2nd post- Analysis of a web source
This source starts of by saying that sexual harassment is a manifestation of power. It is more likely for women to be sexual harassed than males are. The reason for this is because women are seen as less powerful than men, sensitive, low confidence etc. To be able to understand why women go through sexual harassment it states three causes of it: Violence and male self-perception, the economics of womenâs work, and discrimination as a form of workplace control.
The first cause of sexual harassment: Violence and male self-perception mentions how the relationship between men and women consist on huge amounts of violence against women. It is said that one out of every ten women in the United States are someway harassed by being raped or sexually assaulted. Â Some women have even experience similar situations to this while living with men which can be called domestic violence. This form of violence takes place in many different places such as the workplace. Most men see themselves as the ones who are responsible to provide for their family, so when they see women at the workplace they see it as something incorrect, and as a threat for being able to do menâs work.
The second cause of sexual harassment: the economics of womenâs work further goes on about how men feel threatened by women. Sexual harassment against women is a way that men show hate against the women who work with them because they see them as their economic competitors. Throughout the yearâs times havenât been the same. To maintain a decent living it was enough just for the men to go to work, and for the women to stay home with the kids and take care of the house. Now, both men and women have to work in order to make ends meet. Men resent women because the workplace used to be a place just for men, where âmen workâ was done. Due to this, women received lower pay, no promotions, less important jobs, and sexual harassment.
The third cause of sexual harassment: Discrimination as a Form of Workplace Control connects sex discrimination and sexual harassment as part of sexual harassment. Sex discrimination makes women be placed in low position/paying jobs, and sexual harassment is done to be able to keep them in those positions. Men harass women so they donât wont ask for higher job position. They make women feel weak and not capable of completing the same task they do. Women who have been sexually harassed go through the same things as the women who were abused or raped. The women who seek jobs that are âtraditionally all-male workâ like construction, mechanics, plumber etc. These women go through sever harassment to make them leave their job.
1.) I agreed with everything the article said. Women face sexual harassment at work because some men canât stand working with women. They feel less of a âmanâ, knowing that a woman is able to do the same tasks men do. Since they feel women are taking over, they harass women in order to get their manliness back, and try to get things to how they used to be.
2.) I didnât like how in the article it referred to âmenâ as every male overall. Not all males are like this. Many men are open to working with women. They donât treat them any different for working with them.
3.) Since women are judged and discriminated for having an all male-work job, should men be discriminated as well for working in all women-work such as being a teacher, a nurse, cosmetologist etc.?
