a tiny hand grips the other’s clothes. they aren’t polite. they never have been, and they never will be. he almost looks human, but there’s enough for chara to wonder: what is he? is he a monster? he doesn’t look anything like any monster they’ve ever seen before. so they ask —

“ are you a monster? “

{ ♠ }— “Hmm? Oh.” Sliske stares at the child, small, impossibly so; at least, it felt like that. Kneeling down, still he seemed to tower over them. Lips part in a toothy grin, a smile riddled with smugness, and Sliske waves a hand, brushing aside whatever the child had asked. They were weak, after all -- human children always were.

“A monster? Oh, no, I’m too nice for that. I’m just a friendly, neighbourhood Mahjarrat. My name is Sliske.”

Han wanted to punch this man honestly.

{ ♠ }— “Oh, don’t be so bland. It must be magic. So, what’s your secret? Hiding some runes? An elder artefact, perhaps? What’s up your sleeves, magician?” Sliske grins. Was the man getting tired of him? Or, better still, was he striking a nerve? Something had subtly changed in the man, and it shone to Sliske like a magpie finding shiny trinkets. Finally, something interesting in all this back-and-forth.

{ ♠ }— Twisting, winding, the staircase was almost giving him a headache, grotesque masks tied to rocks and, oh, this next step walked him into a hall. How... infuriating. Steps away was another companion, equally as lost in this chaotic maze. And yet, three, four, five steps wasn’t enough, as though walking a mile was needed to reach the man’s side. Sliske growls, but bared teeth soon slide into a playful grin as he eyes the equally lost stranger. “Enjoying the party? The company could do some work, but the aesthetics are gorgeous. Tell me, do you have any idea what’s going on?”

{ ♠ }— The lightning pierces the ground mere feet away and yet, Sliske merely scowls, unflinching. “Home is beautiful,” he grumbles, voice shrill and mocking a memory of time gone by. It wasn’t, far from it, eyes casting over a pool of lava and feet brushing the soot and blackened dirt underfoot. But something of a shadow steps from the craggy rocks nearby, and Sliske smiles, turning on his heel to the stranger. “Freneskae is so much more fun with company!”

Veronica had never had magic.

No, she had survived and lived her life with nothing but her own wit and stubborn nature, her smarts, and the occasional assistance of an angry boy in a trench coat who knew his way around a gun. That, and a cup of drain cleaner. Still, though weak in comparison to most (all) in this city, and generally left to her own devices (where was JD, anyway?), she wasn’t too afraid.

That was until night fell. She didn’t intend to be out so late, but sometimes she just got so caught up in what she was doing and lost track of time. She could call JD, ask him to walk her home but… She’d hardly seen him, and he probably had better things to do anyway. Or something.

So she found herself on the back streets, hand wrapped around the handle of a pocket knife she’d bought for herself when she realized things here were a little more dangerous than Sherwood. The voice startled her out of her already paranoid thoughts, her head turning to find the source. “Well, looks like you should take your own advice,” she mused, closing some of the distance and getting a bit of a better look. “… What got you, anyway?”

{ ♠ }— A child, he concludes. Not quite an adult yet, and as Sliske spied the white knuckled grip on a small knife, he almost wondered if she ever would be. Grin twists, sharply, and there’s nothing polite about his feigned attempt at gentleness. Truth be told, he just wanted to frighten her a little. It was best to stay on ones toes, after all.

“Oh, this? A few rowdy puppies were happy to see me, but no-one had taught them any manners.” A lie. Just what were the monsters that slunk around the dark corners of this dreadful place? A glance to the worn wooden staff at his side, and he wonders why he brings it around with him all the damn time. Useless junk.

He gets to his feet, staff in one hand, and bitten arm hanging loosely at his side. Staring down at the girl, the previously menacing grin switches to a playful demeanour. Chipper as always, as though the bite hadn’t sunk as deep as it did. (He’d had worse, anyway.) “You wouldn’t happen to know if there’s a hospital here, somewhere? Or an apothecary, perhaps? “
