âFigures,â Tony said. There was no bitterness to his words, just a small huff of a humourless laugh. Wanda Maximoff had seen right through him, cut to the core within a moments of meeting him. She knew his deepest fears more intimately than maybe anyone else in the world, and it shouldâve only increased his paranoia, but it didnât. Despite their complicated history, Tony had always felt as if there were more similarities between them than differences. Wanda was a good person despite her mistakes, and she didnât look at Tony like he was a reminder of the building that had been dropped on her, though Tony wouldnât have blamed her if she did. He wouldnât have blamed anyone for hating him, not with the blood on his hands.
Blood that he might never get the opportunity to completely atone for, now. He looked down at the table between them. âFirst question I asked too,â he mused. âA year, at most. Probably shorter given my, uh ⌠medical history.â He rapped his knuckles against the arc reactor in his chest, shielded by the thick shirt he wore. âDefinitely sounds like that. Iâve been through everything. Called every doctor in the state and outside of it, rang up Helen Cho. No doctor will touch me with a ten foot pole, and the ones who would say I-â He cut himself off, swallowing thickly. âThey say I wouldnât come out of the surgery the same.â Tonyâs power was his brain. There was nothing else that made him a hero, and if he lost that, what use was he? âPlease.â The word came out quieter than he intended, but he knew she heard it. âI know. I ⌠I havenât even told Pep yet. Weâre going to Paris this weekend.â He looked up, meeting her eyes. âNice romantic getaway, huh?â
.・.:*â âThen there might be other ways.â Not that Wanda could really know. But, he knew her. He knew other Avengers and mutants and what they were capable of. He was fukcing Tony Stark. He could find a solution.
âTony,â one hand reached forward to be placed on his. âI do not want to be that person, but, fuck, I will kick your ass if you decide to just give up like this.â This was most likely something Nat would have said. Obviously she was having some bad influence onto Wanda. âNot saying it is going to be easy. And I also will not... decide anyone for you. You will talk to Pepper. And everyone else. But donât you dare to try to deal witht that all by yourself. Do you hear me, Tony? We are over with this. We have to be.â Because, now, it seemed like they both needed their family. Though, to be fair, Tony most likely needed them the most.
âAnd, not romantic, no. But we can not have everything, right?â
