research for this i7 royalty/nobility au thing is mostly done (or at least at a point where i've filled in the biggest gaps) so i'm just diving right in. i've made some progress on what will be chapter 1 but it's a pretty rough draft. i think this is the least rough part.

mitsuki has discovered that nagi has left (for good) without saying anything but it hasn't really sunk in yet. iori finds him.

“Brother?” Iori hesitated. “What are you doing in here?”

“Looking for Nagi,” Mitsuki replied. His voice sounded rough even to his own ears.

“He’s…not here,” Iori said, glancing around as if Nagi was going to leap out from some corner with a bright yell of ‘surprise!’ and life would go on as normal.

Unbidden, a laugh bubbled out of Mitsuki’s throat. If not for the meanness of the joke, that would be just like Nagi. The paper crumpled in his hands and he forced his grip to relax. This was their only clue; he couldn’t afford to damage it.

“No, he’s not.” Another laugh, this one wet. His eyes burned. “He’s gone.”
