did  you  hear  that  domino  glazer  is  currently  living  in  charming,  california  ?  they’re  a  thirty-one  year  old  who  have  been  in  town  for  about  two  months,  and  are  dealer  at  ace  of  spades  casino.  it’s  known  around  town  that  they’re  quite  adaptable  but  can  also  be  enigmatic.  people  in  charming  always  say  they’re  reminded  of  domi  when  thinking  of  a  notebook  of  aliases  and  detailed  backstories  tucked  beneath  the  mattress  of  an  unmade  bed,fingers  skimming  the  static  off  of  an  old  television,  a  rusted  can  dripping  gasoline  knocked  over  beside  a  burning  house,  an  unfamiliar  gaze  staring  back  at  her  in  the  mirror.                                                                                                                 introduction.                              tw:  kidnapping,  arson,  attempted  murder.

      “ down to my last quarter. ” she watched as the coin swept the air, light catching the nickel-plating causing it to sparkle ... like a hidden gem in a video game. wasn’t long before it was back in her grip, eyes narrowed as she leaned over to focus on the multicolored music box. then it dawned on domino, an idea. one far better than wasting her change on herself. “ hey ! ” she quipped, turning to address the other. “ i’ve got a challenge for you. ” her delivery was met with a quirk of her brow and a curl of her lip, “ i want you to take this quarter and pick out the worst song on this jukebox. ” a beat. “ and much to your probable dismay, it’s not actually mambo no. 5. ” she tilted her head. “ so –– you up for it ? ”

 there wasn’t really a plan when she left her home, in fact she sat on the floor petting her dog for forty five minutes before finally leaving. it was definitely not an acceptable lifestyle to spend more time with your pet so that was the goal of the evening, just to get out. socializing wasn’t really in her mind, a cup in hand felt like a good ‘i’m good thank you’ sign yet there was those who still approached her. eventually it came to the point where leela took in a deep breath and moved closer to the nearest person, giving a light pat as if they were dear friends, while a stranger seemed to not get the hint. “my friend and i actually are together –  we’re playing a two person game so… perhaps next time yeah.” 

      what a night ! while her intentions were to go back to the motel, sprawl out and feast on an array of delicacies courtesy of the vending machine ... which seemed as though hadn’t been updated since the nineties, her plans took a detour. all because of a man that wandered into an upscale bar. had on a swanky suit, sans wedding ring, he was a perfect target. so, she followed him. little mindless flirting here and there while she managed to pocket his wallet, tuck it in her coat while he downed scotch after scotch. this, of course, was after he paid the bartender. she wasn’t an idiot ! she denied his advances, offering a wave as he stumbled out of the bar the same way he’d entered ... alone. with a thick stack of bills, she pondered her next move –– what was she going to get ? top shelf tequila, perhaps ? maybe a few mojitos ... her thoughts were compromised by a hand, eyes instinctively closing as she turned on her heel, praying to the higher heavens that when she opened them it wasn’t the man in question. a sigh of relief fled her lips. “ jesus, there you are ! ” always quick on her feet. “ i leave for two seconds for another round ! ” she knew the gig all too well, eyeing the unwanted patron. “ yeah ... sorry, ” she took a step closer and swung an arm gently around her shoulders. “ this game is for girls only and you’re a boy so you’re going to have to beat feet, amigo. here, a tequila for your troubles. ” she shoved it in the man’s hand, watching as he trudged away like a lost dog. “ ... next time just punch ‘em in the face. you don’t owe them your time, y’know ? always so entitled. ” a beat. “ did you wanna play ? i’m always down or can i get you a drink for your troubles ? ”

where else would you find sofia alvarez on a monday night after her shift than at the bar? she was exhausted and with the weekend ahead of her, just ready to enjoy her night out. already a few shots deep, the brunette was about to order another round when another person joined her at the bar. “only way you’re sitting in that seat is if you’re taking a tequila shot with me.”

      “ damn ... ” domino trailed off before glancing over at the brunette that immediately beckoned her attention. she tilted her head and offered a smirk, sucking her teeth as she pondered the proposition. “ you’re like a little cartoon devil on my shoulder, huh ? y’know my angel’s probably not far behind ... ” she cast a glance past the girl’s shoulder, eyes narrowing before she spotted the perfect person. finger extended to quickly point out a woman lurking by the pool table, very type a ... must’ve been a teacher, gave off major jessica day energy. “ ah, definitely her. ” a beat. “ but, i do prefer the former so why not ? i’m game. ” she claimed her throne and swiveled to face her impromptu drinking buddy. “ like your makeup. s’pretty ! ”

“people normally smoke in the front of the building.” claudia said as she walked out with a bottle of beer she’d taken from behind the bar. perks of being the bartender tonight. the stash she had tucked in her jacket pocket was half gone which meant it was a slower night than usual because she’d be running low by now on any other night. patting herself down, she sighed when she realized her light was inside. “d’you have a light for me?” she walked towards them, clearly hopeful that they did. maybe they needed some fresh air. the bar could get stuffy and annoying with all the drunken patrons. “i’ll give you a free drink or something.” she winked, hand extended and palm up.

      she’d just used her last match, mere moments away from completing her first drag when the voice rang prominent in her ears. despite her knowing, domino still patted down her utility jacket ... so many pockets, and for what ? perhaps a stray match lingered, but to no avail she sighed. “ shit, ” she murmured, making sure her cig remained sealed between her lips. “ i’m fresh outta matches. ” a beat, one prompted by the need to fulfill an unsung prophecy. a good deed of the day, if you will. she plucked her own from her mouth and extended a hand. “ here, take it. looks like you need it more than i do. ” not a roast, more so a genuine statement. “ apologies for the lipstick. shit said no transfer on the package, but of course ... a lie. and don’t worry i don’t have cooties or anything. ”

freedom was something that he wasn’t sure he was ever going to get used to again. it still felt strange to not wake up in a cell or be forced to wear the uncomfortable jumpsuit. the moment he put his cut back on, it felt like going back in time. he had made sure to swing by the clubhouse and the welcome had been what he had expected. instead of staying there he had decided to go to a once familiar haunt. he had been relieved to see that the bar wasn’t insanely busy. he had claimed a seat for himself at the very corner of the bar. he figured people would leave well enough alone and he could enjoy his beer. needless to say he rolled his eyes when he realized someone had actually lowered themselves onto the stool beside him,” there are literally a million other seats,” he said slowly,” and you just have to sit here?” 

      " i could say that same to you. ” she drummed against the bar top, sticky residue from lingering liquors coating her freshly washed fingertips. she’d been gone for all of four minutes. who would’ve thought that in a matter of those four minutes so much could happen ? granted, it did for her. after all, she did manage to answer a phone call, use the restroom and pocket a cigarette from a patron in that window of time so someone making themselves comfortable wasn’t exactly out of the ordinary. she kept her gaze fixed on the array of bottles that lined the shelves, waiting for the perfect moment to conclude. “ you’re sitting on my sweater. ” lips curved into a grin, one that offset his disgruntled presence. it was then that she dropped her gaze to eye the fabric beneath him, indicating that her arrival wasn’t fresh; but that she’d been there far before he’d strolled in. “ ... you can keep it though. matches your eyes. ” she teased.

God, she hated game night. Granted, there’s only so much she can do when La Luna is packed and there’s only one other safe bar in town. For one night, she could afford drinking a little above well-water beer she holds so close to her heart. “The answer is nothing, by the way,” she offers to the chair next to her, tapping her near-blunt pencil into the paper of scribbles. “Seinfeld is about nothing. Pretty sure the MC thought it was a trick question, but s’about the only question I’ve gotten right.” 

She pauses, minding her own for a beat more as she sips. “How many points do you got? I think ten hits a free beer. We can consolidate and negotiate for two shots instead.”

      god, she loved game night. was a little triggering, don’t get her wrong ... brought up some demons from her past; but, trivia was safe. it was monopoly that would’ve sent her in a downward spiral. she wasn’t exactly the best, but she was competitive as hell so she’d do her homework. thumb through her phone for nights on end just to prep for the main event, absorbing any asinine facts or little blips of knowledge that would benefit her. tonight was one of the better nights, she’d been trailing behind the leader by a single point; but fucking seinfeld got her. seriously, she got who invented apple jacks but fumbled on seinfeld ? “ nothing ! ” she slapped the bar and pointed at the woman beside her. “ gah, so stupid. not you ... not you, me. i’m stupid. ” hand slid her own notepad over to showcase the tally marks. “ nine points, would’ve been ten. ” she shrugged and took a moment. it was as if a lightbulb flashed over her head at hyper speed. “ maybe we could team up ? y’know, take down the patriarchy. bucktooth bill is reigning champ and i’m really trying to steal his crown. ”

It fucking feels like stealing. I’d sit here and eat shrimp cocktails all night until they kick me out if they’d let me–”

Yes, in her mind shrimp cocktails were still the height of luxury.

      “ i mean it could easily cost zero dollars if you put your mind to it, ” after all, how else would domino been able to eat ? granted the casino pay was decent and the occasional tip got her through, but she’d rather save that up for more ... important things. perhaps a flamethrower or a self-driving car. what was considered a petty crime was a mere employee perk, one that wasn’t exactly discussed. still didn’t stop her from shoving another fry in her yap. perfect amount of crisp. maybe edith was right ... maybe this was the height of luxury. every other buffet she’d been to in her life the food was either cold, soggy, or bland. “ they really put their whole tit in this food. wouldn’t be surprised if gordon ramsay himself walked straight through those doors and introduced himself. ” she shrugged, offering a smile. “ you ever see percy jackson ? when they eat those lotus cookies ? that’s how i feel when i’m here. i don’t know what it is about a casino, but the ambiance is insane. no clocks, oxygen pumping through the vents for more energy ... shit’s wild. for all we know it could be three o’clock in the morning on a tuesday. ”

“Two years away from this place and it feels the exact same. I’m not sure if that’s dope or fucking depressing.” 

      being in a small town was weird. people actually came up to you to make small talk ? never would that’ve been the case back in jersey ... that is, if domino were actually from there. to be honest, she never stepped foot in the garden state. she just assumed it was the new york counterpart. and that was the new york way, no conversation ... just a vat of strangers coming to and fro with the occasional straggler bumming some cash or pocketing your shit. so, of course, the abrupt sentiment caught her off guard. “ two years ? damn man, were you in your julia roberts era ? little eat pray love journey of ... ” she pressed her palms together, fingers outstretched to the sky as she bowed, “ self discovery. ” a laugh. “ i dunno. i mean, the place is pretty small ... were you expecting a whole renovation ? i’m surprised jeff bezos hasn’t tackled this place yet ... put an amazon warehouse smack dab in the middle of town. fuck two day delivery, it’d be more like twenty minutes. ”

“Hey, would you be interested in doing a lady a favor?” Betty proposed, gesturing to the liquor store door. “Me and the bitch who runs this place got some beef – caught me giving her husband a lap dance at Mayhem like, ten fucking years ago and banned me from the place. Calls the cops whenever I show up. The only problem is this is the only place in a fifty mile radius that sells this Russian vodka that I like – so will you go in and grab me a bottle if I give you a hundred? You can keep the change.”

      “ that’s some taylor swift, kanye west style feuding. although ” the sentiment that followed was more so a bit of self-reflection if anything. reminiscing as if she were there in that very moment. “ they did have that little exchange of making up ... then, of course, he went and mocked her in the that music video. wasn’t even a good body double if you ask me. ” she offered a shrug of her shoulders before taking this back to the topic at hand. “ she’s a dumbass. what kind of businesswoman hauls off and calls the cop ? if anything, she should’ve worked smarter. up-charge you ten times the normal amount. why ward you off when she could easily steal your money instead ? stupid. ” the mention of a benjamin caught her attention, hands slinging out of her pockets to rest on her waist. “ consider it done. what’s the brand ? hey, ” another thought spoken into the void. “ did you know they make tequila with whole ass scorpions in it ? what else will they come up with ? ”

      “ i admire your confidence. tell that to the wrong person and they’ll rock your shit. what if i was muhammad ali’s long lost daughter or something ? could’ve swung right at you ... float like a butterfly, sting like a bee style if that were the case; because, if i’m being honest that’s bold. really bold. ” domino narrowed her eyes and extended her finger at him, in a mocked accusatory way. like a detective grilling their subject, only not exactly law and order style ... more so brooklyn 99. comical.  “ i mean, fifty bucks, in this economy ? i get inflation is crazy nowadays, but i highly doubt a burger and fries costs that much. that’s like ... gourmet level pricing. one of those four course dinners that are laughable. y’know with the three dots of sauce and a piece of tuna tar tar that wouldn’t even fill up remy from ratatouille. ” a beat. “ what’s it really for ? ”

“no, no, no! i’ve been here this entire time. no, i wasn’t inside the car but…” her eyes shifted to an individual behind the meter man, and with some quick thinking, she pointed to them while simultaneously digging in her pocket for a twenty dollar she’d gotten. so maybe she’d went into the store without paying her meter and hoped for the best. “they were in my car the entire time! it wasn’t parked, just… idling.” her eyes widened to the stranger, hoping that they’d play along. as to entice them to do so, she waved the twenty dollar bill. “right? — tell this kind and sympathetic meter man that you were in the car waiting for me up until five minutes ago.” 

      if there was one thing domino was good at it was playing along ... even upped the antics if there was cash involved. the stranger wanted a show ? she’d pull out all the stops, some meryl streep level theatrics. “ she’s right, officer ... ” eyes squint at the plated name tag fixed to their stained button down; was it coffee ? ketchup ? what a slob. “ johnson. like dwayne the rock. ” a pause, she took a step back and eyed him up, “ y’know, i don’t know if you’ve ever gotten this before, but you kind of look like him. could be his twin ... the boulder. ” the comment stirred a laugh from the man, was he blushing ? “ i’m serious. you should audition to be his stunt double or something. anyways, ” she offered a shake of her head. “ you see, my friend’s car radio gotta bum radio. volume doesn’t work so it’s stuck on this astronomically loud setting and i was expecting a really important phone call. of course, as soon as she left my phone went off and i wasn’t going to sit in the car while the person on the other line had to decipher between me or today’s top hits. don’t even get me started on trying to turn it off ... whole process that involves sparking wires and shit, it’s –– ” before she could continue, he was already closing up his notepad and tucking it away, offering them a goodbye. domino watched, waiting until he disappeared around the corner before turning to the girl. “ and scene. ” she bowed. “ fuckin’ meter maids ... what do they gain, y’know ? ”

“What are you doing?” Jeremiah asked as he got off his motorcycle, tucking his phone back inside his pocket as he walked towards them, curiosity written all over his usually stoic face. 

      it might’ve looked a little odd, suspicious even ... body crouched down by the gutter, phone in one hand angling the flashlight while the other occupied a makeshift hook she’d finessed out of a hanger she may or may not’ve borrowed from a local shop. there was a valid reason for her antics, a chunk of gold crafted into a dainty bracelet. watched it slip right off an old woman’s hand while gesticulating over the phone. the thing was probably worth thousands. she coughed, inhaling the exhaust from the motorcycle. jesus, how many bikes were in this damn town ? “ wanna give me a hand, ghost rider ? my bracelet fell. ” finders keepers.

the night shift usually went one of two ways. sometimes the diner was jam packed and others were snail slow. it seemed that night it was destined to be slow. she had only had a few tables and the tips were barely decent. she had made herself comfortable behind the counter with a plate of curly fries and a strawberry milkshake. her phone was propped up against a napkin dispenser and she was playing candy crush. though the sound of the door opening made her look up and a yawn escaped from her,” take a seat wherever, do you need a menu?” maybe if she was not half asleep she would have been a little friendlier,” or are you ordering something to go?” 

      “ actually have one right here ... ” arm extended to hold up the plastic coated piece of paper bearing the same name as the diner in question, “ some guy over at the motel thrust it in my hand and told me you guys had the ‘best fucking chocolate chip pancakes in town’” a few steady strides led her towards the counter, placing the stolen item on the sleek granite just a few stools down from the blonde. “ –– told me to get ‘em and report back or else he’d come into my room and steal my body wash. ” the odd sentiment came with a shrug of her shoulders as she took a gander at the joint, dated but authentic. reminded her of grease. “ so ... s’this like a waffle house ordeal ? because i don’t mind taking my order and slinging my own hotcakes. let you take a load off. ” she glanced over at the girl. “ looks like you need it ... long day ? ”

a displeasured groan came from the young girl as the purple pastel lighter sparked, failing to light the cigarette between her cracked chapped lips. “ya got a light by chance?” hopeful sapphire eyes glanced towards the person nearby. 

      she’d been in a trance ... staring down the cartoon pig in the window that beckoned the average customer to weasel their way into the infamous restaurant. “ d’you think he knows he’s encouraging his own demise ? ” she didn’t acknowledge their question with a direct answer, but countered it with one of her own. instead, she silently tucked a hand into her pocket to retrieve a book of matches. was the preferred pretentious ? perhaps if she were a hipster; but it was more in the spirit of an old soul. she struck it and held it out, watching as the flame sparked the end of her cigarette. stream of smoke vanished into the abyss before she locked eyes with the nameless. “ nice brogue. you know hozier ? ” she teased.
