It was late, later then normal for Merida to be out in the gym. She felt like she needed the work out. Her knuckles were scraped raw from punching a bag far harder and longer then needed, but this was her coping mechanism. The burden of her loss weighting her down as the holiday approached. Stepping into the cold, chilling night air, she kicked her skateboard down on the ground. Maybe she was being over dramatic but there was a while in her chest that just wouldn’t stop screaming at her. Instead of dwelling on it she stepped onto the board the peace didn’t last long, her thoughts getting the best of her. before she knew it a rock hit one of the wheels sending her flying.
She didn’t remember much of the first impact, but when her vision cleared she was lying in dusting of grass. What was left of it. Her still hot breath filled the air around her and created a cloud. “Well, that was fucking perfect.” She gritted her teeth. A harsh unforgiving laugh left her lungs hurting in the cold. It was too cold for the tears to fall.
As seemed to be the norm for this semester, Odette was racing across the campus to get to the library. A loud crash only barely managed to catch her attention. She quickly glanced around, seeing nothing at first, and planned to keep moving on. But then she noticed vibrant red hair and a runaway skateboard, and before she knew it, she changed tracks to check on the stranger.
“Are you alright? Can you breathe okay?” She asked frantically, thinking back on her first aid training as she knelt next to the girl. “I’m Odette, you landed pretty hard and I think I hit your head. Can you tell me what the date is, please?” It was a standard question, one of several, to make sure someone was still able to think clearly after hitting their head. A concussion was still likely, but if she knew the answers at least it wouldn’t be too severe of one.
