This year the Ottawa Architecture Week flagship attraction is Michael M. SimonāsPiece Tower, an inhabitable art installation built on the lawn of the Knox Anglican Church. Michael was approached in July by Nico Valenzuela, the current chair of OAW, to create an installation to embody the theme of Urban Intensification and bring attention to Architecture week. The Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanismās annual Forum Lecture Series commenced earlier this week with the first lecture of the 2014-2015 season being presented by Hedwig Heinsman, founding principal of DUS Architects.
The firm, which is based in Amsterdam, designs at a wide range of scales ā from coffee mugs to urban design strategies ā but focuses most greatly on what they call āpublic architectureā and the concept of ālocal design with a global attitudeā. This has led them to create a 19-point declaration, dubbed the āMomentary Manifesto for Public Architectureā, and which includes aims such as āuse new old materialsā, āmind the detailsā, ābe personalā, and āabstain from authorshipā. Ottawa Architecture Week is in full swing with a theme organizers say will surely get the city talking ā intensification.
Everyone has an opinion on intensification, said Roberto Campos, chair of the executive committee of the Ottawa Regional Society of Architects, which is hosting the event. The provincial government has made intensification part of its provincial policy statement. (continue reading)

Unlike some national capitals, Ottawa isnāt a network of broad, processional avenues marked by nodes of monumental architecture built to instill jealousy on visiting dignitaries or intimidate a docile citizenry. Ottawa is a humble, peaceful city that inspires the civic consciousness of its citizens and Canada. For far too long, Ottawaās unpretentiousness has prompted some Canadians, particularly those from Montreal and Toronto, to derisively describe it as a boring city. However, events like this weekāsĀ Ottawa Architecture Week, are part of a new movement of creative professionals countering that narrative. (continue reading)
