Finding Your PR Passion
According to PRSA, the official definition of public relations is: “a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” In recent years with the introduction of social media, the public relations spectrum has broadened quite a bit making it difficult for some to determine their true PR passion.
So how does one find their niche or what area best suits them in the world of public relations? Check out this activity to get you started.
1. DROP THE DIGITAL: I love my iGadgets just as much as the next pr girl but when it comes to tapping into your inner voice, a good ol fashioned pen and paper are best. This will serve as your personal brainstorming session so you must remain open and jot down every idea or thought of what you’d like to do. It’s important to keep your mind open and allow the ideas to flow….you can edit later.
2. CENTER YOURSELF: Write your name in the middle of the paper and draw a circle around it. Next, draw lines coming out of that circle, as much as you need, and label those lines with what would you like to do and what are you good at. Be sure to include not only your strengths but also weaknesses you are willing to strengthen?
3. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH: Take time to completely immerse yourself in researching prominent individuals within your desired area(s) of PR. You are likely to find articles and other useful content that will provide valuable insight into their day-to-day professional life.
4. GET EXPERIENCE: Reach out to your network and inquire about opportunities to shadow or intern. Gaining first-hand experience will be the real test to see if this particular area of PR will be a good fit for you.
The purpose of this activity is to get you organized and focused so that you can identify where your true PR passion lies….good luck!!!!
This made us laugh…oh how the times have changed!
