Monster High G3 is better outside the context of Monster High
Hi, I like to start off and say this is a long rant, and I do think MH G3 is good and don’t hate it as a Person who grew up on G 1 and 2. I also like to say before anyone starts hating, I'm a chubby pansexual person of color who goes by all pronouns, and most to all friends are ADHD or autistic, I don’t hate it because it’s “woke”. I also will say that I haven’t seen all of it, only a few eps but I do know the summary, and I do want to finish it. These are just my opininons Okay? And I’m doing this cause I’m going to rewrite it later on.
I'm going to split this into sections (NOTE: some overlap)
Characters
First an all, don’t get me wrong, I love all the main Girls. (Dead serious, I live for Lagoona) But the characters are very much holding on to their G1 counterparts while being totally different characters or trying to be totally different. For some they kept in the same area of personality/story and others they just made whole new characters/backstories and just named them the same as G1 characters. I think the best examples of this is Clawdeen G3 and Clawdeen G1 or Abbey G1 and Abbey G3 (whole different person was maded), compared to Draculaura G1 and 3 or Frankie G1 and G3 (stayed very alike, if not the same characters just a little different).
Which is a very big debate when it comes to reboots, how different should the characters be from the OGs or should we just make new characters in the same concept? This is where I think G3 Monster High had an identity crisis, because some characters were very close to OGs, if not more built on, story-wise from G1 (if that makes sense), and others are just different characters with different stories, named the same thing. This is really weird because it seems like we should think about these people as different from G1 but at the same time, they cling to G1’s characters when they aren’t staying true to those people most of the time.
This is why I think I had to watch G3 not as a reboot but just as its own show. As a reboot, it seems to struggle if not fail, but as its own thing, it seems to make more sense. That’s also why I think people who didn’t grow up on G1 or G2 and first saw G3 don’t see the problems or issues with G3 as a reboot.
Plot
I wish that G3 had pushed itself to tackle more challenging topics. It had a great chance with Clawdeen being the main character, half-human and monster, with her G1 personality would have been a great way to show the struggles of being a mix. And yes, this is a kid show that doesn’t mean we can’t introduce hard topics and concepts in a kid-friendly way. A great example of this is Blue. I think that one of the biggest differences between G1 and G3 is how they handle challenging topics. G1 and 2 were more about wanting people to be accepted, even if their monsters (of course, as much as a 2000s show could push that Ideal). Then there is G3, which, for at least (pleae corrected me if I'm wrong, as someone who has only seen up to meeting Clawd), for the first espoused is about accepting other but then goes into a whole other plot where that OG idea took a backseat.
I was talking to my friend about this (she has watched all of it, or the 1 season, and loves it), and she pointed out the fact that the main character hasn’t really changed. What I mean is that we didn’t get to see another POV different from Frankie G1 in G3. We got G3 Clawdeen who act very similar to G1 Frankie, if not the same. I just need the main characters that aren’t bubbly, optimistic people, and we missed out on that chance. G3 has the same main character trope we have seen from G1 through G2.
Character designs(This is a non-issue, just a rant)
The character designs could be a lot better. I seen a lot of people redesign G3 characters because the one thing you can’t mess up on Monster High is the fashion. If Monster High is known for one thing, it’s their clothes. Do I personally think that G3 drops the ball a little on this, especially on background characters (*cough cough* keith *cough cough*).
This is just for fun. If people like it, I will continue on more characters. I look at the G1 and G3 character descriptions and stories
Clawdeen Wolf
Storyline: She is the main character and is 15; Clawdeen is a half-human, half-werewolf hybrid. Clawdeen never felt close to her human roots, and to be honest, she doesn’t like her human side at all. The only humans she liked were her father and grandmother. Clawdeen wants to be a fashion designer because her grandmother was a fashion designer, and she wants to follow in her footsteps. But that would mean give into her human side more because a fashion designer is more of a human job since most monsters don't focus on fashion.
Clawdeen hates humans because they hate her. Her father and his family were shunned by everyone in their town and forced to leave with Clawdeens 1
mother. Her mother was looked down upon by the wolf community. They moved away to a town where no one knew who they were. Her father would be with humans by day and with his werewolf family by night. Clawdeen's dislike for humans deepened when she and her sister (Howleen) were outside on a full moon playing, and human hunters found them. They had to run and hide before going home. This hurt her sister very deeply and made her family have to move again for their safety.
Clawdeen and her siblings were home-schooled for most of their young live's, and not until middle school did they go to any school. Clawdeen got into many fights because of other monsters making fun of her family, after that, they started to homeschool again until Clawdeen's 2 years of high school. She and her siblings can only turn into werewolves on full moons.
Personality: Clawdeen is a confident, bold, fierce, energetic type of monster. She is loyal and protective of her friends and family. She tries to embrace her monster and human sides. She is very resourceful when it comes to fashion. Clawdeen knows what she wants and goes get it
Looks: She is curvy but also has an athletic build. Clawdeen is 5’7 and has black Skin. Yellow sharp eyes, black curly hair with blonde underneath.
Aesthetic: She is very Y2K inspired, but with a grunge twist and darker colors
Draculaura
Storyline: Draculaura is 15 (500) and a witch, which was against her dad's wishes. She is very good at magic, even when she has to keep it a secret because of her having to be the next vampire voice in the court of monsters, taking after her fathe,r Dracula. Her mother died long ago, leaving her and her father alone. This made her father very protective of Draculaura. This also means he wants her not to put herself in danger, like being a witch, which is also not really accepted since witchcraft comes from humans (no one likes humans). She is vegan.
Personality: Draculaura is a sweet, friendly, energetic, sensitiv,e and creative monster. She is very easy-going and somewhat childish (she loves a lot of “childish” things), and she can also be a little naive but not dumb. Draculaura can be distressed easily and stressed since she is pressured to be this hotshot next court vampire.
Looks: She is 5,2 with a pear-shaped body. She has light pink skin and pointed ears, plus sharp fangs. Draculaura has straight, dark black hair with pink highlights.
Aesthetic: She wears Victorian/ pastel goth/Coquette-inspired clothes with a pink spin on them. Draculaura most of the time wears shirts or dresses, but sometimes pants.
Frankie
Storyline: Frankie is a frankenmonster and is a non-binary “15” (mind/body of 15 but is one year old). They have been alive for about a year and have been super into anthropology (the study of humans). They have never met a human aside from their mother. Their mother had to make a special deal with the head Master for Frankie to go to school. They are very passionate about humans and feel that there are humans out there who can/would accept them. They are very naive because they haven't experienced much of life before.
Personality: They are naive about life but very smart when it comes to science and mathematics. They are friendly, sweet, outgoin,g and a little clumsy. Frankie doesn't understand social norms or how to read emotions or the room yet. Idiots and sarcasm are taken literally ,which sometimes makes it hard for Frankie to understand peopl,e but their friends are there to help. Also non-binary and acro-Ace
Looks: Frankie is slim but built with light green skin. They have a very square body type and no private part plus a very androgynous look. Frankie has long black mullet hair with blue and whitish Grey high-lights. They have two different colors of eyes (blue and green)
Aesthetic: They wear lots of gothic academia.. They wears alot of dark blues, yellows, grays, whites, blacks, and greens. Frankie also wears plaids and jewelry (from Cleo). They wear both skirts and pants
Cleo de Nile
Storyline: Cleo De Nile(15) is the second mummy princess (5,800 years ago) of the lost kingdom of the De Nile era. She and her family are acknowledged “Rulers” of their people's afterlives of that era by the gods. Cleo wants to be more than just a De Nile, even though she is proud of where she comes from. She just wants to be known for her own Legacy which is hard for two reasons. Cleo is expected to live up to the De Nile name and her sister's example. Her Mother, father, and Sister (Nefera) push her and criticize her to be the best (perfect grades, perfect exam scores, etc.). The second reason is the fact that she doesn’t know what her legacy should be. Cleo was given everything: richness, looks, and now, as a mummy princess, powers. She never had to work for anything, which shows in her personality, but there isn’t anything that (she knows of) she isn’t good at.
This is most of her storyline, as she tries to push herself to be better than everyone else to prove herself, but Cleo doesn’t feel like it is enough to prove she is more than a De Nile.
Personality: Cleo though insecure is very confident sometimes too confident to the point she comes off as arrogant and mean. She was rised to expect to be treated like a god, now she is spoiled and snobby. Cleo is competitive and sassy/bossy since she always wants to the best. But deep down she is caring and can be very thoughtful.
Looks: Cleo has slim, tall, and tan-light brown skin tone. She has straight hair with blue and blonde highlights. Cleo some times curlys her hair or puts it in different types of hair styles ( think of half up, ponytail, braids, and buns).
Aesthetic: She wears alot of Y2K/richcore/ Egyptian outfits and anything that she likes and is trending. Cleo wears a lot of yellow, gold, blue, and blacks, which are the colors that represent her Dynasty.
