i like how an effort was made to show that despite changing how she looked to fit in with the people who bullied her, sam did not become one of those people.

every time she deflects from saying something smart, she's not cruel about it. she never gaslights flint or makes him feel worse for noticing.

when flint says ‘that’s actually a really smart observation’, she doesn't respond with ‘it’s not like i’m an expert on these things’ or ‘you’re reading way too much into this’. by this point, sam already knows flint spends most of his time alone.

she isn’t shown for a while after he crashes into her at sardine land, but she must have heard the townspeople yelling at him, given she was still in the area, and got the idea that he majorly ruined things.

if she wanted to draw attention away from herself, she could easily use that against him. she could call flint desperate for thinking anyone could share his interests, but she doesn’t.

sam also doesn’t put flint down for his inventions at all before accepting she’s a nerd. when they first meet, she’s mad that he hit her with a rocket – not that he built a rocket in the first place. when she asks 'did you make all this stuff?', she's smiling. if she never connected the dots that this is the person who humiliated her on live television, she'd be totally fine with flint being some other guy who happens to make cool inventions.

even when flint tells her the spray-on shoes don’t come off, she doesn’t mock him for not figuring out how to remove them by now but is thrilled that he made them possible and wants to know more.
