The good news is that Washington DC, Saint Croix, Saint Thomas and Puerto Rico have all been given statehood to make up for the states we lost, the bad news is that we have lost California’s $4.251 trillion GDP.

Salt Lake City, 2024 - I do not remember the particulars, protest was every week. Someone would inevitably burst into your club or cafe or bookstore and exclaim:

“we’re headed to the capitol!”

And of course we would go. Hitching rides, snatching flags and signs.

A group of us entered the building, chants bouncing off the white marble, multiplying our voices.

I remember them slamming the doors, us fanning the steps: shouting, chanting, pleading.

Reporters on the top floor snapping opportune pictures.

Like a hole in the gut, settling somber silence.

Someone next to me hesitantly asked,

“Want to have a catwalk?”

Watching a community rally is always a powerful thing. In moments turning from our own deathless despair to swarm inwards, to embrace our siblings.

I’m sure you can hear the slightly hysterical cheers, love and heartbreak. Tending to our own, silencing the outside world in a single breath.
