroon, Shiraz, Esfahan, Ashraf, Qazvin, and Qom as well as other Asian and African locales such as Surat, Mauritius, the Cape of Good Hope, and St. Helena.

Published amidst the horrors of the Iran-Iraq War, Panj nigah... presents a more peaceful view of the country through a total of 63 illustrations by five distinguished photographers. This book also has an English language title at the back cover, which goes by: “The Native Soil: Five Views. A Collection of Iranian photographs by Mehdi Khansari, Bahman Jalali, Yahya Dehqanput, Mahshid Farahmand, Karim Emami.”
