Makoto stared in wonderment as he touched the merman’s skin briefly before his voice made the creature sink below the water and stare up at him from below. He could feel the kinship between them with the curious look he was getting and giving in return.
Makoto took a step back when the merman spoke in its high voice and pushed itself out of the water even more. Makoto’s face most certainly reflected his shock at the pure muscle and smooth fin. He had known that he was a merman, but seeing the long fin underneath finally set the idea in Makoto’s head.
“You’re beautiful.” Makoto knew that the merman couldn’t understand his words, but he couldn’t help himself. He was gorgeous and Makoto was just happy enough to find another human-like creature.
The human spoke and Rin frowned a little, cocking his head back and to the side. He wished he could understand the speech, but Makoto’s voice was low, and his speech was slow compared to Rin’s high and fast-paced mercreature. Perhaps he could learn, though? Maybe this human could teach him?
His eyes were still wide, interested, curious, as Rin pushed himself up to perch on the edge of the pool, seated as comfortably as he could. He chirped once more, an attempt to communicate. He wanted to ask the human what he was doing there. Why was he on an island away from other humans? The ship he had seen sink came to mind, and Rin looked thoughtful. Could that have been it?
He wished he could ask, but another insistent chirp would have to do. He glanced briefly around the cave. There was an exit further down, but the winds were raging outside, and he could see angry waves licking at the cave entrance, the tide much higher than normal due to the storm. Could this human go find food in this weather, he wondered? After all, he hadn’t caught anything earlier.
Makoto crawled forward a little bit, wishing so desperately that he could understand what the mercreature was trying to say to him and that maybe the creature could understand him. Maybe they could teach each other to communicate, that is if Makoto didn’t die of hunger or illness while he was stranded on the island.
Maybe they could try learning each other’s languages, however Makoto seriously doubted it with how high the mercreature’s voice went. Makoto sighed softly, looking over its body once more.
The creature surely was a predatory animal. It’s body was slick and smooth, perfect for quick movement in the water. Makoto was pretty sure he saw some vicious-looking teeth hiding in that mouth as well.
Makoto’s thoughts stopped in their track as soon as his stomach pretty much growled at him. That’s right. I haven’t eaten today. He was supposed to catch fish for dinner, but it looked liked the storm wasn’t going away anytime soon.
