When he saw a sunrise, he usually couldn’t blink because it was so breathtaking. It was one of his favorite things, watching the sun sink or slowly return up above. It painted the sky with pinks and oranges that were beautiful, but today all it reminded him of was how he passed the forty-eight hour mark of no sleep. If he had managed to catch ten or fifteen minute naps within the past two days, he honestly couldn’t remember. Ever since he’d been sporting bandages on his left hand, he’d been running on autopilot.

It wasn’t footsteps or a certain noise that alerted him someone was there. It was the feeling of a warm presence that had approached, energy radiating from the figure that he really didn’t want to pay attention to. “I didn’t think anyone else was up yet.” Early hours of the morning like this, he had hoped to remain alone. Chester couldn’t keep it from showing on his face–he couldn’t deal with people right now. He didn’t want to.

“Couldn’t sleep.” Dorcas wasn’t sure what had woken up her up so early. It was strange. She just sat up, wide awake, when she normally fell out of bed five minutes before classes. Even stranger, she had gotten up and gotten dressed, something in her wanted the cold morning air. It wanted to see the sunrise. It was all very weird. Something had led her here.

She scanned his face and sat next to him. He was in a mood, she could see it on his face. But that was okay, they could just sit. The universe was weird. Dorcas had noticed the bandages on his hand the other day- but hadn’t asked just yet. Again, there was a weird feeling surrounding the situation in its entirety. “D'you see this every morning?”

“Damn. I should watch my mouth around you. Never know what you’ll use as blackmail.” He was joking, partly. “Oh no, don’t remind me. Now we have to take pictures. I don’t even like taking pictures. I’m always in the middle of blinking when the flash goes off–these awkward photos will be on point then!”

Wincing a bit when feeling the comb tug, he reached up to touch the spot. “Blimey, Dorcas. Don’t rip my head off.” But he was only being dramatic. “No…” He inhaled and was silent while considering telling her. She might just pull his hair for not telling her sooner. “I know…I know all that. We’ve hung out, actually.”

“You should know better by now!” She nearly squealed in excitement as his nest sentence. Dorcas truly felt blessed having a best friend who enjoyed awkward photos as much as she. “Yes. Between you blinking and my dumb facial expressions we will make everyone feel uncomfortable. Brilliant.”

“Look, look, no pain no gain and I’m done.” She put her hands on his shoulders and spun him toward the mirror. She met his eyes in the mirror, her face fell. “Chester Wakefield. You hung out with Quidditch Hufflepuff with the nice bum? I need details.”

a smile slid across his lips. “you know the right words to my heart, love.” he tilted his head, thinking on the thought of ditching for a short moment. the idea did sound appealing, but he wasn’t about to admit that to his gryffindor friend. “what exactly is in ditching for me?”

“Getting drunk with the cutest girl in Gryffindor, obviously.” She wiggled her eyebrows and stood, gathering up belongings. “Now come on before Binns gets here and we’re stuck in lecture for two hours.”

“Of course you did.” she said with a sigh. “Good decision, I don’t think that’s the kind of thank you notes people expect for the gifts they send.” she said tilting her head as she tried to figure what will look best for her. “Down, always, always flaunt your beautiful hair, Doe.”

“Why should I care what she expects of me? She can rot in hell for all I care-,” Dorcas said as she looked over her skirt options once again. “Alright. That was harsh. My bad.” The purple would do. “Down it is, then. So.” She picked up the skirt and turned to her friend. “What are your goals for the night?”

His nose scrunched up because that nickname made him feel like a five year old. “I’d go down in a blaze for you. You’re my favorite…don’t tell Doc I said that.” He laughed a little, but smiled warmly at his friend. “Okay, just checking. If we hadn’t done this so last minute, we could’ve tried to find you a better skirt.”

Chester sat still as soon as he felt the comb through his hair. Now he definitely felt five years old, but something about it also felt nice. He was listening, but didn’t comment until one name stood out. “I remember.” He began to smile, but bit it back. “…I know, wait how do you know? Are you getting at something?” He turned to look at her then, wondering what Dorcas had been up to now.

“I will hold whatever I’d like against Doc Dearborn if he wasn’t so- Doc Dearborn-,” She rolled her eyes. Doc Dearborn was a ten although he skulked around like he was three. He’d told her he wasn’t interested years ago but- a girl can dream. “You’re right. Maybe next year- ohh noooooo Chester. This might be our last ball together. We’ve got to get loads of awkward photos for the dream flat.”

She furrowed her eyebrows and she combed out a knot. How did the boy still have a knot? Also- why was he being so defensive? “I went over and said how-do-ya-do the other day. Is that a crime? I think you should go for it. You both play quidditch, you know. And he’s a Hufflepuff. Nice by default.”

“Okay, okay-,” she sighed, taking him by the hand and pulling him to the dance floor. “Besides- I’m the only one who calls you Oz-man. And it’s loud. Nobody that matters even heard it.”

“That wouldn’t be worse, it’d just mean I’d have to take a swing at whoever looks your way.” He joked, unfazed since he saw her only as a friend. A sister, really. “Did you need help with anything?” He asked then, looking over and smiling since she was still in pajamas. He wasn’t good with fashion, but would give any advice if she needed it. “Cute Hufflepuffs?” Just the thought turned his smile bashful, which he immediately tried to supress. “Fine, have at it. It doesn’t look good any which way you comb it.”

“Chessie you’d take a swing at somebody over me?” She held her hand to her heart, “I’m honored. Truly.” Dorcas turned, scouring his bedside for the comb. She picked it up and walked over toward him. “’m good. Honestly, it’s just the skirt’s a bit itchy so I’m avoiding it right up until we leave.”

“You know- cute Hufflepuffs.” She smiled, and began to gently brush his hair with the comb. “Oz-man, Eddie Bones surely grew up. That one with the nice bum- remember? Turns out his name is Octavius and he seems like a nice young man.”

“Yeah, I didn’t want to be rude about it when you showed it to me earlier, but it was awful.” she agreed with a laugh. “I do like the purple and I think it goes well with - wait, you didn’t actually burn it, did you?” she asked narrowing her eyes a little as she looked at Doe suspiciously, she could never be too sure about her friend.

“Of course I burned it. It was ugly just like her I did consider sending the ashes to her but it was all a bit- too morbid for me?” She tilted her head to the side, reexamining the purple. “What do you think? Hair up or down with it?”

“Still not dressed?” He guessed, not looking up right away because he had expected Dorcas to return as quickly as she had last left. They were both moving slow with all this–him because he couldn’t quite understand how he was supposed to look presentable and his best friend indecisive with the wardrobe, probably more than he was at the moment. “Comb? I ran my fingers through it already, I thought it looked fine?” 

“It could be worse- I could be naked with nothing to wear.” She caught a look at herself in the mirror. The purple skirt would do better with the top, probably. She reminded herself to comb through her hair once again herself before they headed out. “Chester- while your personality is enough for me and I love you- we are trying to attract cute Hufflepuffs. Let me do it, please.”

Dorcas was gone. How was she supposed to recognize Chester, or Lily, or one of the other few people who gave two shits about her while everyone had masks on? Especially if she was- not the most sober person in the room. She scanned the room for any sort of familiarity when she bumped into another- who she would likely recognize had she not been this far gone. “Oi- hiiiii. Sorry about that.” She looked up at him, she placed her arms on his shoulders. “I’m looking for my friends. Everyone’s got masks on and I’m having the time of my life trying to find them. I’m sorry about bumping into you like that.”

“Chesterrrrrr,” Dorcas, half dressed in her outfit, still with her pajama bottoms on, entered the boy’s dorm. She’d been going back in forth for the last hour- but it had been fifteen minutes since she had last checked in. Spotting her true other half happily sitting on the struggle bus, she said, “How’s it coming- ahhhhh. Where’s your comb?”
