I don’t want to be alarming, but things could get really bad really fast. OTW shared this today on Twitter, and I'm a bit worried about it 😅
Ao3 is a non-profit organisation. If they have to start paying taxes, I have no idea what will happen.
I'd like to remind everybody that this isn't just about A03 or civil rights organizations. This could be applied to any 501 organization. That includes churches, schools, museums and library support organizations. All sorts of support organizations like soup kitchens or places like goodwill. Those are all non-profit organizations and they all have a 501 status. This is a threat to every civil organization we have that is meant to help the public.
So please contact your representatives. Please look this up on Twitter and click the link so you can call your representatives and voice against this. Because there's a hell of a lot more at stake with a bill like this than just ao3. People's lives could be at risk.

Congress has already tried to fast-track this legislation once and failed because of the onslaught of calls to their offices. We can’t let them do this quietly. URGENT: Tell your reps to vote NO on H.R. 9495!
I have some good news and some bad news.
Bad news: the resolution passed in the House.
This means that it's heading over to the Senate, where they'll tinker with it and vote again.
If it passes the Senate, it goes to the President, who has the option to veto.
Which means NOW you reach out to your Senators (both of them) and tell them that you want them to vote NO on this Trojan horse of awful.
But: we have two more chances to keep this from becoming law. The fight's not over yet.
And that's not even the good news!
For various reasons of political fuckery/ rules lawyering, this bill had to go through TWO rounds of votes in Congress to get through.
It didn't pass the first time because it had a higher threshold of votes to meet (2/3 Congress Critters had to vote yes) and it failed because it couldn't clear that bar.
So the people behind the bill sent it through AGAIN in a way that needed fewer votes to pass (only 1/2 of Congress Critters had to vote yes). This time it got through.
But along the way, almost 40 people changed their vote to "No". ALL BECAUSE OF YOUR OUTREACH.
That's huge.

Labor Unions are nonprofit
Many universities are nonprofit
Many independent news outlets and journalist organizations are nonprofit
Museums, libraries, art programs, zoological societies are nonprofit
Some worker’s comp organizations are nonprofit
Food banks, aid organizations, etc are nonprofit
Will they be bold enough to target some of these right out the gate? Probably not, but I am extremely worried about what this means for worker and student led protests, libraries that won’t comply with censorship, aid organizations that serve queer folk, and especially, especially mosques.
It is unlikely to go through the senate this year. But the GOP controls the senate and house soon. You absolutely need to care about this.

if you're unsure, the easiest way to check/update Firefox is
open the application menu (three horizontal lines in the upper right corner)
click Help > About Firefox
in the pop-up window, look for the version number under the header. If it's 131.0.2, you're in the clear. If not, there should be an option that says "restart to update Firefox." Click that.

I said I wasn't active in the gimmickverse (or on [tumblr] in general) because I lost interest, and while that is true, that wasn't the only reason.
The second reason (which I decided not to talk about until now, maybe because I thought it would seem like I'm trying to get sympathy or pity or something, which I am not, I'm just explaining why I was and probably will be inactive) was that I feel like I did many things very wrong, and people I like dislike me now (even though I know there's nothing I could have done that was THAT wrong, especially since I haven't been blocked by anyone I follow/wanted to follow), and felt like I should become inactive because of it.
I've actually already stopped talking to a few groups of people because of this (my IRL friends back when I still had any, Discord servers, etc.), and, so far, I haven't talked to any of the people I stopped talking to because of this (just found more people online if I wanted to talk), and when I made my previous post, I was hoping this could be the first time I did come back, and this feeling could stop, but so far it hasn't, and I'm not sure it will.
So I might never return to being active on [tumblr], I might return in a few days, I might return in a few years (when I'm not a teenager anymore), and if I return, I might do it on a different account and hide everything I did on this one, or I might do something else.
