Steve: [ 'As it turns out, SHIELD was never really a safety net' is what he wants to say, but he doesn't. Instead he just looks at every member on his team sitting in front of him before his eyes settle on Tony. Fine. Maybe there's another way somewhere that he hadn't seen, but he was still skeptical. ] Okay. What are the ideas?

Wanda: [ she'd had nothing to say, not at first. she let the conversation flow over her as she considered tony's point silently to herself, first. wanda agreed with both sides of the argument that seemed to be emerging - and surely it could not be that hard to reconcile the two frames of mind? she was only stirred into talking when steve's gaze fell over her, before turning back to tony] We have some intelligence on who spread the round of rumours, surely? I agree, we're heroes and that's how we should act in the face of all of this. How else do you stop rumours? But it's worth our while to hunt down the source of this first outbreak. The next attack may be different, but all the same... Its one thing to do.

Clint: [ He listened carefully, the static, mechanical noise not being the clearest, most comfortable edge to everyone's voices, but it beat the alternative— barely any noise at all. Though, even that was debatable in this room. There was a narrowing of the eyes, a slight tilt of the head. Wasn't that what we were here for? Throwing our asses into the fire? If they didn't, who the hell else will? Was Tony seriously considering letting others do their dirty work? ]

Bucky: [ His glance turned back to Steve at the mention of SHIELD, kind of surprised he actually didn't say anything else on the matter. Bucky could /tell/ he wanted to, though. Wasn't Pierce a senior leader? One of HIS handlers... Then he looked to Wanda before his gaze fell on his hands relatively quickly, trying to fix his thought pattern. ] They were Sokovian, that's all they got. [ He looked back up to Wanda briefly with a sigh. That was the only information he and Natasha gathered from the break-in. The others were aware of that though, right? They had to know, Nat would've said something. He looked back to Stark, curious to what his alternative 'safety net' idea would be. Considering everything that had happened with the previous... ]

Tony: [ he looked around slowly, eyes briefly scanning everyone before focusing back on steve. if his calculations were correct -- which, when /hadn't/ they been? --, his next words weren't going to go over well with everyone here, but especially not the star-spangled geriatric seated next to him. but then again, tony stark wasn't much known for tact, so he figured fuck it, & went ahead and opened his mouth. ] I think it's time we go to the government. [ he could see everyone begin to fidget before he'd even finished speaking so he rushed on. ] We need the security. What happens when everyone decides we're not doing a good enough job, huh? So many people have already been killed or injured because we couldn't be there fast enough. it's only a matter of time before public opinion starts to go south, and I really don't think it'd hurt to have the seal of approval from the Oval Office.

Steve: [ Now Steve's looking at Bucky, because he hasn't gotten any word from him about being affected by the leak, and he doesn't like the way Tony's looking at him. He drums his fingers against his leg, really impatient now, and shoots Clint a glance before speaking. ] We have our contingency plan. We focus on the work we're here to do, which is to keep this city safe. We don't have to bow down to anyone Tony, not like this, not when it's all lies. Look, if this happens again we can let it be on me. I'll talk to the press, whoever. But we can't let this keep us from doing our job.

Clint: [ Funny. He hadn't been affected by the leak, not directly. Surely the leak had had him running across town trying to cover everyone's tracks, but that was old news. He wasn't usually the one to speak up directly. Perhaps this came with his sharpshooter position, but mostly he preferred to stay in the background. Not now. Tony's idea of a plan didn't seem /exactly/ right in his eyes. ] You know, I think we /have/ a pretty good idea of what's going on. I mean, we have some escaped felons, and we're... what? Just waiting them out while the body count keeps climbing? Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that put us one step behind them every time? These guys were locked up for a reason.

Bucky: [ His focus reverted down to the table in reaction to Stark's comment. Guess that answered his question... Then he sensed Steve and - shit. He hadn't told him, had he? There was no reason to, and he was well aware of the fact all Steve would do is /worry/ and get involved in more ways than were necessarily needed ( especially if he found out what actually happened ). Bucky was one of those /included/ in the leak and their consequences, but that still didn't explain why he would be involved in any sort of 'contingency plan' of theirs. ] The hell... [ He spoke within a breath, only looking up again as the archer spoke, and now he's looking back at Steve, hesitant of what was going to be brought to their attention next. ] Steve's right. [ He gave a lazy shrug, his glance turning to the exit. ] You just gotta prove them wrong. Keep being heroes.

Tony: [ he let out a sigh, slumping into his chair with a slight shake of his head. he was expecting some resistance, sure, but tony wanted to believe that they could all be on the same side for this -- /his/ side; which as far as he was concerned, made the most sense. ] All I'm saying is, we can keep the city safe without having to throw our own asses on the fire. We don't have SHIELD to back us up anymore, and I think it's time we start looking for a new safety net.

Steve: [ Steve sighed. He opened his mouth to speak, and then he sighed again. He drummed his pen on his knee, where he had a binder open with work, /actual/ work because he was out here trying to get things done, even though there seemed to be about a million obstacles in his way. ] You know, I would have been here for meetings earlier, if I hadn't been shipped off to Alaska for what basically amounted to a cover up mission. What's there to chat about? We're not running again, [ he glanced at Natasha ]. None of us.

Clint: [ It had been a while since meetings with the team had felt this... awkward, but truth be told, a sit-down like this was necessary if anything. Maybe he /should/ have gotten more sleep last night. ] No one's blaming you, Steve. [ He released a breath, slouching just slightly in his chair as his eyes glanced from the binder in Steve's lap, to Tony. Lots of things had been meeting-worthy in the past weeks, and the question of what had driven Mr. Stark himself to call for this had certainly spiked the archer's curiosity. ] So... Chat.

Bucky: [ Bucky still couldn't understand why he was asked to come to these. He wasn't an Avenger, Tony had made it pretty clear on more than one occasion that he was not. An Avenger. The fact they were all called in without any warning did make him feel anxious though - what the hell was going on /now/? Plus, Steve seemed kinda pissed about this whole arrangement before it was even called into the conference room. Bucky sat there silently, eyes darting from one face to another, though he did catch Steve's glance at Nat. Jesus, this clearly wasn't good. Still, it wasn't exactly clear what any of this was about, why it involved him and as... Hawkeye? Spoke up, he shrugged and leaned further into his chair as he mumbled. ] Why have I gotta be here?

Tony: [ he leveled steve with a look, placing both of his hands on the table in front of him ] You know that wasn't my jurisdiction. And I'm not suggesting we run again. [ he continued, directing the rest of his words at the entire table. ] Listen, it's not exactly a /secret/ that pretty much everyone here -- with the exception of yours truly -- ain't too fond of having their names in the papers. And since /everyone/ here was affected by the leak, [ he gave a pointed look at Barnes en lieu of replying to his earlier comment ] /I/ thought it'd be a good idea to come up with some sort of...contingency plan. At least until we figure out what's going on.

Tony: [ tensions had been running high at the tower since the info leak, and even though the anger and confusion from the people of new york had died down, there were people on his own team ( cough /steve/ cough ) who were still boiling with it. and while tony stark had never been one for pragmatism, he /was/ a leader of the avengers ( on what had to be /pure/ technicality ), and he knew that shit was only going to get worse unless they figured out some sort of game plan. so that's what they were doing now, in one of the empty conference rooms, after tony and f.r.i.d.a.y. had all but dragged everyone in by the ear. ] Alright now that everyone's taken their sweet time meandering on in here, what do you say we have a little chat?

Stark Tower was just too appealing not to break in. And she could already hear Bruce’s voice in her ear—funny how her conscience took on her voice, wasn’t it?—telling her not to do it, stop, Catwoman, I can rehabilitate you, but she had just gotten her freedom back. She didn’t want to be rehabilitated. 

She had spent enough time breaking into Wayne Industries to know that she needed to be silent, so she had already put sound dampeners in her suit that would keep even hear heartbeat from escaping the confines of the leather. She was armed with pretty much anything a thief could want in a high-tech skyscraper—safe-cracking tools, electrical tools to crack keypads, and of course, some more instruments meant for brute force when finesse wouldn’t work. 

Scaling the side of the building had been the biggest challenge, but that jewel money had to be going somewhere, right? She used it to buy the tools that would allow her to climb up to the top floors of the Stark building, peering through the window with the goggles over her eyes to decide which one would be the best to go in and poke around for a little while. 

When she came to one of the R&D floors, finding that it had been cleared out for the night, she extended the claw from the fingertip of her suit, using the tip to draw a large circle in the glass. She had to go over it a few times before she cut through the full thickness of it—this was the good stuff. Stark didn’t spare any expense, apparently. 

Finally cutting through the glass, she took out her next tool, a device with suction cups on it that she attached to the window, using it to pull out that perfect circle from the glass before attaching another set of suction cups to another section of the glass, letting the circular pane dangle outside the window.

It seemed to take forever to get into the building, and as soon as she got in—this should have been obvious, considering her luck—a security guard shone a flashlight at her. Before he could say anything or radio for help, she took a running jump, leaping across a table at him and putting him in a face lock, dragging him to the ground before wrapping an arm around his throat and silently choking him out. 

Selina stood, taking a deep breath. This was going to be a good night.

Tony had been in bed ( for once ) when the alarm system went off. He didn’t have the whole “flashing red lights and obnoxious siren” type of system, because one, he didn’t actually need to send himself into cardiac arrest, and two -- c’mon, what is this? A Bond movie? Tony was obnoxious, sure, but he wasn’t a goddamn cliche. No, instead, it was F.R.I.D.A.Y., her hologram appearing in his bedroom as a lanky woman with an asymmetrical bob, waking him up in her Irish lilt.

“Sir.”

He rolled over at first, burying his face in his pillow in an attempt to block out the light she was emitting.

“Sir, it seems there’s been a break-in at Stark Towers.”

At this, Tony shot up, suddenly wide awake. He felt his heart begin to pump wildly in his chest as he processed the A.I.’s words. A break-in. At the Tower. Someone managed to break into his facilities. His workspace. His -- his fucking home for all intents and purposes ( at least for the time being ) and they could be...oh, god, they could be anywhere. He had to take a moment to focus on his breathing, letting his eyes fall shut as he counted backwards from 10 until he felt his pulse slow under his fingertips and the vice-like choking sensation around his throat dissipated.  He didn’t have time to lose it right now.

When he opened his eyes again he was already moving, swiftly pulling himself out of bed and walking towards the door. “Where are they?” he asked, throwing a head over his shoulder to look at the hologram.

“Research and Development. Level 15, sir.”

“Thanks, F.R.I.D.A.Y. Ready Mark 48.”

“Yes, sir.”

He exited his room and entered the now-waiting elevator, pushing a complicated series of buttons on the panel until suddenly the floor gave way beneath him, his boots sliding up through the newly-made hole and locking into place before he could fall through. The rest of his suit followed shortly, and he was fully dressed by the time the elevator dinged for the correct floor. Before stepping out of the elevator he spoke again, addressing his A.I. one last time.

“Oh and F.R.I.D.A.Y.?”

“Can I help you with something, sir?”

“Don’t wake the others.”

With that he stepped into the lab, repulsor beams heating up familiarly underneath his palms.

“Okay then. Showtime.”
