(   Laura Harrier | cis female | she/her ) — was that Dorcas Meadowes passing through diagon alley? those close to them say they remind them of  Confidence that could kill, not knowing when to shut up, ripped denim jacket and combat boots, and wearing sunglasses to hide the impact of sleepless nights, which i suppose seems to fit that Gryffindor. they’re actually pretty passionate, fearless and resilient for a twenty-three year old, but i wonder if it serves them well when working as an hit wix. rumor has it that the muggleborn  is aligning with the Order … for now. i wouldn’t have guessed… but this is a conversation we should be having somewhere else. 

part two

Dorcas led a relatively normal life up until she turned 11. There had been some weird moments when she had done  something that she couldn’t quite explain. But then it all changed when she turned 11. Apparently she was a witch.

She had been excited to go to Hogwarts. It had been sold as being really cool. Though, maybe anyone at 11 would think going somewhere where everyone had been magic would be cool. But then she got there, and whilst some things were cool, some of the other children really were not.

Dorcas learnt from early on that not everyone liked muggleborns. Initially she stayed quiet, not wanting to cause too much of a scene. But there was only so much bullying, and name calling she could take. 

She was not one to let anyone walk all over her. And she would stand up to the people that did not like her. It probably wasn’t the best idea. But she was pretty fearless, and wasn’t going to allow anyone to tell her that she, or her muggleborn friends did not deserve to be here

Deciding to become an hit wix, and then joining the Order had been easy decisions for her. She had lived experience of what it was like to live in a world where people didn’t think you were good enough. And she didn’t want to live that way any more so she would do anything to change the world.

shawna  laughs,  rolling  her  eyes  as  she  rifles  through  her  closet.  ❝  oh,  trust  me,  i’d  love  to  skip  out,  but  apparently,  showing  my  face  at  these  things  is  ‘good  for  networking’  or  whatever  bullshit  my  coach  keeps  saying.  ❞  she  tosses  a  dress  onto  the  bed  beside  dorcas  before  turning  to  lean  against  the  dresser,  arms  crossed.  ❝  besides,  if  i  don’t  go,  who  else  is  gonna  drink  all  their  expensive  liquor  just  to  spite  them  ?  ❞  her  grin  is  sharp,  but  there’s  something  almost  playful  in  the  way  she  tilts  her  head,  considering  dorcas.  ❝  what,  you  trying  to  tempt  me  into  staying  ?  you’ll  have  to  try  harder  than  that,  meadowes.  ❞ but  then  her  gaze  flickers  to  the  small,  carefully  wrapped  box  sitting  on  the  nightstand,  and  she  exhales.  inside  are  enchanted  toy  snitches  —  harmless  things  designed  to  hover  just  close  enough  for  little  hands  to  chase  after  them.  she  had  charmed  them  herself,  making  sure  they  wouldn’t  fly  too  fast,  just  enough  to  give  the  kids  a  thrill.  ❝  anyway,  i’ve  got  to  at  least  drop  this  off.  it’s  for  the  kids.  if  there's  any  reason  to  show  face,  it's  for  that.  ❞  she  shrugs  like  it’s  nothing,  like  she’s  not  secretly  proud  of  the  idea,  before  flashing  dorcas  a  grin.  ❝  unless  you  wanna  come  and  help  me  not  bore  to  death  ?  i  intend  to  snoop  and  need  a  partner  in  crime,  even  if  you're  not  dressed  to  the  occasion.  ❞  she  knows  her  persuasion  skills  won't  win  out  this  time,  but  she  could  try.

If she was honest, she had considering going. It was an open invite after all. And she wanted them to know that she wasn't scared of going anywhere. Well, most of the time anyway. But, she at the same time did not want to go somewhere where she knew that she was not wanted. Of course, she'd spent a lot of her time in the Wixen world like that. It was why she was so determined to make the work better. She didn't want any other little eleven year olds to go through what she had. "Rather you than me babe" She murmured from her position on the bed. She really did not fancy going, even if it was to show face. She could not think of something worse.

"Now. That sounds like my kind of party" She mused with a laugh. That would have been one of the reasons she would've gone. She knew the Malfoys would put out decent alcohol. Or at least, she assumed so anyway. They wouldn't want to look like fools right? But still, the idea of that alcohol wasn't enough to make her change her mind about going.

"Ha. No." Shawna might have actually been one of the only ones that would've gotten her to actually go. But a las, she was pretty set on her decision. "Go somewhere where the majority of them hate my existence? No thanks" She could not think of something worse. "But you can give me all the juicy gossip when you get home."

To be honest Dorcas really didn't know how she'd ended up at Shawn's place. But she didn't care too much. The other was pretty, and Dorcas liked pretty. And, even if she was not going to that silly event, she did like dressing up, so she felt like she was a good person to help Shawna. Although, maybe not so much today if one looked at her in her sweat pants and hoodie. Though she figured if she hadn't dressed up then Shawna couldn't try to drag her along. Dorcas could think of nothing more than going to the Malfoys.

"Do you have to go?" She giggled, lying on her front on Shawna's bed as she looked over at her. "I'm sure you'll have much more fun if you stayed here with me."

“ why are you apologizing ? ” andromeda furrowed her brows, chewing on the cake she’d made and wasn’t supposed to be that … well chewy. “ want some ?” she offered, extending a piece toward dorcas, entirely unaware of its unfortunate texture and taste ... if andromeda suffered from dorcas’ late-night hookups, then dorcas, in turn, suffered from andromeda’s dreadful baking . and her insistence that she needed to try everything she’d make. “you’re not an awful roommate.” she reassured, her tone as even as ever. comforting others was difficult when one wasn’t used to it. but andromeda would always try for the people who mattered to her. even when it meant, doing it with a straight face and offering bad cake.     “ it was simply an observation because i’d assumed those hookups would multiply. given what happened to melis. ” dorcas would always act a little off when it came to their friend. something andromeda couldn’t decipher.    “ have you visited her ?” she asked, uncharacteristically unbothered by her close proximity.there was a quiet warmth between them, and andromeda had come to cherish it. “ are you sure about that ? ” she didn’t want to press too much on this issue. if dorcas was ready to talk about it, she’d be here to listen to her. still, she couldn’t help but feel a little concerned. “ consider yourself lucky then. maybe if they do ask you to come, i’m sure we can find a way so you don’t need to go ? maybe some potion you could drink , something to give the convincing appearance of ill health.”

"Cause I know it bothers you and I still do it anyway." Dorcas supposed she technically was okay with bringing people back here. She did live here and pay her own rent. But she liked Andromeda, and she should respect that it was her space too. She wondered if it would be different if it was just one person? But there was only one person she wanted to be with long term, and well that was not going anywhere any time soon. Maybe she could tone down the hook ups though. Or at least, not bring them back to the flat.

"You sure?" She felt like one right now. She just shrugged. "Melis will survive. She's strong." And right now she was more concerned with making sure she was okay, than hooking up. Anyway, she was too exhausted for that. She knew she also looked exhausted. That wasn't a good look when one was trying to pull. "Yeah. She stayed over a couple of days ago." That had been nice. She liked being able to look after her friend.

"I dunno." She murmured with a shrug as she looked at Andromeda. "I've tried not to think about it." It was hard. She could be next. Or what if they went after her family? What she did was risky. It put those she loved at risk. But she was too far in, and she couldn't back out now. "I mean I look terrible right now. Wouldn't be too much of a push to sat I'm ill." She mused with a little laugh. "I just need some proper sleep."

“I wouldn’t dare, she is my dear cousin after all, gotta keep on good terms with the family that still speaks to me,” he smirked, wondering how the two of them had come to be roommates. “It does suck, and it is a risk, ruining the friendship or being told no and having to go on with that knowledge, look at them and feel that disappointment every time even if you are still friends… the same place you were in before…” he trailed off realizing he was babbling. He and Remus were still friends, even if they’d had a real break up he felt they could mend things but they hadn’t got that far, and it all sucked. The what if would always haunt him. “Of course, there's the other option, things work out and you get everything you want, maybe you’ll be luckier than me,” he offered. “I had a couple as well, but look at me, a couple does nothing to a body this size,” he chuckled. “So, I wasn’t drunk, I just didn’t see anything. I doubt anyone would be so obviously skulking around, they would blend right in,” he sighed. And that was the problem, they didn’t know what Voldemort looked like or all the members so it made things easy to miss. “And I’ve got yours,” he nudged her gently. “Of course, hit wix or friend I’ve got you either way.”

"How did I ever end up with two Blacks in my life" Dorcas teased with a little laugh. It was funny though. One of the biggest names known in the elitist world, and here she was, a lowly muggleborn having collected two of them. It was amusing. Dorcas sighed, a pout on her lips. "Ugh...." That was her only words. She bit her lip though, turning a to look at Sirius. Now that she wasn't as much in her internal pity party, she could sense that he was speaking from some sense of experience, rather than just offering her advice. "Sounds like you've gone through something similar....." She murmured, biting on her lip. "Wanna talk about it?" She took another sip of her coffee, and just smiled. She understood if he didn't, but she also wanted to be there for her friend.

"Just feels like nothing we do is doing any good." They always seemed to be 10 paces behind. And it sucked. "I sometimes wonder if I'd have a better life if I'd just stuck to the muggle world." Of course, she wouldn't have met her amazing friends. But then again, she wouldn't be risking her life. She'd be safe. Probably insanely bored, but safe. Dorcas smiled at his words, gently nudging him back. She was glad that the conversation was a little less serious now. "You're stuck with me Black. Whether you like it or not." But luckily, she had a feeling he did like it.

shawna  snorts,  leaning  an  elbow  against  the  bar.  ❝  that  obvious ?  ❞  she  repeats,  tilting  her  head  like  she’s  considering  it.  ❝  let’s  say  i’ve  seen  you  walk  in  here  looking  better.  ❞  her  lips  twitch,  but  there’s  no  real  bite  to  it.  she  watches  as  dorcas  takes  a  sip,  eyes  flicking  over  her  like  she’s  assessing  just  how  bad  it  really  is.  ❝  good,  ❞  she  says  when  dorcas  promises  no  therapy  tonight.  ❝  i’m  off  the  clock  for  that  shit.  ❞  but  she  still  lingers,  and  doesn’t  move  to  another  customer  just  yet.  instead,  she  rests  her  hip  against  the  bar.  ❝  so  if  not  that,  what’s  got  you  in  here,  then ?  just  my  charming  company ?  ❞

"Rude" Dorcas mused, but there was a little smile on her face indicating that she didn't mind. She knew that she looked awful. She wasn't sleeping well, and work was hard. She should've just gone home. But she couldn't resist a drink and seeing someone pretty. "Stress is not good for me." Was it good for anyone? Dorcas noted that Shawna hadn't moved on, even though there were other customers in the leaky. She had to admit that she kind of liked that. It was nice getting attention from a pretty company. "Maybe...." She shrugged, a little smile on her lips. "I like spending time with pretty ladies." Maybe that was why she spent so much time here. "Also needed a moment to be somewhere that isn't my flat or work."

"Yes!" Melis grinned, reaching out with wiggling fingers to grab the tub from her before settling back down onto the couch, crossing her legs underneath herself. "How have you been though?" She knew that this development hadn't just hit her hard, it was terrifying that it had been pulled off when all of them had been on such high alert, measures had been taken, aurors were fucking everywhere. "It still feels surreal it even happened. There were so many people there watching and being careful, sometimes I wonder if they have help, you know. Like someone even more on the inside than we realize."

Dorcas giggled, before sitting back down on the couch next to Melis. She opened up her own tub of ice cream, chocolate flavour, before eating some. "Eh. Pass." She murmured with a shrug. She didn't really want to talk about it. She felt like all she was doing was talking about it. It was all anyone was talking about at work. She knew a murder was a big deal, but there was other crime going on too. "I know....." She murmured, biting on her lip. "Even when we were all there, with intentions of watching everyone, they still get past us." Sure, maybe they'd been distracted at times. But to get past them all? It was a big deal. "Feels like we are always like two steps behind"

For the first time in a week or so, Melis could feel the tension in her shoulders start to lift, the constant visions of Francesca's body were fading to the back of her mind, not completely disappearing but lessening. It was incredible what the simply act of being around someone she loved could do, the change to her mood was immediate knowing she could talk to Dorcas about anything and she would never run away. Everyone needed that. Everyone needed love in their life, whether it was for themselves, platonic or romantic. It was the most powerful force in the world and she learned that every day at her job. "Ummmm...left!"

Dorcas sometimes wished she could go back to Hogwarts. Of course there was still the bullying then. But things did seem easier. It was easier to forget this all, and just enjoy time with her friends. Even though she was enjoying being with Melis right now, there was that niggling thought about what would happen next, or who would be the next one to get hurt. It never went away, despite how much she distracted herself. But she ploughed through, and put a smile onto her face anyway. "Left it is" She murmured with a laugh, before holding out her hand. "Mint Choc chip. Yum."

"It's not a chore!" Melis immediately countered. The last thing she ever wanted was one of her friends thinking she didn't want to hang out, that was an insane thought to even contemplate. "Never a chore but you know sometimes you're craving some protein and ice cream won't cut it even though it is delicious and we both know I won't be able to stop myself." Leaning back against the couch, she watched as Dorcas moved into the kitchen, still able to almost see her as she searched around for the tubs in question. "Hmmm strawberry or mint chip, surprise me!"

"Oh shush. I am joking" Dorcas murmured, rolling her eyes, but she still had a smile on her face. Her friends were the most important thing in her life. They were the main reason she fought as much as she did. She wanted a better world for them. "We can go out and get something if you really want." She added, still smiling. She herself could live off ice cream for now, but she supposed she could go out for Melis. "You got it." Finding the two tubs in question, she grabbed two spoons before heading back to her friend. "Left or right hand?" She'd hidden the tubs behind her back, a little grin on her face now.

"We could always run out and get some if we get desperate." Melis countered, knowing she'd need something savory soon even though the distraction of sugary ice cream was a tempting one. "A whole tub and a spoon sound insane and exactly what we need. I'm going to be up all night though, so just be prepared for that." Unless they threw in some wine too, that sugar rush would last hours, but at this point, Melis wasn't going to complain, it was a distraction. One she desperately needed.

"Hmm. I guess so." But Dorcas did not fancy moving too much. So hopefully ice cream would do for now. She laughed, as she pushed herself up to a standing position, before looking down at her friend. "You make it sound like a chore to hang out with my best friend." She pointed out, a grin on her face as she walked off towards the kitchen. It wasn't too far away. The apartment was small after all. "What flavour do you want?" She called out when she got to the freezer. "We've got vanilla, chocolate, strawberry or mint choc chip."

God, it was depressing sometimes thinking about what was happening in the world. How such evil could be rising and there were people either ignoring it completely or choosing to join them. It was mindboggling. Melis couldn't understand it, but she knew thinking about that too much would only make their efforts seem futile and they weren't. They were important. "Exactly. And speaking of numbers, I need a number of sausage rolls or something. I'm starving." That much was true, but she was also determined to raise the mood somehow. It didn't do to dwell on such sadness, not when there were things to be excited about.

Dorcas was grateful for the change in topic. Whilst sometimes talking about these kind of things were important, Dorcas did like distracting herself from it all. When they were together, messing around in her kitchen, she could sometimes forget that some of their world hated her. She could pretend they were just two friends enjoying life together. It was sometimes enough. "I think we might actually have some sausage rolls...." She mused, a little grin on her face. "What I know for sure is we have a shit ton of ice cream. A tub each and a spoon?"

“Well, what do you have around here that you don’t really like, or is easy to repair?” he smirked as he looked around the kitchen. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea… unless you’re sure she feels the same, and that if you broke up badly you could still be friends… take it from someone who knows,” he looked down at his coffee cup then. He had taken that risk and things had seemed to go well, Remus had felt that way too but then he went back on it and decided he didn’t want to risk the friendship and they should go back to just that. It hurt, the ghost of the what if they had gotten a real shot hanging there and it made him sad. “I wasn’t even drunk like Moody yelled at us for, and I was a lot of places around the party and I saw nothing,” he shook his head. They should have all picked a spot at the event and stayed there instead of moving around as spots had clearly been left open. He looked up at her question, wanting to tell her not to worry, they would be fine, but he knew it was a lie. “We just have to stick together then, better chance of making it if we aren’t alone, if someone has our back,” he finally said. That’s why they had stopped patrolling solo and were now making sure it was done in pairs.

"I suppose we could break some plates. Easy to replace. But don't break Andromeda's favourite. Don't need another reason for her to want to kill me." Dorcas wasn't the best room mate. But she did try. She sighed, biting on her lip. It was hard. Sometimes she thought that it would be easier if she did tell Melis. But then she didn't want to ruin their friendship. And maybe it made her a coward, but she wasn't ready yet to risk that. Melis meant too much to her. "That is what has stopped me telling her. I value our friendship too much to risk it.... but it fucking sucks." She didn't want to watch Melis with others. But it was how it had to be right now.

"I may have had a drink or two" She mused with a little laugh. She had been at a party after all. But she did feel guilty. She was a hit wix. She was supposed to stop this from happening. Dorcas just offered Sirius a small smile. She adored him. Even when she felt low, and like she had nothing else to offer, he made her feel better. "Always got your back Siri." She murmured a few minutes later. "Us hit wix gotta stick together."

"I know." Melis said with a smile and nod of her head. She was blessed with great friends, people she cared about, which was both a gift and a curse in a time like this. Each and every one of them was a way in to destroy her. Add her family on top of that and Melis was a pin cushion riffled with ways to get to her heart. It wasn't ideal for war time, but she wouldn't have been any other way. She loved too hard and too deeply to change now. "We have to remember that, even when it's hard. We aren't alone."

Sometimes Dorcas wished she could take herself away from this world. She sometimes found herself wondering how easier her life would be if she had stayed in the Muggle world, and was oblivious to all of this heartache. But she had not, and she knew thoughts like that weren't helpful, even if sometimes she wished they were true. Dorcas sighed, closing her eyes for a moment, not saying anything as she just enjoyed the quiet that sat between the pair. "Strength in numbers and all that right?" She eventually murmured, not opening her eyes. She was trying to convince herself really, but it wasn't helping.

rodolphus had been sleeping in his office for the past week it felt like. yesterday was the first time that he had gone home to the lestrange manor to check in on his mother, but now it was the next day and it was early and he already sees the trail of reporters and people that were ready to jump rod the moment that he stepped in. he had been doing minimal interviews just trying to peace together what the fuck happened himself. he had berated his aurors the night that everything happened, but there was just something off, and while he truly did not have any feelings towards the girl that died, he still had an act to play as head auror, on top of doing most of the interviews with every single person that was there at night at st. mungos. he puts a potion of vitality in his coffee cup as he walked in the ministry. before he can get a drink of the coffee himself he's already being acosted, he looks over at the person, his face neutral, the bags under his eyes must be clear, but he is polite and doesn't raise his voice but keeps it level. he had more interviews today, perhaps they were one of them or someone from the media. "hello good morning. how can i help you this morning?" they are still in the atrium.

Dorcas usually adored her job. When she'd qualified as a hit wix she'd been proud. Who would have guessed that the little muggleborn girl who could barely stop herself from punching her bullies would actually contain herself enough to qualify as a hit wix? it had made her smile. And, filled with self confidence as always, Dorcas thought she was pretty great at her job. But, it was times like this that made it difficult. It was also the exact reason she had been so determined to succeed at this job. But it did not make it any easier.

To be honest, she hadn't intended on talking to Rodolphus Lestrange, but then he was there, and apparently talking to her. "Umm..." She had interacted with the older man a couple of times. After all, they did both work in law enforcement. But she couldn't say that she particularly liked the guy. "You're kinda in my way." You know. Since he'd stopped, and she was wanting to actually get to the lifts.

"Good thing I turned up them." Dorcas teased, a little smirk on her lips. She did think very highly of herself. But with some of the opinions of the wixen world, if she didn't love herself, nobody would. The brunette just raised an eyebrow as she took the drink from Shawna. "Is it that obvious?" She asked as she took a sip of the drink. Hopefully it wasn't, though Dorcas knew it had been a long week, and she was feeling exhausted. She should have gone to bed rather than come to the pub. "Rude." She teased shaking her head. "But not therapy sessions tonight. I promise."
