NEED more it/its grace like imagine they get around to talking about gender and sex and pronouns a bit more in depth than just "we need to learn to communicate" so grace gets to explain the human pronouns and rocky then goes on to explain eridian pronouns and that they do not show gender but status- and when grace asks what pronouns he gets, rocky just warbles off something COMPLETELY different than he just explained.

"What's that? You didn't say that one in your explanation."

"Is for inanimate objects or animals." Rocky kinda just explaining that he didn't know what status an alien would have- would they be on the same level? Do they have pronouns and a show of status in any way? How do alien pronouns work??? Rocky doesn't know. Besides- it's an alien! It'd be fitting to assign pronouns eridians do not use because their way of assigning pronouns probably won't fit an alien!

And Grace just has an "Oh." moment.

Like oh, yeah. Okay. Rocky has been calling me "it". Strangely, it does not bother Grace.

Because in English, it/its can often be also used in a derogatory way, when you want to dehumanize someone! Grace wouldn't have any fucking idea some people use it/its because they want to- and Grace himself quickly went from it/its for rocky to he/him instead, because it felt rude to call a sentient being it.

But eridians probably don't have a concept like this. They don't have chosen pronouns because pronouns don't really reflect their identity in any way. So. Calling an alien "it" probably wouldn't be seen in the same light as a human calling a sentient alien being "it"

Coming back around to this in the light of the leaks-

Grace using it/its as a way to sorta detach itself from whoever it may have been before it woke up. Just subconsciously disconnected from its previous life that it does not remember at all. No identity, no real memory of what it means to be human anyways.

The pronoun thing gets forgotten mostly- when they're sharing vocabulary grace goes over the basic pronouns and explains he/him and why it chose those for rocky and that those are the same pronouns it uses too. Because yeah sure, that's an alien with no concept of gender and who wouldn't know that someone calling themselves "it" probably isn't exactly "normal", but Grace also just doesn't want to risk having to explain that it's a way to kinda distance itself from whoever Ryland Grace was on Earth. And besides. Grace is supposed to be representing a male human. Most men use he/him pronouns. Grace did for most of its life. Except it doesn't remember that life.

It's not until much later when they're on the way to erid that that they finally have a bit more in depth discussion about eridian and human sex and gender and pronouns- and where they finally stumble across the fact that Rocky has, in fact, been calling Grace the eridian version of "it/its" pronouns.

Grace sends this off as a "fuck you" to Stratt and unintentionally eases 40+ years of horrific guilt.

(40+ factoring in the Hail Mary mission, then the time it would take to get back to Erid and the time it would take for the message to get to Earth. Probably closer to 50+ actually).

(I do think Stratt felt bad. She did a lot of terrible things to save the planet, and obviously felt guilt for sending Grace off. I imagine the time waiting to hear back from the Hail Mary was torture for everyone, but she essentially sent three people off to their deaths, one unwillingly. Hearing that Grace made it out alive would be a huge weight off her shoulders.)
