The Ten of Swords, by Krista Gibbard

The whale’s mournful cry echoes across star-speckled water. Ten swords jut up from his chest and seem to glow against the night.

The Ten of Swords heralds great misfortune and sudden, overwhelming disaster. Although it is a card of loss, betrayal, and defeat, it also represents the lowest point before a new beginning. This card reminds us that even in the worst of circumstances, there is always some mental clarity or new perspective to be gained. Sometimes change is preceded by the all-consuming feeling that whatever troubles you face will never end, but the Ten of Swords encourages us to find wisdom in those troubles.
