Next year I'm going to join beginers instrumental to play the bassoon. I've never even touched one before, and will be going from bari sax to bassoon. Tips?

Saxophone to bassoon is not that bad of a switch but just get used to a much smaller mouthpiece/reed, more complex fingering system, a tighter embochure and be prepared to work hard to get good at it. (Other tips include: finding a private teacher and buying reeds from them, the reeds are much better quality than store ones)

my opinions on the instruments since you guys are asking (reblog and add yours!!1!)

french horn: honestly so pure. i always think of Dvorak’s 9th when i hear them and u g h y e a s

tuba: my bias here should be obvious

euphonium / baritone: honestly they’re so pretty and cute and nice to listen to. basically improved versions of tubas (sorry @me)

flute: pretty but anyone who can play them is clearly dabbling in dark magic

mellophone: i haven’t met one but i really like their sound. its so nice and… not to be redundant but mellow

trumpet: tbh i could listen to trumpets all day. even beginning players sound amazing to me

trombone: i always listen to the trombones when i’m confused on my part, so they’re sort of my anchor. thanks frens

piccolo: similar to flutes but the notes are even prettier and the players are using even more dark magic

saxophone: honestly saxophones=awesome jazz to me, and i love jazz, so

clarinet: they sound like the ethereal wood fairy version of flutes (im not sure why i think this). there’s a really good clarinet player at our school so i always think of their solos when clarinets get brought up

oboe: like clarinets but more flute and less wood fairy

bassoon: oboes but stronger

percussion: thank you kind friends for keeping the beat when i am too lazy to count

piano: probably the very purest musical insturment

viola: like with french horns i always think of Dvorak and how awesome y'all’s parts are in his stuff

violin: amazing but also definitely dark magic

cello: i live to listen to cello solos. (also just Dvorak in general, but the two are intertwined)

bass: you’re the string version of me. i respect you

tl;dr I REALLY LIKE CLASSICAL MUSIC

PUBLIC PSA ANNOUNCMENT

I am neither English nor a horn, true. I have seen many confusions about this, and I blame the Americans. So here is the story behind my name:

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away from now, the “English horn” looked like this: \ /

But then the kink moved up to the instrument we ALL know and love. Originally it was called cor angleè, (my spelling might be a little off), which is French for ‘angled horn’, because of the kink in the middle (which is now at the top). And it WAS a kind of hunting HORN. But because of miscommunication, people start calling it 'cor anglais’, which we still use in Britain and France, which the rest of Europe have translated into their own languages. (Eg. in German it’s Englischehorn, or something) Anyway, because Americans can only speak English because of reasons, you translated it into “English Horn”.

And the princess married the prince and they all lived happily ever after.

#how English Horn got its name

Instruments According to a Tuba Player

Piccolo: just an octave higher and they'd be dog whistles

Flute: their lungs are equivalent to a tuba's which is impressive but they need like 12 people and it just makes everything sound airy :/

Violin: either sound way better or way worse than the flutes, the bows always seem to not be the exact same but when they are its freaking amazing

Viola: larger under appreciated violin

Oboe: could shatter an entire tuba if enough of them play out of tune together

Clarinet: a recorder going through puberty, but the actual players are usually nice

French Horn: a tiny majestic tuba with curls, must be protected at all times

English Horn: you're not a horn why are you called horn you're a stick

All Saxophones: the players are complete nerds and I love them but everyone's sick of hearing careless whisper come on stop honking your overrated goose mating machines

Bassoon: long wooden stick with too many buttons, the players are truly talented

Trumpet: their bell hole may be tiny but they can sure be loud

Cello: pretty cool instrument, most of the players are also pretty cool, don't ever bring up canon in d when there's a cello around unless you want an angry rant

Trombone: cool slidey dude, protect at all costs

Baritone/Euphonium: looks like a mini tuba but sounds like a trombone minus the cool slidey noises

Tuba: BEST INSTRUMENT EVER!!!!! deserves more solos and love but is amazing and pure and everyone who plays it is amazing you go friends

Double Bass: like a stringed wood tuba, popular and loved by everyone, the players are often really cute and nice though

Percussion: chill dudes
