Part eleven {the masterlist}
Warnings: some tension and a little bit angst but don't worry everything's fine
That morning, Stone woke up early and watched Y/N as she slept beside him. She looked completely at peace. Sometimes, when he looked at her, he felt like he was seeing the Doctor, the Doctor he'd been desperately waiting for to return for months. What would he think if he knew all this? Stone couldn't guess. But he was absolutely determined that no one, and he meant no one, would ruin this. Not even the Doctor himself.
"Why are you watching me?" Y/N asked in a sleepy voice. She opened just one eye and looked at Stone.
Stone was pulled from his thoughts by her voice. He smiled mischievously. "Can't I admire my view?"
Y/N opened both of her eyes. She yawned and stretched, trying to wake up. "You've been doing the same thing for days. Don't think I haven't noticed." she replied. How many days had it been, anyway? 12? 13? She wasn't sure.
Stone didn't change his expression, still smiling the same way. Y/N brought her hand to her face, as if checking if something was there. "Is there something on my face? Did I get a pimple or something?" she asked.
Y/N frowned slightly and pursed her lips. As she tried to sit up, she noticed her necklace was turned around and fixed it. It was the silver necklace Stone had given her.
"Looks like you really love that necklace." Stone said, changing the subject. Y/N had worn it every day for nearly two months.
"I do." she said. A smile on her face, she ran her finger over the pearl on her necklace. "I really do."
The smile on Stone's face deepened. Y/N's connection to this necklace was proof of how precious she was to him. "You know, there was something I didn't tell you that night. Something I couldn't say."
"Really? What was it?" Y/N asked, raising an eyebrow with curiosity.
"I told you the necklace looked like you..." Stone began. He placed his fingers over hers on the necklace, and his other hand on her cheek. He took a deep breath, his eyes locked with hers. "You're that shining pearl, I'm the sea that is captivated by that pearl." he said, almost in a whisper.
Y/N was touched by his words for a moment. She felt her eyes well up. This wasn't just a compliment; it was a sign of how deeply Stone understood her. Still groggy from sleep, she responded to the intense feelings in her heart with a single action. As she pressed her lips to his, a single tear fell from her tightly closed eyes. The moment the tear touched his hand on her cheek, Stone gently wiped it away with his thumb.
At that moment, Sylvester, who was sleeping at the edge of the bed, got up and tried to get between them. He squeezed in and lay down. As their lips parted, both of them were smiling.
"I think someone's jealous..." Stone said with a laugh.
Y/N smiled and stroked Sylvester's back. "He might be jealous of you because of me. It seems like he loves you in a special way."
Stone smiled and stroked Sylvester's head. "I'm sorry, little guy." he said, his voice soft. "My heart belongs to your mama."
Y/N's smile turned into a wide grin. She squeezed Stone's cheeks with one hand. When Stone's lips puckered, she couldn't resist the adorable sight. She gave him a quick, playful kiss on the lips and jumped out of bed. She burst out laughing as she looked at Stone's surprised face.
"I'll go first!" she called out as she reached the bathroom door, then closed it. Stone smiled, sat up in bed, and started to get ready to change his clothes.
A short while later, they'd both had breakfast and were on their way to the cafe. As they walked, Y/N wrapped her arm around Stone's. "I think I'm starting to love this town. Everything here is so... basic. It's like one of those classic, calm, peaceful towns from an old story." she said, then added. "But still, sometimes I miss the chaotic atmosphere of New York."
Stone just smiled, but it was a sad smile. Y/N noticed it when she turned to look at him. Stone missed his boss, too. "What about you? Do you miss the chaos?" Y/N asked, wanting to show him she understood how he felt.
"Yeah." he said. "Everything's chaos when I'm with him. Every day, you don't know what the next day will bring. You can't predict it. He always has plans for everything. Big, ambitious, and... sometimes explosive plans."
Y/N noticed that Stone was careful not to use the past tense when talking about Robotnik. Contrary to her own belief, Stone thought he wasn't dead and would come back someday. It was something he secretly always hoped for.
Y/N's inner voice wanted to ask him, 'What about you? Would you like to be like him, to make plans like him?' But she didn't say it. She saw Stone's longing for Doctor Robotnik as a kind of loyalty she could never understand. So, she decided not to press the issue further.
When they arrived at the cafe, Stone opened the door with the key while Y/N leaned against the window. They got to work right away. Within a few hours, the cafe started to fill up. It was a busy day, and they were both trying to keep up with the orders.
Stone had just finished his work in the back of the cafe and was coming back out with a tray when he noticed Y/N was signaling him to come over with her fingers. He put the tray down and went to her side, looking at her with a questioning gaze.
"Look, that girl who's just coming in. The one in the green dress. She came in the other day when you weren't here." she whispered. Stone looked in the direction Y/N pointed. A young woman in her early twenties wearing a green dress came through the door. Her eyes were scanning the room, as if she was looking for someone.
"She asked about you, where the other barista was... When I told her you weren't here, her face fell, and she left without ordering. Do you know her?" she asked in the same low voice. She raised one eyebrow, waiting for Stone's answer.
He looked at the young woman again, but she didn't look familiar at all. "No, I don't know her." he replied.
At that moment, the young woman approached the counter. Stone went behind the counter to take her order, and Y/N stood right behind him, watching.
"Oh, I finally found you here!" the woman said with a giggle. "Um, I'm having a party. At my place!"
Despite the woman's over-the-top cheerfulness, Stone continued to stare at her with a blank expression.
The young woman put an invitation on the counter and pushed it toward him. "The party is tomorrow night. I hope you'll be there!" she said with the same cheerful tone. She held out a hand for him to shake. "By the way, I'm Jess."
Stone left the young woman's hand hanging in the air. A feeling of jealousy surged through Y/N's veins, and she took another step closer to Stone.
"And of course, your sister can come, too." the woman added, pointing to Y/N with her hand that was still hanging in the air.
The blank expression on Stone's face suddenly turned tense. "She's not my sister." he replied immediately. It was the first thing he'd said to the woman. "She's-"
But the woman cut him off. "Uh, anyways... I have to go now. See you later!" she said in a rush, waving and leaving the cafe.
Stone tossed the card on the counter aside, not caring at all. Y/N narrowed her eyes, looking at him with a questioning gaze. Unfortunately, Stone couldn't make sense of it.
She didn't react at all until the last few customers had left the cafe. When they were completely alone, she put her hand on her chin as if she was thinking. "Uh... I wonder what I should wear tomorrow night, brother ?" she said. Without giving Stone a chance to speak, she continued. "And more importantly, who should I take with me?"
Y/N ignored him and snapped her fingers. "Oh! I've got it! I'll ask Sheriff Whipple! I'm sure he's a fun party friend."
Stone's face grew even more tense. "He's not a Sheriff! He's a total idiot!" he responded angrily. He was starting to get jealous.
Y/N mimicked Jess's rushed tone. "Anyways... I should go and start getting ready." she said, grinning sideways. She knew this conversation was driving Stone crazy.
After a second's pause, Stone angrily snatched the invitation from the counter and tore it to shreds. He was completely serious when he did it. "Okay. You win."
"I never doubted." she said, smiling as she approached Stone and gave his cheek a pinch.
Stone almost melted at her gesture. He gently grabbed her wrist and pulled her close. Without saying anything, he kissed her deeply and passionately. When their lips parted, Stone looked into Y/N's eyes. "I love you." he whispered sincerely. It was the first time.
Y/N's smile turned into a wide grin. "I know." she said.
That night, after everything was over, Stone sat down at his computer with complete seriousness. His hands were on the keyboard, his face had that familiar, focused expression as he looked at the blank screen. He wasn't aware that it was already past midnight.
Meanwhile, Y/N had already put on her pajamas and gotten into bed. She lay there for a few minutes, staring at the ceiling, wondering why Stone still hadn't come to the bedroom. She opened the covers, got out of bed and walked down the hallway. The light in his study room was on and the door was left ajar. Y/N stood at the doorway and looked inside.
"Aren't you comin' to bed?" she asked in a low voice.
Stone was startled by Y/N's voice. He turned his head and looked at her. "Oh! Um... You can sleep if you want, I'll come when I'm done."
Y/N approached the desk with curiosity. She leaned over and looked at the computer screen. "What are you working on?"
Stone put a hand on the back of his neck and rubbed it. "I sat down to write the monthly mission report to send to Walters, but I have nothing to write about." he grumbled with a bored expression. "I'm trying to think of something to make up."
"Hmm... That sounds boring."
"Kinda." Stone said, shrugging.
"Well..." Y/N said, straightening up again. Despite all the secret agent movies she'd watched, the work Stone was doing seemed so calm to her.
After a few silent seconds, she looked at Stone again and crossed her arms. "You know..." she said. "I've never seen you do any secret agent work."
Stone's expression was confused. "What do you mean?"
"I've never seen you go on secret missions or anything. Just like in the movies... Defeating hundreds of enemies all by yourself, stealing secret things, and stuff..."
Stone let out a small laugh at that. "What if I'm already on a secret mission and you just don't know that?"
Y/N rolled her eyes. "You don't even go to the cafe without telling me."
"Yeah, you've got a point." he said, laughing slightly.
Y/N continued to look at him with a questioning gaze. Stone knew she was waiting for a real explanation. He leaned back in his chair. "Actually... All this really is part of my mission. My mission assigned by Doctor Robotnik. I'm his agent, not G.U.N.'s. So technically, I am already on a secret mission." he explained.
Y/N wasn't satisfied with this answer; she already knew all that. "You know perfectly well that's not what I meant... Doesn't Walters or G.U.N. ever give you missions like that?"
Stone shrugged. "No. They actually never have." he replied. He thought for a moment, then looked into her eyes and asked her a question. "But if you want, we can go on a secret mission together. Just like in the movies. What do you say?"
Y/N's eyes lit up. "Yes!" she replied excitedly. Then she cleared her throat slightly and corrected herself. "I mean, why not..."
Stone winked at her reaction. "Get ready then, we're going on a mission."
Minutes later, Y/N was ready, dressed completely in black. She'd even made a mask for herself out of a scarf, covering everything from her eyes down. He was just about to put on his shoes when she came..
"I'm ready." she whispered.
Stone looked up at her. He pressed his lips together to keep from laughing. He stood up and approached her; they were less than a foot apart. He gently pulled the mask down from her face. "I don't think this is necessary." he said.
Even though they'd been together for so long, this closeness still made Y/N's heart flutter. "I don't want anyone to recognize me." she said, then pulled the mask back over her face. Her intention was to hide her cheeks, which were starting to feel hot.
"Who's going to recognize you?" Stone asked, raising one eyebrow.
"I don't know!" she quickly brushed it off. She had almost let it slip that Sonic might recognize her if they ran into him. But luckily, she had managed to brush it off. Stone couldn't understand Y/N's sudden reaction.
Their secret mission began with a short car ride to the Sheriff's house. The area around the house was silent. Only the sounds of owls could be heard in the distance. Y/N got out of the car excitedly and started to inspect the area around the house. Stone, smiling at her enthusiasm, followed her.
"Okay." Y/N said in a whisper. "What do we do now?"
Stone leaned into Y/N's ear. "We won't find anything here. We're just going to look inside and leave without finding anything."
Y/N rolled her eyes. "That's not how it works in the movies."
"That's why this isn't a movie, Y/N."
They both silently walked around the house and finally noticed that the attic window was open. Y/N excitedly pointed her finger at the window. "Should we go in through there?" she asked.
Stone nodded. The window bars were child's play for him. He quickly climbed up and slipped through the window. She followed right after him. The attic was like a child's room. There were toys, comic books, and a bed. Nothing gave any clues about Robotnik's disappearance. They both quietly examined the room but found nothing.
As they were going back down, Y/N had an idea. "Maybe we're looking in the wrong place..." she whispered.
Stone frowned and looked at her with a questioning gaze. "What do you mean?"
Y/N was filled with hesitation at first. She didn't know how to tell Stone this. "I... have to confess something." she said.
Stone stopped and turned to her. "What are you going to confess?"
Y/N took a deep breath. She had to take this risk. "Sonic... was living in a cave before he met the Sheriff."
The expression on Stone's face suddenly changed. "How do you know that?" he asked, his voice cold.
She avoided her gaze. "I met him.... After you bought the cafe from Karen and I started going out..." she explained. Her voice trembled. "He told me his side of his fights with my father."
Stone was completely frozen by Y/N's confession. The thought of Y/N meeting Sonic, /the Doctor's enemy/, hurt him deeply. His face became serious and he turned to Y/N. He didn't say anything, just looked into her eyes. Then, he turned and started to walk away.
"Where are you going?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Stone stopped. "On our secret mission." he said, his voice still cold. "Where's the cave?"
After Stone's cold question, Y/N's surprise was replaced by determination. "I can take you there." she said, her voice soft. Stone didn't say anything, just nodded his head and followed her. For the time being, he preferred to remain silent and think about this later. This was the duo's second secret mission that night.
They got in the car in silence. Y/N got in the driver's seat and Stone sat beside her. As the car drove through the secluded parts of the town in the silence of the night, the silence between them was deafening. His gaze was fixed straight ahead; he hadn't turned to look at her even once.
Y/N was secretly blaming herself. For hiding things from Stone, for shaking the trust between them... Knowing that she had met his greatest enemy and gotten information from him must have felt like a betrayal to him. But Y/N had only been curious. But for Stone, it wasn't like that. For him, this was a crack in the heart of the person he loved most.
All along the way, Y/N opened her mouth to say something, to explain, but she gave up every time. Stone's silence was stopping her. It was as if Stone was saying, 'Let's not talk about this right now.'
Finally, the car slowed down and Y/N turned off the engine. In front of them, a cave entrance surrounded by massive rocks stood.
"We're here." Y/N whispered.
Stone got out of the car without saying anything and started to walk toward the cave entrance. Y/N followed him, her heart beating fast. The inside of the cave was dimmer and more mysterious than it had seemed in the daylight. Y/N took out her phone, turned on the flashlight and lit up the surroundings.
The cave was filled with Sonic's homemade items. An old television, a torn-up beanbag, a pile of comic books, and a few old boxes... Stone's eyes looked at this makeshift setup without any emotion on his face. She felt the need to explain again. "This... was his first hideout when he came to Earth."
Stone remained silent again. He walked deeper into the cave. Y/N followed him. She approached a box and looked inside; there were only a few old comic books and a dusty baseball. She shook her head in disappointment. "I guess... there's nothing here."
Y/N's voice got lost in the echoing silence of the cave. Stone looked at her again, but there was no expression on his face. Then, he started walking toward the cave entrance.
Y/N opened her mouth to say something. "Why? Why is there nothing?" she asked. Her voice was fragile and hopeless.
Stone stopped, but he didn't turn to Y/N. "Because this isn't a secret agent's lair. It was a kid's home." he said, his voice cold and clear.
Y/N's heart ached at Stone's words. Stone being so cold was a sign of how hurt he was. She didn't say anything. She just followed Stone and got into the car in silence.
On the way home, the silence between them was heavier than the silence in the cave. Y/N wanted to say something again to break Stone's silence, but she couldn't bring herself to do it. Stone was only focused on the road. This silent night had left a deep mark on both of their hearts.
When they got home, they went inside in silence. Y/N went to the bathroom right away to change and got into bed. Stone also quietly got change and lay down next to her.
As they both lay on their backs under the covers, Y/N said one thing. Her voice was sad and tired. "I'm sorry."
Stone sighed deeply for a moment. And the sound of it was loud in the silence of the room. He didn't say anything, just continued to stare at the ceiling. Y/N almost wanted to cry at his silent reaction. But Stone knew how Y/N felt. He just needed time to process this. He preferred to talk about everything that had happened in the morning. However, he didn't tell this to her.
They lay there for minutes. They both silently stared at the ceiling. Even though they were so close to each other, it felt like there were miles between them. In the end, they both fell asleep, deep in thought.
