"HE'S BACK! THE DOCTOR IS BACK!!!"
Y/N staggered where she stood upon receiving the text message from Stone that the Doctor had returned. She was scared, and this fear within her was evident, coupled with the shock on her face. Robotnik’s return seemed likely to turn everything upside down.
"Is this... the end of the road?" she whispered to herself. The screen of the phone in her hand was about to go dark; she needed to write a reply to Stone, but she didn't know what to type. Frankly, she didn't even know what to think.
She was going to return to New York. That was the initial agreement. But a lot had changed since then.
"Baby, are you okay?"
Another message. She took a deep breath, straightened her back, and finally, her fingers began to move to type a reply. She decided to answer honestly.
"I don't know how to react."
This message brought a slight smile to Stone's face. He knew she was shocked, and he had been surprised himself, but he was also happy. He pressed the call button and held the phone to his ear.
"Are you serious?" she asked the moment she answered the phone. She could hear Stone's faint chuckle from the other end of the line.
"Absolutely serious. He texted, 'Prepare my latte'. I've cleared everyone out and prepared everything. I'm just waiting for him to arrive." Stone replied to her. His excitement was palpable even in his tone.
A silence followed. Y/N didn't know what to say. Her feelings were a jumble, but the sharpest of them was fear. The fear of loss...
"Y/N? Baby? Are you there?"
"I... I'm scared, Stone." she finally confessed, her voice barely a whisper. She had closed her eyes. Sensing her state of mind, Sylvester immediately got up from beside her and settled onto her lap, as if to remind her that he would be by her side no matter what.
"What are you scared of? Your father?"
"No..." she just said.
"Oh..." he responded. He finally understood what was going on. "I assure you nothing will happen. We'll be together. I promise."
"How can you be so sure? Didn't you say it was hard to predict even an hour ahead when you were with him?" she snapped. She was struggling to hold back her tears. Her voice trembled. "How can you be so certain that I won't lose you too?!"
Stone placed the fingers of one hand over his closed eyes. He understood Y/N's anxiety, but he also had faith in the Doctor. That was the difference between them. "Do you remember the plans we made?" he asked calmly.
"Yeah..." she replied with a sigh. They had prepared for Robotnik's return, crafting two separate plans for two distinct possibilities. And in both, they ended up together.
"Good. Then you don't need to worry." he said with a smile. Just then, a silhouette appeared, approaching the cafe. "I have to hang up now. And remember, I love you."
"I love you too." she replied but the call had already ended before he could hear her. She tightly hugged the cat in her lap and let go of the tears she had been holding back. Her tears were an expression not only of fear but also of the anger she felt toward Stone's seemingly carefree joy on the phone. How could he be so relaxed?
After a while, Y/N gently put the cat down from her lap and wiped her face with trembling hands. Her fear slowly gave way to a cold determination. They hadn't made two separate plans against the possibility of Robotnik's return, but based on the outcome of the inevitable war between Robotnik and Sonic.
Plan A (if Robotnik wins): Stone would stay by the Doctor's side, and Y/N would live comfortably and safely with Stone under Robotnik's new order in Green Hills.
Plan B (if Robotnik loses): If Robotnik were defeated and disappeared -or died- Y/N would take immediate action. She would erase all traces of their life in Green Hills and return to New York. Stone would follow her, and they would build a new, happy life together in the big city.
Y/N got up and quickly walked toward the bedroom. With hasty, systematic movements, she brought down two large suitcases from the top shelf of the wardrobe. As she was stuffing everything she could find into the suitcases, she paused when she picked up the dress she had worn at Walters' party months ago. Implementing Plan B was the surest way to secure both their futures. However, nothing had happened yet. It wouldn't be logical to make a decision just yet.
Stone had given her a promise over the phone. He had faith in Robotnik. Y/N had to have faith in Stone.
She left the suitcases open where they were and went into the living room. She had no choice but to wait. While trying to suppress the panic inside her, she turned on the TV. She was searching any news channel for even the slightest clue, anything about Robotnik's return. But there was nothing. Only ordinary, boring Green Hills broadcasts were on the screen.
She turned off the television and headed for the window. She pulled the curtain aside. The current silence of Green Hills seemed like a terrifying harbinger of the storm that was about to break. As Y/N listened to this silence, she knew Stone was currently face-to-face with her father at the Mean Bean. Although she didn't know it yet, both their futures depended entirely on the outcome of the battle she would watch from this window.
Y/N leaned against the windowpane. She fixed her gaze on the town's main street and let out a deep sigh. She would wait. She felt trapped between her trust in Stone and her distrust of her father.
She spent that night on the sofa, waiting sleeplessly and anxiously. Not a single message had arrived from Stone.
Y/N had dozed off where she was, just as the morning sun began to rise. While she was taking her short nap, the town had already started to stir. Sylvester, to signal that he was hungry, rubbed himself against his owner's legs, causing Y/N to wake up with a jolt. She rubbed her aching eyes, got up, and quietly went to the kitchen to feed her cat.
While Sylvester was greedily eating his fill, noises began to rise from outside. "What the hell..?" she muttered to herself. She immediately looked outside the window, while at the same time turning on the news channels on the TV. Green Hills had suddenly started filling up with G.U.N. troops. Tanks, personnel carriers, and soldiers... Y/N's heart was pounding out of her chest.
A few minutes later, the sky began to take on a strange look, and the noises intensified. Then, a massive metallic body started rising piece by piece from outside the town: The Giant Eggman Robot.
Y/N was glued to the window, as if frozen in place. Through the glass eyes of that colossal, terrifying, and mustachioed robot, she could make out a small silhouette. This had to be Doctor Robotnik. Her father...
She ran to get the binoculars from one of the drawers in the study and looked again. Yes, it was definitely him. But he looked different from the pictures. He had changed. And a little way from him, near the control panel, was someone else with a familiar, calm posture: Stone. She would recognize that smile anywhere.
Seeing that he was also inside this destruction machine justified all of Y/N's fears. Stone was by the Doctor's side. "No..." she whispered desperately.
The battle quickly began to rage across the town. As far as Y/N could see from the window, she watched the relentless struggle of the robot against Sonic, accompanied by the live broadcasts on TV. The town was shaking, screams were heard, and all of Y/N's hopes were being shattered.
But the moment everything ended had arrived.
The Giant Eggman Robot took one final blow, rising from the sky. The scene she saw on the screen and through the window was the same: that colossal metal monster was toppling towards the hills of Green Hills in a heavy, noisy collapse. Debris and clouds of dust covered everything.
Y/N remained at the window, breathless. The news anchor was talking about 'Doctor Robotnik's Defeat' and 'The Destruction of the Giant Robot'. Y/N had seen Robotnik fall with the gigantic wreckage and naturally assumed he was dead. Another knot had been tied in the one that had been inside her for years, but she didn't grieve for him.
But what about Stone?
Y/N looked again at the TV screen and the dusty wreckage area visible from the window. Stone's name wasn't even mentioned in the news. Stone's fate was unknown. The wreckage was vast and confusing. Y/N pressed her forehead against the glass, tears streamed down her cheeks, wetting the marble of the window frame. She desperately wished that Stone was not dead.
After minutes of despair, Y/N slowly moved away from the glass. She straightened her back. She wasn't crying anymore. Her emotions had abruptly shut off, like a robot. All that remained was the obligation to do what had to be done.
With exhausted steps, she walked to the bedroom and finished packing the suitcases she had left half-done. With great speed and a mechanical coolness, she crammed all of Stone's personal belongings -every piece of clothing, every book, and every memory- into the suitcases. Then, she took the suitcases and Sylvester's carrier cage and headed outside to the car. She loaded everything into the car.
It was time for the most critical step: activating the badniks programmed for cleaning. Stone had previously defined her voice specifically to the badniks. The command she gave was simple and definite: "Erase all fingerprints, DNA residue, and foreign traces from the house."
With this voice command, the small cleaning badniks immediately sprang into action. The badniks spread across every corner and every surface of the house. Y/N didn't hesitate to even have Sylvester's traces cleaned. Not the slightest shred of evidence of their presence in this house was to remain.
Before stepping out the front door, Y/N looked at the house one last time. This home, which had been full of her memories just two hours ago, was now completely purged. Leaving all of this behind, she closed the door. She had tasked a tiny, flea-sized badnik to dismantle the entry panel next to the door and short-circuit it. It would follow her once the job was done.
As she got into the car and closed the door, she rested her head on the steering wheel. Stone's familiar scent, which had permeated the car, now only brought her pain. She wanted to cry, but her eyes were dry as a desert. This situation seemed to double her agony.
She let out a deep breath, straightened up, and started the car's engine. She and Sylvester set off toward New York. The journey was nothing but a bitter silence. The radio was off, there was only the drone of the tires on the road. She was now returning along the very roads she had taken months ago into the unknown.
It was well past midnight when she drove into New York, but the city was still awake. She had truly missed this place, but she would have preferred her return to be with Stone. Driving through the city streets, she arrived at the house and the streets of her childhood. She got out of the car and carried Sylvester's cage and the suitcases one by one to the front door. When she turned the lock, the house, which had been deserted for months, greeted her like a dusty, cold sanctuary.
After carrying everything inside, she activated the badniks again and had the house cleaned thoroughly. Then she opened the suitcases and began to unpack and put away the belongings. Every movement was an obligation. Every item was a memory of a lover whose return was not guaranteed. As Y/N did all this, she was driven by a single purpose: to give Stone a home he could trust and return to one day, no matter where he was or how long it took.
For the three days after returning to New York, Y/N hadn't contacted anyone except Sylvester. She hadn't even left the house. Her hope was completely exhausted, and she now assumed Stone had died along with Robotnik.
That day, her feet carried her to her mother's grave, just as they did whenever she felt trapped. In her mother's presence, her tears were set free. "I'm back, mom." she whispered toward the ground. "But I'm alone..."
She slowly knelt down. Looking at the name on the gravestone, the pain inside her seemed to double. As her tears wetted the earth, she articulated the void left by Stone's absence. "You know, for the first time in my life, I felt complete. Everything with Stone... was so right. It was as if I had found the piece of me that had always been missing. But now... He's gone. And I..." she poured out what was in her mind and heart. She paused for a moment, feeling a lump in her throat. "I'm shattered again, mom." she added, her voice trembling just like her shoulders. "Losing him... I don't know what to do or what to hold onto this time."
Meanwhile, Stone was far from Green Hills and at the bottom of the sea. He couldn't recall what happened after he hit his head inside the Giant Eggman Robot and blacked out. When he opened his eyes, he was at the Mean Bean. He was alive, but his head and body were covered in cuts and bruises. The first thing he did upon regaining consciousness was to go back and find the Doctor. But when he returned, the gigantic robot was destroyed. They had been defeated. And the Doctor was gravely injured under the wreckage. After a long search, he found him and took him to a place no one could find: Robotnik's large crab shaped robot, The Crab. This place was specially equipped like an underground bunker. Doctor Robotnik was Stone's mentor, his teacher and the most important figure in his life. Leaving him in the hands of Sonic or G.U.N. was unthinkable for Stone.
He had been sleepless for days. He had put the Doctor under treatment there and hadn't left his side until his condition was stable. Robotnik was in a coma, but thanks to Stone's efforts, his vital signs were steady. Stone couldn't contact Y/N because he didn't want to risk any signal drawing G.U.N. to their location. However, as soon as the Doctor's condition stabilized, Stone had only one goal: to go to her.
That night, Y/N had fallen asleep with Sylvester on her lap. It was well past midnight. In her quiet house, where even the city's drone struggled to penetrate, she heard a sound that broke her sleep. The slow, almost furtive sound of the door opening. Her eyes snapped open, she dropped the cat onto the sofa and quickly sprang up. Her heart was racing.
In the hallway, among the shadows, stood a slow-moving, exhausted silhouette.
"Stone?" she whispered. The disbelief in her voice had overpowered the fear.
The silhouette slowly took a step, and his face became visible in the dim light. His hair was a mess, his face was covered in dried blood and dirt, and the wound on his eyebrow was unbandaged. His gaze was as weary as his body.
It was as if no thought remained in Y/N's mind, she acted purely on instinct. She immediately ran toward Stone and wrapped her arms around his neck. She hugged him so tightly that she could feel their bones pressing together. "You idiot! I thought you were dead!" she scolded, burying her face into Stone's shoulder.
As Stone hugged her back with the same intensity, his tension finally eased. "I'm so sorry, baby." he whispered. "I couldn't call. I had to secure the Doctor and stabilize his condition. He needed me."
While Stone took off his dirty and torn clothes and stepped into the shower, Y/N prepared a first kit. When he came out of the shower, she led him to the living room. She gently cleaned and bandaged the scrapes and wounds on Stone's body and head. During this, Stone summarized what had happened without taking his eyes off her.
When she was done, he lay down on the sofa, resting his head on her lap. Y/N's hand immediately began to run through Stone's soft hair.
He took a deep breath. "I'm so glad you're here." he whispered. "I don't know what I would do without you."
In response, Y/N leaned down with a smile and gently kissed him just beside his temple. At this, Stone smiled and closed his eyes.
As she continued to stroke Stone's hair, different languages began to spill from her lips.
"Seni seviyorum." she first whispered.
"Te amo."
"Je t'aime."
"Ich liebe dich."
"Aishitemasu."
"I can't imagine a life without you."
Stone had completely relaxed under her voice and touch. A small, happy smile was still on his face. "Come on, let's go to bed, mi amor." she said.
Stone slowly sat up. He gently cupped Y/N's face with both hands. Without rushing, he closed the distance between them and began to kiss her on the lips. Neither of them could describe how much they had missed this feeling. When he pulled back, he whispered gratefully onto her lips. "Thank you."
Y/N responded by giving Stone a small kiss on the lips. She took his hand, helped him up, and led him to the bedroom. As they both lay in bed, Y/N gently rested Stone's head on her chest and softly kissed his hair.
