The heir of the House of Black
@obscurialchildā
His life as it was now was better than anything he could have ever hoped for - better than anything he could have ever imagined. But there was still the nagging feeling that he could be better - himself - that he could be doing better. And there was little he could do about that. Every day he was trying to do better - trying to learn more but he still felt⦠Wrong. Like there was something wrong with him, something intrinsically broken.
And the more he learned, the more he grew and strived - the more heĀ felt like it couldnāt be fixed. The idea had percolated and festered and then - upon stumbling across something in a book - mutated, grew and developed.Ā
It had taken him a while to figure out how to make it work - and even now - some of the specifics were vague and uncertain but⦠He was going to try. A newspaper told him the date - not perhaps as far back as he would have liked - and of course, he couldnāt know exactly where his younger self would be (his memory was not that good) but Mary Lou had never exactly given him free reign - it wasnāt like heād had a play time so walking through the all too familiar streets he was sure to stumble across him eventually.Ā
The boyās knees still hurt from scraping the floors of the church all morning but that was not his biggest problem or pain at the moment. He was glancing up at the passers by with wide innocent pools of dark, gazing up at a world that was cold and unwelcoming. But no matter how sore his knees were or how he salivated in front of pastry windows while his stomach yelled at him, Credence was barely able to hold the leaflets today.
The water was cold and he didnāt feel anything while he was cleaning due to the numbness of his hands caused by the water, but as time passed, his wounds started to hurt and open up. Soaked and sore, puffy and red, he tried his best to keep the papers clan, clutching ad pulling at the much too short sleeves of his jacket to cover them up.
Lastly, tired and as the sun was getting low, Credence started walking closer to home. Still handing out leaflets to passers by that shoved him and berated him on to get out of their way. He didnāt want to be in anyoneās way, he felt sorry for even being in the first place, but his duties were known to him and Ma would not hear any of it.

Ā He had to wonder why this child look as guilty and as terrified as a criminal caught on his first indiscretion. What on Earth could he possibly have thought a bit of rogue and misdirected magic would do? While something in the back of his mind told him he shouldnāt be too sure, it wasnāt as if this child contained enough destructive power to obliterateĀ unfortunate onlookers (did he?). While normally it would be his undisclosed pleasure to see the beads of sweat pearling upon his terrorised studentsā brows, hear their shaky voices delivering feeble excuses (right before mercilessly shooting them down), noting their hands wring and fidget nervously beneath their robes as their racked their simple minded teenage brains for something, he simply couldnāt get himself to enjoy this. It felt somewhat wrong, almost - he dared to think - unfair. He momentarily entertained the ridiculous notion that he was losing his once razor-sharp edge.
āNevertheless, Mr. Barebone.ā- he made a mental note to question the headmaster about this particular runt - Merlin, even his name was an invitation to bully him! āThis area of the grounds is strictly forbidden to most students, and you are no exception.ā he needed not to stress how dangerous it was; his piercing gaze was doing so in lieu of words. He let his admonition hang for an apt amount of time (surely enough to effectively drive the concept home) before mellowing it. āHowever, as you are new and our caretaker has only repeated this no less than 68 times today, I will let you off with a warning this time.ā he conceded, silky but definitive. While Filch took every opportunity to bark at students about what and where they were not supposed to do and be, the boy had admitted to having spent the better part of his first week in his own House tower, fortuitously and unwittingly removing himself from the caretakerās spiteful (yet somewhatĀ entertaining) bellowing.
Ā Without warning he turned his back on the boy with a majestic swish of heavy robes, with only a sharp gesture of his arm to sayĀ follow me now beforeĀ marching forth toward his dungeonsĀ in long strides.
When the Professor started to speak, Credence had almost forgot about his fidgeting and uncertainty, his attention fully immersed into the manās unyielding stance. It was easy enough to forget himself when the man managed to capture all his attention. His only worry was to be somehow able to not hurt the man or anyone else for that matter, not caring that he was probably making a fool of himself. That was not the worse of things and even if he did, heād just amuse the Professor. Or so Credence hoped. The remains of his self aware oddity were like an echo, causing him to shuffle about as he was being berated on not paying attention to being informed that he was not allowed anywhere near the woods, hence the name that Credence knew well as āThe Forbidden Forestā, that itself was enough to give a hint. None the less Credence didnāt care so much for his own safety with the knowledge of what was beneath his skin. Perhaps the greatest danger to himself was not the forest but that what lye much closer.
He grumbled his face in a grimace as the Professor turned so ravenously, almost sure that the robes would slap him on his face should he not been careful. He then, quickly scurried along with a head filled with a myriads of questions. āBut Sir, is it safe to practice magic inside the school?ā he asked with an almost child-like astonishment, feeling more calm around the Professorās strong confidence and determination. āI-I mean... I canāt do magic like the rest of my colleagues,ā he attempted to speak quickly so that he would not lose the momentum and gasped for air as he paused āBut, but, I think I... is there another way?ā he evaded saying that he was thinking of a way to do so, possibly a stupid idea, too, āThatās why I was going outside.ā Credence explained his presence around there, once more.

A new student. And a new pet project for the headmaster, no doubt.
As the boy spoke his pathetic and uncertain tale, a frenzy of red flags and alarm bells went off in the acerbic professorās mind. He had a formidable instinct for danger. He nodded gravely in acknowledgement of his loss. An orphan withĀ āwrongā magic, of all things? That was a story that had trouble written all over it, and the sensible side of Severusā brain (oh, if only he would heed that more!) kept niggling at him to hand the wretch over to the headmaster and get it over and done with.
But the headmaster had been ⦠mistakenĀ about these types before. And there was something more to this young wizard than a sob story and a promise of relentless bullying for the next 7 years to come. Something hopelesslyĀ solitary, and perhaps not so innocent. Something perhaps even Albus couldnāt comprehend in all of his revered wisdom.Ā
A single eyebrow travelled further up his creased forehead in a majestic arch, unfailingly questioning that deliberately vague statement. What a primitive notion. Magic is not right, or wrong, he thought. Magic is a chaotic neutral, highly explosive power. Severus knew from first hand experience that whatever negative effect it produced had to do with the medium through which it was channeled, rather than the source itself. Whoever suggested this fragile muppet go off to practice without supervision or guidance was, in his mind, an unredeemable idiot. He looked forward to a modicum of sadistic fun tearing said idiot a new one.
But first things first. āYour nameāā he demanded with renewed professorial authority; it was time to don the sternĀ babysitter of HogwartsāĀ Potions Masterās robes, something he routinely resigned himself to at the beginning of every academic year.Ā āāand House.āĀ Heād thankfully missed most of the Sorting Ceremony, tasked to deal with a rogue gargoyle that had been terrorising the East Wing. He could easily have taken an educated guess but he had to check if the boy himself knew where he was supposed to go, considering everything about his behaviour suggested otherwise.
Standing there beneath the harsh gaze of scrutiny, under the indomitable eye of the Professor, Credence felt chills running down his spine and dampened his ivory skin with cold sweats. He gulped a sore dryness in his throat but even so, he could not find the will or strength to look away from the manās eyes. He simply waited, looking up at him from beneath his bangs, fidgeting idly with his hands inside his robe, twitching uncontrollably as if he was unsure if he wanted to hug himself for comfort or keep within the boundaries of his feeble skin, a darkness that he only recently fell aware of but never understood.
No one took the time to explain to him what the obscurus was and after the death of a mother that never loved him, he found himself cast away into a place of magic and wonders and as much as he enjoyed the wondrous land he found himself in, there was an air of unsettling confusion for never having gained the social skills that one might need in a place such as this.Ā
Far away from all that he knew and the small corner of his world that he was torn away from, Credence felt his oddity even more heavy on the shoulders of a body too consumed by the hauling coils within, the auguries of ruin that he cannot even begin to grasp onto.
āMy name is Credence, Sir. B-barebone, Credence Barebone.ā he repeated as if that alone would save him from his own befuddlement āI am in.. uhm... Ravenclaw house.ā the added note was laced in a softer tone and more sure of himself this time as he enjoyed the Ravenclaw tower most of all and the myriads of books and the smell of ancient knowledge wearing him onto lands of dreams and possibilities of self discovery but at the same time yank him away from a past in which he knew nothing of worth value.Ā
āI havenāt left the tower in three days and I just figured that it might be good to practice maybe... away from...ā he shrugged and looked back to the way he came from, not finishing his sentence, thinking it odd to say that he was worried that he might hurt someone or worse, have someone killed.

I think Credence would likeĀ The Metamorphosis by Kafka. Possibly relatable to the character and the situations that he doesnāt want to deal with even though he kinda has no choice :)Ā
